Health & Safety Specialist ?’ Requisition no: 527533 Position Summary The Health and Safety Specialist, reporting to the Executive Director and/or Sr. Health & Safety Specialist, is responsible for coordination/timely delivery of safety-related services and consultation to the University community across Morningside, Medical Center, Manhattanville, Lamont, Nevis and University affiliates. The Health and Safety Specialist will develop collaborative relationships with laboratory, facilities, administrative staff, and work with EH&S to ensure the effective and implementation of safety programs addressing various hazards. The Health & Safety Specialist will assist the Occupational Safety team proactively developing, implementing program goals and take initiative in leading efforts to achieve such goals through continual program maintenance. Responsibilities ?’ Collaborate with colleagues in Occupational and Environmental Safety Programs, as well as Research Safety, Hazardous Materials, Biological Safety and Environmental Safety teams, to identify potential hazards, assist in the development, implementation and monitoring of University health and safety programs. ?’ Work with EH&S leaders and colleagues in collaborating with academic (Schools), Facilities Management, Public Safety, and Human Resources across University campuses to develop, implement, monitor safety and industrial hygiene programs and respond to issues in a timely fashion. Responsibilities include coordinating/participating in group meetings, safety surveys, report writing/developing recommendations for the Academic Machine Shop Safety Program (e.g., coordinating/conducting shop surveys, organizing Shop Manager meetings and periodic review of policies, and performing training as needed). Accident Reporting and Investigation Program and Hearing Conservation Program among many other programs. ?’ Manage University-wide maintenance of the chemical fume hood program, performing certifications, performance tests in accordance with the established schedule, as well as upon request, following maintenance or repair, and enter certification data into database. ?’ Coordinate EH&S??s occupational medical surveillance program (e.g., coordinate medical evaluation appointments with Workforce Health & Safety; maintain documentation for medical surveillance program and respiratory protection program). ?’ Manage annual respirator fit testing for EH&S staff, coordinate respirator fit testing for Columbia personnel, including annual fit-testing for School of Nursing and College of Physicians & Surgeons. ?’ Assist in development/implementation of chemical exposure assessment strategy in accordance with OSHA Toxic/Hazardous Substances standards and other Occupational Exposure Limits, and research new technologies to understand hazard potential. Perform chemical/non-chemical (e.g., noise, light, heat, electromagnetic fields) hazard assessments of laboratory/non-laboratory activities under guidance of EH&S Exposure Assessment Strategy, using industrial hygiene equipment. Analyze/interpret monitoring/sampling results and make written and verbal recommendations for exposure minimization (i.e., product substitution, engineering controls, administrative controls, and personal protective equipment). ?’ Perform field activities related to Occupational and Environmental Safety Program conducting indoor environmental quality (IEQ) assessments (e.g., odor, mold, chemical, etc) typically in response to immediate concerns, and performing monitoring/sampling of appropriate media (air, water, etc.), as indicated, and assist EH&S colleagues and Facilities Management to successfully resolve IAQ and odor complaints in a timely manner and proactively communicate status, resolution, including detailed reports, to all affected parties. ?’ Assist with occupational hazard assessment program for Institute of Comparative Medicine (ICM) and NYSPI-Department of Comparative Medicine (DCM). ?’ Work with Occupational Safety Team to manage inventory, maintain EH&S??s industrial hygiene equipment, ensuring the annual maintenance schedule is current and EH&S and Facilities staff are trained in the proper use of equipment. ?’ Perform ergonomics program trainings/assessments, as scheduled or requested. ?’ Oversee Occupational Safety Team??s training program and collaborate with EH&S??s Training Coordinator for development/implementation of program components, delivery of various topics, such as: Right-to-Know/Hazard Communication, and/or specific chemical hazards, such as nitrous oxide, formaldehyde and other OSHA regulated substances. ?’ Participate in the EH&S Policy Workgroup, Facilities Safety Workgroups, including Fall Protection, Aerial Lifts, Confined Space, Lock Out/Tag Out, Hearing Conservation, and Respiratory Protection, and provide safety guidance to Facilities. ?’ Contribute to EH&S Incident Response Workgroup and participate in subsidiary workgroups. ?’ Participate in incident responses in the field during and after work hours. Provide technical safety guidance for EH&S during incident responses, during work hours and after hours. ?’ Participate in reviews of reported workplace incidents and accident investigations. ?’ Participate in the Occupational Safety Team??s rotation for approval of Rascal Appendix E - Hazardous Chemicals or Toxins used in research. ?’ Participate in the Occupational Safety Team??s review of accident reports, distributing to subject matter experts for follow-up, as needed. ?’ Maintain records/files (electronic and hard copy) and create reports on program performance metrics. ?’ Other duties as assigned. Must have the ability to work both independently and collaboratively, as a member of a team; Ability to facilitate effective operational integration, collaboration and teamwork within EH&S and Columbia University; Ability to prioritize and effectively manage multiple tasks simultaneously and exercise good judgment in managing time; Ability to establish and maintain professional, collaborative, service-oriented, cooperative and effective working relationships with students, faculty, staff, unions, customers, the public, and co-workers through effective and positive communication; Ability to use industrial hygiene/environmental equipment and information technologies, including advanced database, spreadsheet, presentation design software and word processing editing features; Ability to understand, interpret and convey measurements, data, standards and hazardous materials information; Ability to stand, walk, and negotiate occasional awkward work locations and paths of travel; Ab! Minimum Qualifications
Bachelor??s degree required (scientific discipline such as Chemistry, Biology, or Environmental Sciences preferred). Two or more years of relevant experience in the environmental health and safety field is required, preferably in a laboratory environment. An appropriate combination of education and experience, meeting Columbia University criteria, may be considered in lieu of two or more years of experience. Working knowledge of applicable city, state and federal regulations and industry standards a plus.
