Good question. The ACS document Identifying and Evaluating Hazards in Research Laboratories and the web version at
https://www.acs.org/hazardassessment
distinguishes between SOPs and Job Hazard Analyses. In my mind, a JHA is likely to be more focused on safety aspects of procedure, while an SOP is likely to include instrumentation considerations, quality assurance issues, and other data quality concerns as well as safety aspects of the work. I recognize that the terms are pretty fuzzy, particularly when lab workers and the legal community are talking to each other...
