Fire crews have been tackling a large fire at a chemical store since the early hours of this morning in Leeds.

The fire at Tradpak, a packaging and recycling firm in the Armley area, is believed to have started at 1.50am and more than 80 firefighters have fought throughout the night to bring the blaze under control.

Witnesses reported hearing loud bangs and seeing flames reaching into the sky as residents were warned to keep their windows and doors closed.

The Red Hill Road Tip was forced to close for almost 24 hours on Tuesday after a load of hazardous farm chemicals and broken asbestos was illegally dumped at the site.

The council was alerted to the situation when the tip plant operator and environmental health officer were working down at the tip face on Tuesday morning, and they detected a strong chemical smell, which increased every time the wind changed.

They also began to feel nauseous.

Council?s planning, environment and strategic services director Craig Filmer said council had to undertake their pollution incident protocol, which involved closing the tip at 9.50am that morning and notifying Triple 0 and also the Enviromental Protection Agency (EPA).

LAKE CHARLES, La. -- More than 200 Mossville and Brentwood residents with property close to the Sasol chemical company's Westlake facility have agreed to sell their property to the company as part of a voluntary relocation plan.

Sasol announced the Voluntary Property Purchase program last year, months after announcing plans for a new ethane cracker and gas-to-liquids complex at the Westlake site.

Sasol has extended 299 purchase offers ? 210 of which have been accepted, Sasol spokesman Mike Hayes told The American Press (http://bit.ly/1eIiUFY">http://bit.ly/1eIiUFY). Hayes said 84 offers are pending and two property owners, who own five properties in the area, rejected Sasol's offer.

Sasol's purchase area includes 926 parcels spread across more than 600 acres. At least 64 homeowners are expected to remain as construction begins on the new project.

"We're working through the process," Hayes said. "We have to get the appraisals done, and when they are done we have to make an offer. Then the owners have a period of time to decide. Most people are using that period of time to look and see what's available and see what they can afford. But we're getting a lot of acceptances, and we're doing a lot of closings."

AURORA, Colo. ? Smoky Hill High School in Aurora was evacuated Friday afternoon because of an isolated hazardous materials situation, the Aurora Police Department said on Twitter.
Aurora Police spokesperson Chris Amsler later said students saw someone with a backpack containing a ?suspicious powder? near the high school around 10:45 a.m. Around 1 p.m.
Officers detained a 14-year-old male student and they were talking to his parents late Friday afternoon.
The substance was determined to be corn starch and harmless.
?Detectives and fire investigators discovered that the suspect was trying to ?blow a fireball? which is the act of blowing corn starch into an open flame to cause it to flare up,? a statement from Aurora Police said Friday night.

Tube With Silver Looking Metal Causes Middle School Evacuation

Washoe County School Police says an unlabeled tube that contained the metal gallium caused authorities to briefly evacuate Billinghurst Middle School Friday morning.

School police tell us that since the metal appears silver in color, authorities thought the tube may have been filled with mercury, so they evacuated the school as a precaution. A HAZMAT team was called in to investigate and once it was determined to be safe, students returned to class.

School police say the enclosed tube was brought to a science class.
