Kevin is mostly correct! Except, I'm not a fire chief; just a former captain-now-safety officer.

Our book might work but is not perfectly aligned with the topics in the course; Ruth mentioned in a subsequent email that she uses LSCS in another course. And: our book is really written for undergraduate science students. A hazardous materials course will probably have a different audience.

Another option: I taught a general education chemistry course some years ago titled, "The chemistry of emergency response". I used this text: http://www.amazon.com/Chemistry-Hazardous-Materials-6th-Edition/dp/013314688X/ref=dp_ob_title_bk
This might align with the intended topics for Ruth's course. It was great for me, and served well as a "back door" introduction to a wide range of chemistry topics. I covered about 80% of the content of my two-semester general chemistry sequence (although not at the same depth, of course).

I think David is lurking on this one. Probably doesn't want to blow his own horn. He and I are both CHO's and chemistry faculty. I was going to teach an outreach course and his book fit the bill. I think it covers all the topics you asked about. If you send David an email with questions he is very helpful. He is (was) also the fire chief for his community.

David, correct me if I'm wrong on any of this.

CHEM 4310 Handling Hazardous Materials: "A study of the principles and methods of handling hazardous materials in the workplace. Coverage includes the nature and scope of hazards in the workplace and an overview of regulations of hazardous materials and worker safety, occupational diseases, fundamentals of industrial hygiene, basic concepts of toxicology, and an introduction to risk assessment. Prerequisite: Approval of department chairperson."
