A gas leak on Johnston Street is under control after construction crews struck a gas line.

The Lafayette Fire Department says that a Hazmat Response Team was called out to the 5700 Johnston Street around 3:30 PM to a gas leak.

According to LFD, A construction company digging behind the Ollie's Bargain Outlet and Party City strip mall hit a 2" gas line. Hazmat secured the area until service technicians from Centerpoint Gas arrived on scene to repair the line.

In the process of repairing the line, the electrical services were disconnected by LUS to the strip mall to prevent ignition of the gas. Crews anticipate the work to be completed around 6:30 pm.

Earlier, firefighters handled a hazardous materials call shortly before 11 a.m. near the Todd Road Jail outside Santa Paula, which brought a large response to the county facility.

A box truck making a delivery to the jail was leaking an unknown substance. Preliminary results indicated it could be a cleaning agent or peracetic acid. The truck driver was treated for possible exposure and released at the scene. No other injuries or damage were reported. At least two gallons leaked before the spill was contained, Welsbie said.

Ten people were injured after an explosion at a Kentucky facility that produces ingredients for Dippin' Dots, according to officials.

The scary incident unfolded on Wednesday at the ice cream facility in Paducah, NBC affiliate WPSD reported.

Paducah Police Department spokeswoman Robin Newberry told the outlet that a truck was unloading liquid nitrogen when the explosion happened.

According to Newberry, the facility is not where Dippin' Dots makes their ice cream, but where ingredients for a third-party company are produced.

At this time, the cause for the explosion remains unknown.

One teenager is in the hospital and another is facing criminal charges after a car slammed into a large silo on an orchard outside Exeter late Tuesday.

Around 11 p.m., a Chrysler sedan was eastbound on Avenue 300 near State Route 245 when the car veered off the road and struck five young citrus trees and a silo containing 1,600 gallons of diesel, California Highway Patrol Sgt. Ryan Pedersen said.

The silo ruptured and contaminated the soil with fuel. An excavator was called to remove the dirt as Tulare County Fire Department crews cleared the hazard materials.

EAU CLAIRE, Wis. (WEAU) - The Eau Claire Fire Department stopped using a traditional with a known chemical in it in 2019.

Thursday, firefighters showed off what they now use instead to put out certain types of fires.

They demonstrated an extinguishing agent known as F-500 at Chippewa Valley Technical College.

Though the material puts out many types of fires effectively, unlike traditional foam, it doesn‰??t have harmful man-made chemicals known as PFAS.

Eau Claire Fire and Rescue Deputy Chief Allyn Bertrang said all of his department‰??s in-service trucks carry F-500.

He also said firefighters don‰??t use it very often. Most fires only require water to be extinguished. Some blazes, however, including ones with flammables like gasoline and diesel fuel, as well as those with metals, need a more powerful compound.

A Central Coast water board on Friday expanded an investigation at the Santa Maria Public Airport to determine how significantly firefighting chemicals have contaminated the soil, and whether groundwater has been impacted.

The Central Coast Water Quality Control Board is requiring a supplemental site investigation into how deep per- or polyfluoroalkys, also known perfluorinated alkylated substances (PFAS), chemicals have penetrated the soil, according to a July 16 letter sent to Chris Hastert, general manager of the Santa Maria Public Airport District.

Matthew T. Keeling, the board's executive officer, said in the letter that the information is necessary to determine what clean-up actions will be needed. Hastert and board officials did not respond to emails and calls seeking comment.

The UK government‰??s Marine Accident Investigation Branch (MAIB) has released its final report on the explosion on a Cayman Islands-registered ship in South Korea on 28 Sept. 2019.

The massive explosion of the chemical tanker Stolt Groenland in the cargo port of Ulsan was caused by the rupture of a cargo tank containing styrene monomer ‰?? a colourless, oily liquid that is a precursor to polystyrene.

The inquiry found that nearby heated cargo tanks caused the dangerous warming of the temperature-sensitive substance.

Styrene is widely used in the chemical industry, but is thermally unstable.

The explosion and subsequent fire injured two crew and 15 emergency responders.

The tank rupture resulted from runaway polymerisation, a chemical reaction of styrene molecules. It released a large quantity of vapour into the atmosphere that ignited and formed a burning mushroom cloud over the road bridge to Ulsan.

PFAS TARGETED IN LEGISLATION PASSED BY US HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES

Tags: public, discovery, environmental, other_chemical

Sweeping legislation to control per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFAS) pollution in land, water, and air passed the US House of Representatives July 21.
If approved by the Senate and signed by the president, the measure could cost the fluorochemical industry millions to clean up contaminated sites and restrict releases of PFAS pollution from factories. Chemical manufacturers would also have to sponsor toxicity studies in order to keep their PFAS on the US market. In addition, the bill would forbid introducing new PFAS into US commerce for 5 years.

PFAS, a group of more than 9,000 synthetic compounds, are sturdy molecules that withstand harsh conditions and strongly resist degradation in the environment, earning them the nickname ‰??forever chemicals.‰?? Only a small number of these substances have been studied for toxicity, and some are linked to human health problems including birth defects and endocrine disruption. Congressional lawmakers are increasingly concerned about the substances as researchers discover more areas tainted with PFAS, notably in drinking water supplies.
‰??This is a bipartisan issue and an issue that impacts communities in literally every state,‰?? Rep. Chris Pappas (D-NH), a supporter of the bill, says in a statement. ‰??Far too many Americans are drinking contaminated water.‰??

The Indian multinational pesticide company United Phosphorus Limited has belatedly advised people to double down on health and safety precautions in the wake of the arson attack and massive fire at a chemicals warehouse at Cornubia, north of Durban.

Instead of wearing a normal face mask and spectacles to cover their noses and eyes, United Phosphorus Limited (UPL) has advised neighbouring residents exposed to toxic fumes from the still smouldering pesticide warehouse to consider wearing two damp surgical masks over their mouths and noses.

Arsonists and looters set fire to the massive warehouse amid recent unrest in parts of KwaZulu-Natal.

Very young children and people with asthma should also ‰??avoid being in the immediate surroundings‰?? of the warehouse, while residents with any health concerns were advised to seek medical advice.
