The Indian multinational pesticide company United Phosphorus Limited has belatedly advised people to double down on health and safety precautions in the wake of the arson attack and massive fire at a chemicals warehouse at Cornubia, north of Durban.

Instead of wearing a normal face mask and spectacles to cover their noses and eyes, United Phosphorus Limited (UPL) has advised neighbouring residents exposed to toxic fumes from the still smouldering pesticide warehouse to consider wearing two damp surgical masks over their mouths and noses.

Arsonists and looters set fire to the massive warehouse amid recent unrest in parts of KwaZulu-Natal.

Very young children and people with asthma should also ‰??avoid being in the immediate surroundings‰?? of the warehouse, while residents with any health concerns were advised to seek medical advice.

WINDSOR ‰?? Surrounded by environmentalists at the riverfront, Gov. Ned Lamont held a bill-signing ceremony Tuesday for a new law banning hazardous chemicals that are used in firefighting foam and food packaging.

The chemical ban applies to polyfluoroalkyl substances, known as PFAS, that are used in common products.

ROSS TOWNSHIP, Pa. ‰?? The smell of chlorine at North Hills High School led to a hazmat situation and one person being taken to a hospital Monday morning, officials said.

A maintenance worker noticed the smell about 6:30 a.m. after walking into the pool area, a spokesperson for the North Hills School District said.

Crews were called to the high school to ventilate the area, the spokesperson said. They also walked through the building with a meter to test chlorine levels.

HOUSTON, July 19, 2021 /PRNewswire/ -- The mother of three children injured in Saturday's chemical spill at a Houston-area water park has filed a lawsuit against the park's operators. The lawsuit claims that a concentrated and highly corrosive mixture of hypochlorite and sulfuric acid was released into a children's pool area at Hurricane Harbor Splashtown, located in the Houston suburb of Spring.

Amanda Regulus of Houston says in the lawsuit that her three daughters, all under the age of 13, immediately felt the presence of toxic chemicals in the air. Shortly thereafter, they began developing headaches, skin irritations, and sore throats. Despite the dangerous conditions, the family was not immediately evacuated by the park. Ms. Regulus says park employees asked her and other guests to join a promotional contest before exiting.

While the City of Porterville's stepped up enforcement of illegal fireworks didn't actually lead to much of a difference as far as citations when it came to the actual Independence Day holiday on July 4, it did make a major difference in the month leading up to July 4.

That's the essence of a report that will be presented to the Porterville City Council at its meeting on Tuesday. The open session of the meeting will begin at 6:30 p.m.

The City Council adopted an ordinance enforcing stricter regulations when it came to the use of illegal fireworks, including increasing fines for violations.

The end result and biggest difference came in the amount of fines issued, which almost tripled over the previous year. There were $117,500 in fines issued as compared to $45,000 in 2020, $22,500 in 2019, $40,500 in 2018, $25,500 in 2017 and $18,000 in 2016.

Almost 1,350 pounds of illegal fireworks were confiscated from June 4 through July 4. The bulk of the fireworks confiscated came before July 4 in which more than 1,200 pounds was confiscated.

Prior to July 4 the report to be presented at the council meeting states ‰??these efforts resulted in multiple felony and misdemeanor arrests.‰?? The report added 12 administrative citations were issued as a result of those efforts.

MARSEILLES ‰?? A battery fire that occurred Monday in Marseilles is contained and authorities say there‰??s no immediate danger to the public. The Marseilles Fire Department was called before the afternoon for a battery fire located west of the LaSalle Generating Station. The LaSalle County Emergency Management Agency says the scene will remain active but are reassuring that there is no threat and the fire is a different kind of fire than what occurred in Morris. As precautionary measures, officials say the Illinois Environment Protection Agency is conducting air sampling.

WORLD‰??S FIRST BAN ON PRODUCTS WITH PFAS ADOPTED IN MAINE

The US state of Maine is the first government in the world to ban the sale of products containing any chemical in a class of highly persistent synthetic compounds.
As of Jan. 1, 2030, Maine‰??s law prohibits selling any product containing per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFAS) that were intentionally added to the item. The statute, enacted July 15, contains an exception for PFAS-containing products that the state‰??s Department of Environmental Protection determines are ‰??essential for health, safety or the functioning of society and for which alternatives are not reasonably available.‰??
Rugged molecules featuring strong carbon-fluorine bonds, PFAS are sometime called forever chemicals. Some PFAS are toxic and are linked to serious health problems, but scientists have so far studied the hazards of only a handful of the 9,000 or so varieties of these compounds. The European Union last year took a pioneering step in PFAS control by adopting a strategy to phase out all but essential uses of the substances. But the EU has not yet turned its strategy into final legislation like Maine‰??s law.
The Maine statute initially bans the sale of new carpets or fabric treatments that contain intentionally added PFAS as of Jan. 1, 2023. Also on that date, manufacturers of any product for sale in Maine containing intentionally added PFAS must notify the state and describe the purpose and amount of PFAS in the product. The law authorizes the state‰??s Department of Environmental Protection to require companies to pay for collecting and processing these submissions.

Suffolk Fire & Rescue and Suffolk Police were on the scene of the hazmat incident in the 900 block of southbound Carolina Road. The truck was hauling liquid animal proteins and partially lost its load over several hundred feet of roadway, according to a city press release. It was reported at 11:52 a.m.

Suffolk Police provided traffic control in the area, and crews from Public Works set up detours at Carolina Road southbound to the Southwest Bypass and northbound at Turlington Road.

The Virginia Department of Emergency Management was also notified.

The investigation into the cause of the incident remains ongoing at this time.

A pest control company‰??s worker ended up in an induced coma after he was poisoned in a factory housing chemicals that can be used to make the pesticide 1080.

The man was hospitalised for more than two weeks in May 2019 after being exposed to a poisonous substance at a unit in Bromley, Christchurch, leased by Pest Control Research.

According to court documents, released to Stuff on Monday, the company pleaded guilty to four of the six charges originally laid by WorkSafe. The other two charges were withdrawn.

The company admitted it failed to ensure a site plan was available for inspection at a location where hazardous substances, including 91 kilograms of ethanol and 400 litres of ethyl fluoroacetate, were kept.

Swimming was finally banned on beaches north of Durban and residents warned to stay indoors at the weekend to avoid breathing noxious chemical fumes after the massive fire at a Durban pesticide warehouse ‰?? but seven days after the arson attack, questions remain unanswered about the human health risks, ecological impacts and poor communication to affected communities.

Thousands of Durban residents woke to the overpowering stench of burning chemicals almost a week ago, when arsonists and looters set fire to a massive warehouse containing toxic pesticides and chemical products owned by the Mumbai-based chemicals giant UPL.

The Indian multinational group was set up in 1969 as United Phosphorus Limited by chemist Rajju Shroff and now boasts that it is the fifth biggest agrochemical company in the world (after Bayer, Dupont, Syngenta and BASF) with annual revenue of $5.04-billion

In a press statement released almost five days after the fire began, the company confirmed that the attack led to ‰??a large plume of smoke being released into the atmosphere as well as causing water to overrun catchment devices‰?? from its new Cornubia warehouse.
