Thanks to everyone who contributed thoughts and ideas to the discussion of this week's verdict in the New York City lab fire case. With my ACS Committee on Chemical Safety chair hat on, I'd like to remind the list members that the ACS chemical safety education summit this year addressed some of the issues discussed here, particularly ways to educate decision-making stakeholders (who I think of as non-chemists who supervise chemists). This group include school administrators who may not understand the support resources required to provide students exposure to a sound and prudent chemistry education.
Some ideas for addressing this audience are included in the report of this summit, as is a list of resources for understanding best practices in safe chemistry education. This list is available at
http://dchas.org/2019/03/11/education-resources/
Of particular interest among these resources are:
1. A new series of lab safety videos for the high school audience on Youtube, starting with one describing a Safety Mindset at
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Rf-k4g0wuCs
2. The Periodic Table of Chemical Safety, available at
http://dchas.org/2019/03/13/periodic-table-of-ehs-elements/
3. The ACS Division of Chemical Education Safety Committee's Safety Guidelines for Chemical Demonstrations at
http://divched.org/committee/safety-committee
The summit participants discussed the need for a variety of different types of resources for different audiences and settings. These examples demonstrate how we are pursuing this strategy. If you have ideas for other classroom resources that the ACS could develop, please let us know.
Thanks again to everyone for their interest in Chemical Health and Safety!
