KCFD RESPONDING TO CHEMICAL FIRE IN NORTH BAKERSFIELD

The Kern County Fire Department, HazMat crews and Kern County Environmental Health are responding to a chemical fire in the 2300 block of Pegasus Drive at the NuSil facility.
The fire broke out around 5:30 a.m at the facility.
According to KCFD, the fire was ignited after an employee was transferring a hydride from one container to a 55 gallon barrel. The fire was contained to the barrel.
As a precaution, the employee, as well as another employee who was nearby at the time, were taken to a local hospital for evaluation.
Approximately twenty employees were inside the building when the fire broke out but all were able to evacuate safely.
Kern County Fire explained that all water used during the incident was isolated on site where crews can test and dispose of the water without any chance of harming the storm water system.

MAYVILLE ‰?? Four people, including three children, were airlifted to the hospital after suffering burns in a boating accident Wednesday.
The incident near the Chautauqua Marina on West Lake Road in Mayville occurred around 5:20 p.m.
Chautauqua County Sheriff Jim Quattrone said it appear the boat had just been fueled and was about 100 feet from the dock when there was ‰??an explosion of some type.‰??
A man and three children suffered serious injuries in the accident, Quattrone told The Post-Journal. The three children, whose ages weren‰??t immediately known, were airlifted to Oishei Children‰??s Hospital in Buffalo.

LA CROSSE, Wisc. (WKBT) - The La Crosse Fire Department responded on Wednesday night to reports of an unidentified chemical release at a business.
The call came in shortly after 6 pm at Great Lakes Cheese in the La Crosse Industrial Park on the North side. When crews got there, employees were evacuating the building.
Fire investigators say a chemical release happened after two incompatible chemicals were mixed.
One employee was originally missing but was later found inside the building with no injuries. Two people said they felt symptoms from the chemical release, but did not need to be taken to the hospital.

MILLINGTON, Tenn. - Multiple agencies were dispatched to a business fire in Millington.
The call came in and Shelby County fire, Millington fire, and hazmat crews made the scene.
It happened on the 5400 block of Victory Lane at Tradebe Millington.
The company processes waste and disposes of it from places across the United States, the public information officer for the Shelby County Fire Department said.
When crews arrived, they found out a barrel had flashed. Employees were able to put it out with a dry chemical.
Three people were taken to the hospital.
One person had burns, another had chest pains, and the third was having difficulty breathing.

COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. (KKTV) - A hazmat incident closed southbound I-25 in Colorado Springs on Wednesday.
Two lanes of southbound I-25 were back open at 9 p.m. following hours of traffic. The right lane was still closed for cleanup operations.
The closure was announced just before 3:30 p.m. between Northgate Boulevard and Interquest Parkway. The Colorado Department of Transportation only stated it was a hazmat spill and did not provide any other details.
The hazardous material was ammonium nitrate leaking from a semi tanker. The chemical is commonly used in fertilizer.
CDOT sent out a warning asking motorists to stay out of the shoulder, but video sent to 11 News showed a number of drivers causing more issues using the shoulder during the closure.

ST. ALBANS, Vt. (WCAX) A chemical spill at the St. Albans Co-op sent one man to the hospital.
Fire officials say Tuesday afternoon, 150 gallons of an acid-based chemical spilled while it was being off-loaded from a truck into a bulk tank.
The co-op ventilated the area immediately.
Firefighters say the spill was contained and hazmat didn't need to respond.

GREENBUSH, Ks - Usually kids are warned not to play with fireworks but exactly the opposite is happening at the Greenbush Education Center. Middle school kids are even making their own fireworks at the Explosive Chemistry Academy.
"It‰??s four teaspoons of powdered sugar, one teaspoon of baking soda," Kenzie Heatherly goes through what sounds like a cake recipe but add a sprits of alcohol and a lighter and the faces of kids like Isabella Walsh light up with excitement. They‰??re create their own exploding snakes.
Isabella said, ‰??It‰??skind of cool. We use it for baking and you can think of it, you're eating something that could explode. It‰??s kind of cool.‰??
Joey Flessner exclaimed, ‰??I love this camp! It‰??s really fun.‰??
They dissect snappers or poppers by unwrapping or cutting them open.
And they disassembled cracklers to find "pieces of silver fulmates," explained Heatherly.

WINDSOR ‰?? State health officials sought to reassure area residents and environmental activists Tuesday that there is ‰??not a likely significant health risk‰?? from the June 8 spill into the Farmington River of potentially hazardous chemical fire fighting foam.
More than 150 people turned out for the meeting at Windsor Town Hall Tuesday evening to hear about current and future state testing of the Farmington River‰??s waters, fish and sediments and what state experts are doing to clean up the spill of PFAS foam and prevent future contamination from these chemicals.
Shannon Pociu, a state environmental analyst, said the most recent testing of river waters showed that levels of the firefighting chemical compounds are rapidly dropping in the river. Brian Toal, supervisor of environmental and occupational health with the state Department of Health, said swimming or boating in the river poses little risk because PFAS isn‰??t easily absorbed through the skin.

CLEVELAND-- A Cleveland man suffered severe second and third-degree burns after a battery for his vaping device exploded.
Nader Harb had the extra battery in his pants pocket at the time, according to a lawsuit filed in Cuyahoga County Common Pleas Court recently.
He was just starting his day at work as a butcher and setting up his equipment when the LGHG2 model battery suddenly exploded.
‰??There was a flash and he was on fire,‰?? said attorney Tom Merriman, who is representing Harb, ‰??He literally drops to the ground, rolls, puts out the fire and realizes this vape battery has exploded.‰??
The gruesome injury was about the size of a volleyball and required extensive treatment by burn specialists at MetroHealth Medical Center.
‰??This particular battery was produced by LG Chemical, which is a subsidiary of LG the appliance company, the South Korean company so this is a major company,‰?? Merriman said. ‰??And this is not the first time LG Chem has faced issues with their vape battery.‰??
