Saskatoon fire crews, a hazmat team and a decontamination unit responded to a hazardous materials call Tuesday morning at Parkridge Centre, a long-term care home located in the city‰??s west end.

Crews discovered chlorine gas, a toxic and corrosive material, shortly after they arrived around 10 a.m.

In a media release, Saskatoon fire said it was caused by an error while mixing chlorine powder with water.

Two Parkridge employees were treated at the scene but declined to be taken to hospital.

City officials said parts of two busy streets ‰?? Lawrenceville Highway and Pleasant Hill Road ‰?? have been shut down where the two roads intersect because of a gas leak in the area. The city warned that it could be hours before the roads reopen and drivers are being urged to use alternate routes.

Pleasant Hill Road is closed from Burns Road to the entrance of the Walmart Supercenter on Lester Road. Lawrenceville Highway is closed from the Walmart entrance to Valley Road near the Brunswick Zone Lilburn Lanes bowling alley.

Gwinnett County Fire Department officials said a gas line at the intersection was hit during drilling work at the intersection and Atlanta Gas Light was called in for assistance.

OXFORD, MS (WMC) - Investigators are trying to determine what caused an explosion at a chemical and ammunition plant in Oxford Tuesday.
The Lafayette County Sheriff‰??s Office confirms the explosion happened at about 1:30 p.m. at the Olin Winchester plant on County Road 101. Officials say it was an internal explosion that resulted in smoke filling the building, and Hazmat was not called to the scene.
The sheriff‰??s department also confirmed that neighbors and drivers in the area are not affected.
The Missouri-based company makes rifle and pistol ammunition as well as military ammunition packaging. A company spokesperson released a statement Tuesday afternoon, saying seven employees are being treated for minor injuries.
The statement says the explosion happened in the production area of Winchester‰??s Rimfire operations.
‰??We appreciate the efforts of the first responders and our own staff who handled the situation,‰?? reads the statement. "Winchester is reviewing the situation to determine the cause of the incident.

BRENTWOOD, Mo. (KMOV.com) -- Hazmat crews identified a chemical officers came into contact with Tuesday morning in Brentwood as Fentanyl.

....
The Brentwood Fire Chief said the silver car was spotted driving erratically by other officers and St Louis County Metro Officers made a traffic stop in the parking lot outside of Best Buy off of Eager Road.

Fire Chief Terry Kurten said an officer made contact with the chemical, which was later identified by the Hazmat investigators as Fentanyl, and began to show symptoms. Kurten said a pill broke which caused the exposure.

Kurten said the officer felt numb and light-headed with tingling fingers.

The officer's partner called for backup, and both officers were transported to the hospital as a precaution, but are now doing fine.

ROCKAWAY TWP. -- A chlorine leak Tuesday afternoon at Picatinny Arsenal was brought under control with minimal spread into the air.

A caller reported smelling an odor of chlorine in the area shortly after 1:30 p.m., according to Public Affairs Specialist Eric Kowal.

Picatinny Arsenal Fire & Emergency Services quickly responded. Members of the Morris County HAZMAT team also were called to the scene as a precaution after initial reports suggested the possibility of a chemical spill.

However, authorities determined that there was only a small leak and no actual spill, Kowal said.

"There was a small leak in a supply unit for one of our two water treatment facilities, but the amount was negligible," he said. "No one had to be evacuated or treated, and at no time did the leak pose a threat."

EPA MOVES TO BAN TOXIC PAINT-STRIPPER CHEMICAL FOR SOME ‰?? BUT NOT ALL ‰?? USES

In the past year, major retailers such as Lowe‰??s and Home Depot have pulled a toxic chemical used in paint strippers, methylene chloride, from their shelves. The families of those who have died after exposure to the substance have begged leaders of the Environmental Protection Agency to finalize a ban that the agency proposed on Jan. 19, 2017 ‰?? a day before President Barack Obama left office. And in May, then-EPA Administrator Scott Pruitt pledged to do just that.

But late last month, the EPA sent proposals to the Office of Management and Budget that would allow commercial operators to continue using the product as long as they underwent training, while banning its use by consumers. The two draft final rules, which are not yet public but are mentioned in the database of the Office of Information and Regulatory Affairs, have sparked an outcry from congressional Democrats and public health advocates who had sought an outright ban on the chemical.

‰??Despite explicit assurances provided to my office that EPA would finalize a ban that protected both consumer and commercial users from this dangerous chemical, the Trump EPA appears to have failed to live up to those assurances,‰?? said Sen. Thomas R. Carper (Del.), the top Democrat on the Senate Environment Committee. ‰??I will do everything in my power to ensure that the final rule takes all needed steps to ban a chemical so dangerous that it has killed dozens of Americans, including trained professionals who were taking precautions on the job.‰??

BOSTON (WWLP) - Firefighters joined state lawmakers on Monday to share a powerful message about items in your home that contain poisonous flame retardant chemicals.

According to the American Chemical Council, many of the flame retardants in household products and children's toys are ineffective.

"They don't work, they cause greater harm. You have that right?" asked Representative Marjorie Decker, one of the bill's sponsors. "When these retardants that don't work are applied, what we do see is that we don't see a difference in flames, what we do see is an increase in smoke, poisonous smoke."

Sixteen states including Massachusetts are working on legislation that would restrict certain fire retardant chemicals in toys, car seats, strollers, and other household products.

JEFFERSON COUNTY, Ga. (WJBF) - First responders, the Georgia Department of Transportation and many others on the scene of a train derailment in Bartow, Ga.

"Finally got a GSP helicopter in here and they flew over the scene and there's crews down there now. It appears that they have 6 train cars that have left the track," said Mayor Robert Morris.

The calls came in close to 8:30 p.m. on January 6th. The derailment caused Hydrogen Peroxide to be released into the air. Those who live in Bartow were told to evacuate immediately.

Mayor Morris said, "Stay out until we tell you to come back. This is going to be an on-going event and no telling how long it's going to last."

At 2:00 a.m. on January 7th, Jefferson County EMA Director Jim Anderson confirmed the evacuation radius of Bartow shrunk from seven miles to three.

EDU DEPT ASKS DIRECTORATES TO SUBMIT SAFETY CERTIFICATES

The school education department has taken note of the non-submission of requisite certificates related to lab chemical safety, building safety, fire and emergency along with a no objection certificate (NoC) from the traffic department by the Directorates of School Education of Kashmir and Jammu while recommending cases of recognition and extension of private institutes.
The department grants recognition and extension to private educational institutes of J&K on the basis of affiliation by the J&K Board of School Education viz-a-viz recommendations of the Director, School Education, Kashmir/Jammu. There are more than 5,000 private educational institutions in the state. The strength of private schools in Jammu division is around 2,726.

Sources said it was observed that the head of departments, while recommending the cases of private schools, were not submitting the requisite certificates, which caused a delay in the disposal of such cases. They said even an NOC from the traffic department was not being submitted while recommending the cases.
The sources said the main reason behind the non-submission of requisite certificates by the directorate was incomplete information provided by the management of private schools.

Importance of safety
We must also communicate the importance of safety‰??the newest ACS core value‰??in academia, industry, and government laboratories and in chemical demonstrations and outreach activities. In 2018, ACS president Peter K. Dorhout emphasized laboratory safety, and I fully support that continuing effort. My 2019 focus is on safety writ large: safety in the environment, including recovery after disasters such as fires, hurricanes, and floods. Chemistry can help in the cleanup. And anywhere there‰??s a natural disaster there are always safety issues. I am happy to be working with the ACS Division of Chemical Health and Safety and other sponsoring divisions on national meeting programming on the following topics:
‰?ü Bridging the (safety) gap between academia and industry
‰?ü Chemical safety issues in disaster recovery
‰?ü Safety and the environment: Chemistry‰??s impact on water
