HASTINGS STUDENTS EVACUATED AFTER CHEMICAL SPILL
Tags: New_Zealand, education, release, response, mercury
Students and teachers of a Hastings school were taken to Hawke's Bay Hospital this morning after a chemical spill.
Parents were asked to collect their children from Hastings' Camberley School this morning after a "toxic smell" was detected in school buildings.
The Hastings fire service was called to the school just after 10am this morning to deal with the chemical spill. Fire services from Napier were also called to assist.
Central Fire communications shift manager David Miekle said there had been a small amount of mercurcy spilled from a broken thermometor.
He said a number of students and teachers had been affected, and were taken to Hawke's Bay Hospital as a precaution.
Fire Service assistant area commander Nigel Hall told Hawke's Bay Today it was believed the spill occured on Friday, with the mercury leaking into carpets at the school over the weekend.

CHEMICAL USED TO KILL LICE LINKED TO KIDS' BAD BEHAVIOR
Tags: public, discovery, environmental, pesticides
(NEWSER) ‰?? Here's something else not to like about lice, mosquitoes, and fleas. An insecticide used to kill them‰??pyrethroids‰??might be linked to behavior issues in children as young as 6, a French study suggests. The researchers, noting the effects the chemical had on the nervous systems of insects, wondered how it affected humans, notably children. They tested the urine of about 300 pregnant women and, six years later, their children, according to the study published in Occupational & Environmental Medicine. Children with the highest levels of pyrethroids in their urine were three times more likely to have behavioral problems than kids with lower levels. The problems might be external (kids being defiant or disruptive) or internal (a reluctance to ask for help) depending on the specific type of pyrethroid they were exposed to, the study said.
"The pesticide class studied are considered 'safe' pesticides and this study is cause for concern as to how safe it really is," says a child psychatrist at Lenox Hill Hospital in New York City who reviewed the findings, per HealthDay News. But he cautions that the study finds only a correlation, not cause and effect. Along those lines, a doctor at Johns Hopkins characterizes the study as preliminary and says it should be followed up by further research, reports Yahoo. Still, a pediatric behaviorialist not involved with the research recommended that pregnant women use "common sense" when using insecticides and look for products that don't contain pyrethroids. (In an awful story out of Massachusetts, police say a homemade lice remedy proved fatal for a girl.)

SULFURIC ACID LEAK CONTAINED AT D.C. COOK NUCLEAR PLANT

BRIDGMAN, MI -- D.C. Cook Nuclear Plant notified the State of Michigan of a sulfuric acid tank leaking over 1,000 gallons of acid into the tank's berm.
The event did not involve any nuclear material, Nuclear Regulatory Commission Senior Public Affairs Officer Viktoria Mitlyng said.
The leak was identified coming from a drain line flange about 10 a.m. Wednesday, March 1, the NRC said, and plant officials notified the state about 1 p.m.
The berm is designed to contain over 15,000 gallons which is sufficient to collect the known capacity of the tank, according to an event notification from the NRC.
Cleanup of the sulfuric acid from the berm is ongoing and there was no release to the environment or nearby drains, the NRC reports.
Nuclear Regulatory Commission inspectors were also notified and will look at the plant's process to ensure proper steps are in place so remediation does not impact plant safety or operations, Mitlyng said.

SHERIFF: BEWARE OF METH LABS
Tags: us_OH, public, discovery, environmental, clandestine_lab
Methamphetamine labs are dangerous. When police dismantle them, they have to wear Hazmat suits, and fire department personnel are almost always called to the scene in case a fire breaks out.
Often, one-bottle ‰??shake and bake‰?? meth labs are used to manufacture the drug, and sometimes they are discarded along the side of the road as though they were common litter.
So how can citizens distinguish between a standard illegal dumpsite and one that contains evidence of meth manufacturing, and all the dangers that go along with it?
Athens County Sheriff Rodney Smith has provided a number of tips for citizens concerned that there may be something more than meets the eye to that trash bag on the side of the road.
He has partnered with the Athens County Major Crimes Unit ‰?? which is typically responsible for investigating and dismantling meth labs ‰?? to raise awareness of what citizens should look out for and avoid if such a meth dumpsite is found.

Lithium Innovations in Toledo burns as seen with a drone-mounted camera that proved useful in its debut.
An unmanned aerial vehicle provided a unique view and valuable information from the Lithium Innovations blaze in the 1300 block of Campbell Street. Police released photographs and videos Friday depicting flames across the burning roof.
For firefighters, the bird‰??s-eye perspective was key to assessing the property, department spokesman Pvt. Sterling Rahe said.
‰??That building was so large, it didn‰??t matter where you stood, you couldn‰??t really get a good overall visual of the structure to size it up,‰?? he said.

BETHLEHEM, Pa. ‰?? A mysterious odor at a Pennsylvania business park has sickened workers for the second time this week, sending several to the hospital with nausea and headaches.
About 400 people were made to leave businesses in Hanover Township just north of Bethlehem on Thursday morning.
Township Manager John Finnigan says five people went to the hospital with complaints of nausea and headaches.
By afternoon workers were being allowed back into the building.
The ordeal follows an odor complaint that caused evacuations and sent 31 people to hospitals for treatment of symptoms like vomiting and dizziness on Monday.
Finnigan says some complained of a gas smell when the heat turned on in the building Thursday.
Crews found no gas leak. Meters showed no signs of gases that could cause symptoms.
