In my experience, that is a 50/50 proposition; research labs in Earth Science can include work with biological materials which require ethanol as preservatives for samples. In addition, in many academic settings "a lab = a lab = a lab" and a room which is designated as earth science lab this year may be an organic lab 5 years from now (I've seen it happen).
The decision to vent or not vent flammable cabinets today should be well documented and the implications of this choice should be noted. Whether this factor will have an impact on a decision as to who gets that lab in 5 years is another issue...
