Students who treat with our health center are counseled and provided with free sharps containers to use in their dorms (providing our staff there is made aware that they use injectables).  They return them to the health center and swap them for new containers as needed.  In the case of staff, we have no formal mechanism for this, but when asked (or if we otherwise become aware of a need) we similarly provide sharps containers and their subsequent disposal.

The question has come up concerning students or personnel on campus who use injectable insulin, and what is to become of the syringes after use.  If there are other universities that have encountered this issue, I would appreciate hearing about how it was dealt with.
