See 29 CFR =A71910.151(b)   Medical services and first aid: “In the absence of an infirmary, clinic, or hospital in near proximity to the workplace which is used for the treatment of all injured employees, a person or persons shall be adequately trained to render first aid.”

You need “a person or persons” trained to provide first aid. It does not matter who is trained, but you need enough first aid trained employees to cover vacations, shift work, etc.

Basic first aid training with CPR should be sufficient. If you have automated external defibrillators (AEDs), employees should be trained to use those.

Subject: [DCHAS-L] Training for Use of First Aid Kits in Laboratories

Greetings all,

I’m taking an informal poll…

Is it required to provide first aid training for personnel in academic research labs that have simple first aid kits.

If so, is it given to everyone in the lab or limited to the PI’s and lab managers or supervisors?

Is the content of the training at an awareness level (that is adequate to apply a Band-Aid and call for help) or equivalent to Red Cross first aid training?

Many thanks,

Chris
