Subject: [DCHAS-L] Nano safety background info
Monona,< /p>
By way of providing backgr ound info for everyone, NIOSH has published a series of excellent guidance publications on nanotechnology that can be found here:
http://www.cdc.gov/niosh/topics/nanote ch/pubs.html
NIOSH=A1=AFs Current Intelligence Bulletin 6 3: Occupational Exposure to Titanium Dioxide < span class="tp-label">and the Current Intelligence Bulletin 65: Oc cupational Exposure to Carbon Nanotubes and Nanofibers explains their rationale for estab lishing an REL for nano TiO2 of 0.3 milligrams per cubic meter (mg/m3) and for CNT of 1.0 micrograms per cubic meter (=A6=CCg/m3). OSHA =A1=AFs webpage on nanotechnology provides a listing of current OSHA standa rds that may apply to nano in the workplace at: https://www.osha.gov/dsg/nanotechnology/nanotechnology.html and OSHA recommends the RELs for TiO2 and CNT defined in the NIOSH CIBs an d provides guidance on safe handling in their Fact Sheet: Working Safely with Nanomaterials which can be found at: https://www.osha.gov/Publications/OSHA_FS-3634.pdf p>
There are also ASTM and IS O standards on the safe handling of certain nanomaterials
The recent Fiberdome Settl ement Affirming the validity of a General Duty Clause citation for ex posures below OSHA PEL raises the possibility of OSHA action against a firms using NM producer who are n=A1=AFt adhering to the RELs. This settlement is discusses by the American Society of Safety Engineers at http://www.asse.org/en/inde x.php/govt_affairs/fiberdome-settlement-affirms-landmark-general-duty-citat ion-for-exposures-below-osha-pel/
