HAZMAT CALLED TO INVESTIGATE CHLORINE LEAK AT HIGHLAND PARK POOL

PITTSBURGH (KDKA) ? A Hazmat team was called when police reported a ?small? leak in a chlorine tank at the Highland Park Pool Thursday afternoon.
The incident occurred around noon, an hour before the pool was scheduled to open. Four employees were at the pool at the time.
?It?s deadly; it?s very deadly,? said Pittsburgh Operations Chief Guy Costa, describing the situation.
Around noon, workers were moving canisters of chlorine, and then something went wrong.
?As they were moving them, one of the tops snapped off, so we could have a major leak,? Costa said.
Thankfully, no one was in the pool. The canister, about five-feet tall, was filled with liquid chlorine, about 100 pounds. Once the chlorine hits the air, it becomes a gas.

FIRE SCARE AGAIN: CHEMICAL UNIT GUTTED IN P?KULA, OWNER BOOKED NARROW ESCAPE
Tags: India, industrial, fire, response, flammables
A major tragedy was averted with no loss of life after a chemical manufacturing factory was gutted in fire on Thursday morning in Panchkula. The owner of the factory, Dharam Paul, was booked by the police but no arrests were made.
The fire broke out at Paul Water Treatment Services, on plot number 213 in Industrial Area, Panchkula, at about 6.45am and it took nine fire tenders working for 32 rounds to douse the flames after seven hours.
As per information, after the factory caught fire, within minutes the flames could be seen coming out from the building as chemicals ignited the flames easily. The security guard of the factory sounded the fire department who reached the spot with five fire tenders from Panchkula city. Later, four more fire tenders, two each from Kalka and Chandigarh, were called in the service.
Informing fire officer SS Malik said, ?We had to call for more fire tenders as the fire was massive. The factory had inflammable chemical substance which caught the fire easily and thus made it spread across factory in minutes. It took us about seven hours to extinguish the flames.?
The owner was booked under sections 285 (negligent conduct with respect to fire or combustible matter), 336 (act endangering life or personal safety of others) of the Indian Penal Code and sections 3, 4, 5 under the Explosive Substance Act.

CHEMICAL REACTION MISTAKEN FOR FIRE

Three workers required hospital treatment after they were affected by toxic fumes from a chemically reacting drum of ink at a liquid recycling plant.
The Fire Service received a call at 12.30am to Solvent Rescue in Maldon St, Sydenham, where there were reports of smoke coming from the roof of the premises.
En route, firefighters escalated the seriousness of the incident having seen a sizeable smoke cloud over the area, a Fire Service spokesman said.
When they arrived at the liquid recycling plant, firefighters discovered the smoke was not coming from a fire, but instead from drum of ink that was overheating and fuming due to a chemical reaction.
"The printer ink was heating and fuming - the smoke which was seen was actually fumes," said fire services shift manager Andrew Norris.
Three late-shift workers from nearby premises were affected by the toxic fumes and sent to hospital.
Fire services cooled the liquid and handed control of the site back to the property owner when it was stabilised, Norris said.

MECCA ? Authorities shut down 6th and Coahuilla streets in Mecca Wednesday evening after a pool equipment malfunction caused a hydrochloric-acid spill at the Mecca Community Center.
The incident was reported shortly before 7 p.m., according to the Riverside County Fire Department.
Fire authorities initially misidentified the community center as Mecca Elementary School in a news release.
Four people inside the community center were evacuated and a hazardous materials team made up of the fire department and environmental health officials investigated the spill, according to the department.

CHEMICAL POLLUTION OF EUROPEAN WATERS WORSE THAN PREVIOUSLY THOUGHT
Tags: France, public, discovery, environmental, toxics
A recent study shows for the first time that toxic chemicals pose ecological risks to European waters, as levels are much worse than previously thought.
European Union states, as required by the Water Framework Directive, had declared that they would make substantial water quality improvements by 2015. However, new research - conducted by the Institute for Environmental Sciences Landau together with the Helmholtz Centre for Environmental Research and fellow scientists from France and Switzerland - has shown that these goals are most likely unattainable. The reason: current water quality assessments don't account for the effects of toxic chemicals.

CHEMICAL MIX-UP TO BLAME FOR ST. JACOBS BARN FIRE
Tags: Canada, industrial, fire, response, biodiesel
A farmhand mixing chemicals accidentally prompted an explosion and fire that destroyed a barn near St. Jacobs, authorities say.
....
Their efforts were hampered by a shortage of water.
Crews had to shuttle tanker trucks down to Conservation Road to refill ? a 10-minute round-trip which also left some Waterloo residents with low or no water pressure.
Firefighters then remained at the scene overnight, extinguishing hotspots and ensuring the flames didn?t flare up once again.
Investigators say chemicals were being mixed inside the barn to produce biodiesel fuel.
The barn, which was primarily used for storage, was destroyed.
