Director of Laboratory Safety and Environmental Compliance

The George Mason University, Environmental Health and Safety Office is seeking a Director of Laboratory Safety and Environmental Compliance to oversee and manage comprehensive programs in biosafety (BSL-2, BSL-3), chemical safety, radiation safety (e.g., radioactive materials, x-ray-producing instruments), laser safety, high magnetic field safety (NMR, MRI), and environmental compliance.

Required Qualifications:

? Master?s of science in industrial hygiene, life sciences, engineering, or a related field. Experience in a similar role with multiple direct reports will be considered in lieu of the educational requirement;
? Familiarity with laboratory safety practices, principles and regulations;
? Familiarity with environmental compliance regulations;
? Successful completion of a medical evaluation to include being fit to wear a respirator and receiving required vaccinations; and
? For hazardous materials response purposes, the selected candidate must commit to residing no more than 25 miles from either the Fairfax or Prince William campus.

Preferred Qualifications:

? Supervisory experience to include creating professional development plans, performance plans, and conducting personnel evaluations;
? Prior experience managing a direct expenditures budget;
? Prior hands-on experience managing health and safety programs, hazardous materials, radioactive materials, BSL-3 operations, and performing risk assessments;
? Prior hands-on experience with hazardous waste, AST/UST management, air permitting, and developing contingency plans (hazardous materials, spill prevention control and countermeasures, and environmental management systems, etc.); and
? Certification in industrial hygiene or possess a Certified Safety Professional credential.

This position manages laboratory safety and environmental compliance programs at multiple locations in northern Virginia to include the Fairfax campus, Prince William campus, and the Smithsonian-Mason School of Conservation in Front Royal, Va. Travel between these locations is required.
