One lane of U.S. Route 22 in Weirton remains closed after a chemical spill.
As of 5 p.m., one lane of U.S. 22 westbound between Three Springs Drive and Harmon Creek is closed. The Harmon Creek exit is also closed.
Dispatchers received a report just after 3 p.m. that a 300-gallon container filled with the chemical HVG1 fell from a truck. The chemical is a water-gelling material used for fracking.
The driver for FTS International told investigators he swerved to avoid another crash. Officials verified that there was a crash in that area.

EXPLOSION HITS PLANT IN E CHINA

HANGZHOU, June 27 (Xinhua) -- An explosion occurred at a chemical plant in east China's Zhejiang Province on Thursday, local firefighters said.
Authorities received a report about a liquid chlorine tank explosion at 5 p.m. from the plant, which is located in the city of Dongyang.
Five fire trucks and 30 firefighters have been sent to the scene of the explosion. A rescue headquarters has been set up.
The explosion is believed to have caused a liquid chlorine leak, which may harm nearby residents and the environment, according to the headquarters.
Firefighters have evacuated nearby residents. No casualties have been reported thus far.
An investigation into the cause of the incident is under way.

The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency doesn't need to wait on new legislation to clamp down on chemical dangers such as the ammonium nitrate stockpile that blew up in West, the top U.S. Senate environmental official said in a hearing Thursday.
Sen. Barbara Boxer, D-Calif., said the EPA needs to add ammonium nitrate and other highly reactive chemicals to its list of "extremely hazardous chemicals" that can only be stored with an approved remediation plan.
Boxer, chairwoman of the Senate Environment and Public Works Committee, blasted the EPA for failing to adopt recommendations in 2002 from the U.S. Chemical Safety Board Ñ which has no regulatory authority Ñ to address reactive hazards from chemicals such as ammonium nitrate. She said the EPA should add the fertilizer to the list.

11 FIRE BRIGADES TO CONTROL FIRE AT A CHEMICAL PLANT

Eleven fire brigades were necessary to control a fire at a chemical plant in Ried im Traunskreis (Upper-Austria) last night.
A witness alerted the fire brigade in Gossendorf just before midnight yesterday (Wednesday). The second level of alarm was raised as soon as the fire fighters got to the scene of the fire.
Thick smoke was coming out of the roof of the office complex. The firemen were able to save the fire from reaching the chemicals through their quick action.
The fire had started on the top floor but was rapidly spreading to an intermediate ceiling.
The 11 fire brigades involved in the operation had to open the roof to put out the fire.
The chemical firm manufactured cosmetic products, paint emulsions and medicine.

FIRE AT LEVIN SCHOOL SCIENCE BLOCK

The Fire Service has extinguished a fire during which chemicals were also spilled in a science block at Horowhenua College, in Levin.
Members of the Fire Service and others affected by the smoke and chemical fumes are going through a decontamination tent as a routine measure, a fire service spokesman says.
They are still trying to identify the substance. A second alarm was raised to get a hazardous material team to the scene, the spokesman says.
A number of students were reportedly overcome by the fumes.
An ambulance has been dispatched to the college.

MAIN ROAD CLOSED AFTER CHEMICAL SPILL

The Orange Road was closed to traffic for almost eight hours following a chemical spill on Wednesday afternoon.
Emergency services including police, Fire and Rescue NSW, Rural Fire Service (RFS), the HAZMAT 280 unit from Dubbo, ambulance and RMS personnel attended the incident, four kilometres from Parkes.
A second spill was later detected in Dalton Street.
Police report that at approximately 4.20pm the driver of a pan-tech truck was travelling east when several 200 litre drums of chemicals including Creosote fell from the rear of the vehicle.
The driver of the truck was attempting to clean the spill as Police arrived on the scene.
When approaching the truck, the two officers detected a strong chemical smell and accompanied the driver from the immediate area.
The Henry Parkes Way was closed between Parkes and Manildra with traffic control crews diverting traffic via Eugowra.
Another Creosote chemical spill was detected about 5.45pm in Dalton Street and it is believed the same truck was responsible prior to the Orange Road incident.
Forbes Fire Brigade attended to this spill.
Approximately 30 litres of chemical were lost - the majority of which occurred during the second spill.

Emergency crews are responding to an explosion and chemical fire at Voltaix in Upper Mount Bethel Township, according to emergency radio reports.
Calls for the reported explosion at 103 Demi Road in the Portland Industrial Park started at 10:05 p.m.
The scene was chaotic at the chemical plant and smoke was rising in the area. Dispatchers requested a "full response" and less than an hour later called for more firefighters.
There were no immediate reports of injuries. A Warren County Hazardous Materials truck was driving to the site at 11:50 p.m.
Portland Borough Councilman Steven Knott said borough and township firefighters were initially on standby while Voltaix personnel fought the fire inside the facility.
Voltaix, which opened last year, is mostly self-contained and there were no immediate reports of the fire spreading to another property, Portland Mayor Lance Prator said.

METHODS: Data were obtained from the 2010 National Health Interview Survey (NHIS). NHIS is a multistage probability sample survey of the civilian non-institutionalized population of the US. Prevalence rates and their variances were calculated using SUDAAN to account for the complex NHIS sample design.
RESULTS: The data for 2010 were available for 17,524 adults who worked in the 12 months that preceded interview. The highest prevalence rates of hazardous workplace exposures were typically in agriculture, mining, and construction. The prevalence rate of frequent handling of or skin contact with chemicals, and of non-smokers frequently exposed to SHS at work was highest in mining and construction. Outdoor work was most common in agriculture (85%), construction (73%), and mining (65%). Finally, frequent occupational exposure to VGDF was most common among mining (67%), agriculture (53%), and construction workers (51%).
CONCLUSION: We identified industries and occupations with the highest prevalence of potentially hazardous workplace exposures, and provided targets for investigation and intervention activities.

Work safety authorities in Shanghai summoned a meeting on Tuesday to emphasize safety checks on dangerous chemicals after explosions occurred at two chemical plants in the city on June 23 and 24, according to the Shanghai Administration of Work Safety.
The work safety administration pledged to investigate the two accidents and punish those who are responsible. Corporate representatives from the two companies will receive admonition from the administration.
Six people were injured in an explosion at Shanghai Shengying Chemical Co, Ltd in the city's Jinshan district on June 24. One day earlier, a chemical leak caused an explosion and fire at the Shanghai Huayi Acrylic Acid Co in Pudong district.

WASHINGTON Ñ During a federal investigation of an industrial disaster, which objective should take precedence: figuring out how it happened or finding evidence of a crime? That is likely to be a critical question raised at a Senate hearing on Thursday about the continuing inquiry into a fertilizer explosion in April that killed at least 14 people, injured roughly 200 and leveled much of a Texas town.
The hearing before the Committee on Environment and Public Works comes about a month after the Chemical Safety Board, an independent federal agency responsible for investigating industrial chemical accidents, sent a letter to Senator Barbara Boxer, the California Democrat who leads the committee. In the letter, the agency complained that it had been systematically blocked from gaining access to evidence, witnesses, documents and the blast site by the federal Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives, which until recently cordoned off the area as a crime scene.

ST. BERNARD PARISH, La. -- Paris Road has reopened and the Chalmette ferry has resumed servce, nearly four hours after firefighters were called to an overturned tanker truck and chemical leak.
St. Bernard Parish Fire Chief Thomas Stone said the overturned truck near Chalmette Refining was leaking a small amount of a "caustic soda."
Paris Road near St. Bernard Highway was closed while crews cleaned up the leak, and the Chalmette ferry was briefly taken out of service as well because of the incident. Both have since reopened as of 4 p.m.

ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. (AP) - Authorities say an item that exploded on a parked FedEx truck in Albuquerque was a tire.
There are no reported injuries.
Albuquerque police say the explosion was reported just before 7 p.m. Wednesday.
A police bomb squad was called to the scene to assess the situation along with an Albuquerque Fire Department hazmat crew.
Authorities say the driver of the FedEx truck lives in the area and typically parks his vehicle at the location of the explosion.
Police say residents in the vicinity of the truck were briefly evacuated until authorities determined what had exploded.

LATEST: Four students were treated for inhaling chemical fumes after a fire at Horowhenua College - the second fire in two days.
The fire service was called to the college in Levin at about 11.30am and is still at the scene.
Levin deputy chief fire officer Carl Beissel said the fire started in a locked and empty science lab.
There were chemicals involved; however the fire service would not confirm which ones.
Students from the school were evacuated on to backfield and roads were shut between Trafalgar and Bath St.
Four students and four adults were believed to have inhaled chemical fumes and required decontamination.
Two firefighters also required decontamination.
A small area in the science room was damaged in the fire.
Four fire crews from Levin, Otaki and Waitarere Beach were at the incident.
Horowhenua College was also the scene of a fire yesterday after a plastic toilet roll holder was set alight.
