NEW ORLEANS, April 7, 2013 Ñ The American Chemical Society (ACS) today announced awarding the first grants in a new initiative intended to increase understanding of the science underpinning global climate change among thousands of people around the country.
Bassam Z. Shakhashiri, Ph.D., 2012 president of ACS, the world's largest scientific society, said that 11 of the Society's local sections will receive the first ACS Presidential Climate Science Challenge Grants. The local sections, which are smaller subdivisions of the Society, will use the grants in implementing innovative ways to encourage use of the ACS Climate Science Toolkit to engage a wide variety of audiences. Shakhashiri, a professor of chemistry at the University of Wisconsin-Madison, announced the recipients during the ACS' 245th National Meeting & Exposition, being held here through Thursday.
The ACS Climate Science Toolkit is a web-based resource that explains the chemistry and physics of climate change. Launched last December, it was one of the major initiatives of Shakhashiri's term as ACS president.

MIDDLETOWN - A storage facility in Middletown caught fire last night, destroying five units within the facility.
The fire broke out just after 11 p.m. last night at the Orange Storage Facility on Robertson Drive. More than 60 firefighters responded, and a hazmat team was also called to the scene after dangerous pool chemicals were found in one of the units.
Firefighters say most of the units that were destroyed contained clothing and furniture. No injuries were reported.

Just before 8:00, hazmat crews were called to SmithField Foods Company, the former ConAgra Plant, at 200 S. Second Street in Lincoln Saturday night.
According to Captain Dan Ripley, fire crews were called to the plant for a medical emergency. After talking to the patient, crews learned there were some sort of equipment operating which would release carbon monoxide and may have effected other construction workers in the area..
Captain Ripley said at that point, they called in several more crews for a possible hazardous materials incident.
Battalion Chief Tim Linke said there were extremely high levels of carbon monoxide that did sicken some construction workers doing excavation work underground, to put in some pipes.
The meat packing plant was not operating at the time, so only nine construction workers were victims of the poisonous gas. The original patient was transported to the hospital and his condition is not considered not life threatening. All others were treated at the scene and released.

EWING - Emergency crews, including hazardous materials specialists, responded to an alarm at a laboratory after a chemical reaction set off the sprinkler system, police said today.
At about 11:55 p.m. last night, Ewing police were dispatched to Tyger Scientific, a chemical lab at 324 Stokes Avenue, after a burglar and fire alarm were set off. Emergency crews arrived to find water coming out from under the front doors, a police release said.
Fire crews entered the building and found a laboratory filled with a vapor and a sprinkler head activated.
A Hazmat crew was called to the scene and a representative from the Department of Environmental Protection determined a chemical reaction inside the lab set off the sprinkler and that everything was contained to that one room, the release said.
There was no threat to the surrounding area, no injuries and no foul play was suspected, said the police. The scene was cleared around 4 a.m. on this morning.
Tyger Scientific manufactures and distributes more than 5,000 synthetic and specialty chemicals, according to its website, and operates research and manufacturing facilities throughout the United States and China. The Ewing facility is the company's U.S. headquarters.

RICHMOND, Calif. Ñ Contra Costa County officials announced Friday that they plan to conduct an extensive safety audit of Chevron's Richmond refinery where a major fire occurred in August, even as officials raised questions about the ability of regulators to effectively monitor such facilities.
The county sent a letter to Chevron today stating its intention to inspect and evaluate the refinery's safety culture and practices, Supervisor John Gioia said Friday at a hearing in Richmond on the refinery fire. The hearing, led by state Sen. Loni Hancock, D-Oakland, and Assemblywoman Nancy Skinner, D-Berkeley, included reports from Cal/OSHA and other regulatory agencies on the fire investigation and regulatory response.

LUDHIANA: Four workers of a chemical factory were injured, two of them seriously, when an explosion took place and resulted in a fire in Beantpura area on Chandigarh Road, near Samrala Chowk, on Saturday morning.
The police said that labourers Raj Kumar, 33, a resident of Beantpura; Vishav Nath, 33, of Janakpuri; Raj Mandal, 38; and Santosh Kumar, 33; both of Puneet Nagar, were injured in a blast that took place when Santosh was loading about 3.5 quintals of chemicals in a boiler at around 10am. The blast caused a fire that engulfed the factory.
Santosh, the injured labourer who was loading the chemical, said, "Like any other day, I was loading the chemical when some drops of it fell down and came in direct contact with the fire, resulting in an explosion. My hair got burnt and some parts of the face received minor burn injuries."
"Pramod and I rushed out of the factory in time, but the other two labourers couldn't escape in time and were severely injured," he said.

Hazmat crews called to BA acid leak - Tulsa hazmat crews were called in to help Broken Arrow fire crews on the scene of hydrochloric acid leak Saturday morning.
Officials say the leak was stopped by a containment curb in the work area. No injuries were reported.
The incident happened around 8 a.m. at an industrial building near 61st Street and Aspen Avenue in Broken Arrow. Broken Arrow crews called hazmat because there is an electrical charge involved in the process being ran at the time of the leak, officials say.
Hazmat was able to turn off the electrical charge, stopping the chemical reaction, and turn on ventilation fans.

A Marin County toxic materials crew was dispatched to Novato on Friday to remove 40 gallons of cyanide and other chemicals a real estate agent removed from a home for sale, a fire official said.
Novato fire Capt. Alex Bowlds said the broker was showing a Novato home that was in a probate sale because its owner had died. The deceased homeowner was apparently an inventor who used chemicals, and the broker found the stash of cyanide, formaldehyde and other toxic compounds in liquid and powdered form, Bowlds said.
The broker removed the chemicals and brought them to her husband's auto body shop in Bel Marin Keys, thinking the business could dispose of them. The shop realized it could not handle the chemicals and called police. Police looked at the chemicals and called the fire department at about 1:30 p.m.
The fire department summoned the county's hazardous materials team in to removed the potential lethal assembly of chemicals, a process that took five hours. Emergency officials notified hospitals that the chemicals were being moved in case there was an accident.
The chemicals were taken to a Novato fire station for storage overnight, and the hazardous materials specialists planned to destroy them Saturday. No leaks or injuries occurred during the incident.

Tyson Foods Inc. has agreed to pay a $3.95 million civil penalty to settle alleged violations of Clean Air Act regulations covering the prevention of chemical accidents at its facilities in Iowa, Kansas, Missouri and Nebraska, the Justice Department and Environmental Protection Agency announced Friday.
Tyson, headquartered in Springdale, Ark., is the world's largest processor and marketer of chicken, beef and pork.
Tyson Foods Inc. has worked cooperatively with the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency to resolve concerns over the maintenance of refrigeration systems at food production plants in four states, company spokesman Gary Mickelson said in a statement.

A Tennessee man suffered burns to his upper body and face after a meth lab exploded at his mother's home, according to WATE.com.
Authorities said the chemical flash burn injured the man's face, neck, arms and hands. The outbuilding he was in also caught on fire and damaged the siding of his mother's mobile home.
The man told deputies he was trying a new way of making the drug when the explosion happened, according to WATE.com.

Four industrial workers were killed and as many as 18 injured, two of them seriously in an explosion at a chemical factory in Boisar here, fire officials said on Friday.
The mishap took place around 10.45 am at Aarti Drugs in Tarapur MIDC area after a nitrate reaction during the production of Methyl Nitro Imitazole, led to fumes resulting in the explosion of a chemical container, they said.
Fire Brigade and Revenue officials rushed to the spot and carried out rescue operations following which the injured were admitted to local hospital. Two of them who were critical have been shifted to KEM hospital in Mumbai, MIDC Fire officer B S Kapse said.
The impact of the explosion was felt by residents in 10 km radius as asbestos sheets, glasses of nearby factories and homes were shattered.

LAWRENCE (CBS) - About 50 chemical bottle bombs have been discovered on the streets of Lawrence over the past few weeks, many of which were already exploded.
Officials in that city say it's a dangerous situation, and they are warning residents to be careful.
Fire Capt. Robert Wilson told WBZ NewsRadio 1030's Karen Twomey that chemicals are packed into soda bottles, and they explode when mixed.
That explosion is powerful enough to possibly cause serious burns, blindness, and even the loss of fingers or a hand.
"It creates a vapor cloud. Whatever is in there spreads. The danger involved is great," Capt. Wilson said. "The worst-case scenario is they put one of these on the street, or on the sidewalk or next to a car; it doesn't explode; they walk away. A little kid comes along kicks it (or) picks it up, and now you have the explosion."

SANTA ANA METAL PLATING EXPLOSION PROMPTS EVACUATIONS

SANTA ANA, Calif. (KABC) -- A chemical explosion at a Santa Ana metal plating business prompted an evacuation Friday.
Hazmat crews responded to Precious Metal Plating located at 2635 South Orange Avenue following the blast and evacuated employees.
Nineteen employees were treated after they were exposed to chemicals. Two victims were transported to Western Medical Center with minor skin irritation after chemicals splashed on them. The remaining employees were treated and released at the scene.
The Orange County Fire Authority was called to the scene. The investigation into the source of the explosion is ongoing but authorities say one of the chemicals overheated and caused the explosion.

ROSEVILLE-
Crews spent several hours cleaning up a railroad car containing 16,000 gallons of a powerful acid when it started leaking.
Thursday afternoon, the Roseville Fire Department's HazMat team was called about the leak of ferric acid.
The tankcar was sitting in the Union Pacific Railyard.
It was leaking about 1 gallon a minute of the acid, which is commonly used for water treatment.
According to firefighters, the tankcar's rubber lining had been damaged, and the acid had eaten through the steel shell of the tank.

The workers at Royale Comfort Seating in Taylorsville, N.C., had a simple but grueling job. For 10 hours at a stretch they spray-glued pieces of polyurethane foam into shapes that became the spongy filling of cushions sold to many top furniture brands. Unfortunately, the glue contained a dangerous chemical known as n-propyl bromide, or nPB, and the spray guns left a yellowish fog in the air that coated everything in sight. Exposure to the toxic fumes left some workers so dizzy at the end of the day that they walked as if drunk.

More than 20 people taken to the hospital, after a carbon monoxide leak at a bowling alley.
Stow Firefighters were called to Sto-Kent Lanes around 11:40am Thursday, after someone had fainted.
Firefighters quickly determined that the cause was a carbon monoxide leak inside the facility. The facility was immediately evacuated, and Stow Fire Prevention shut the building down.
Approximately 30-35 customers were exposed to carbon monoxide, with twenty-seven or more transported to eight area hospitals.

The Piney Woods School is back to normal operations after an almost four-hour campus-wide lockdown spurred by a chlorine gas leak.
A school employee was doing routine maintenance on a chlorine tank when there was a leak. That happened earlier this morning, around 9 a.m., said Detrice Johnson, assistant director of development.
Roosevelt Sias, assistant physical plant manager, was overwhelmed by fumes and taken to the University of Mississippi Medical Center in Jackson, Johnson said.
The Mississippi Department of Environmental Quality was called to the campus and the leak has been secured, she said. MDEQ has given the OK for the school to resume its normal schedule, she said.

(Reuters) - A "rank" odor that has spread across parts of greater New Orleans may be linked to a leak from the 192,500-barrel-per-day Chalmette refinery, the U.S. Coast Guard investigating the smell said on Thursday.
Chalmette, a joint venture between Exxon Mobil Corp and Venezuela's national oil company Petroleos de Venezuela SA (PDVSA), reported a leak early Wednesday morning but it had been quickly contained at the plant, the Coast Guard said.
"Chalmette Refinery has worked with (the Louisiana Department of Environmental Quality) and Coast Guard response teams most of the day to survey and evaluate all potential sources of odors in the area," the Coast Guard said.
"The facility reported and quickly stopped a leak early Wednesday morning and, while the investigation is still ongoing, officials currently believe it could be the source of the odor," it said in a statement.
Exxon Mobil did not immediately respond to questions.
