I thought that some DCHAS-L members might be interested in this controversy...

Subject: Time Sensitive: Update on Colloid Name Change Request

THIS MESSAGE BEING SENT AT THE REQUEST OF MIKE MORELLO, CHAIR, COMMITTEE ON DIVISIONAL ACTIVITIES (DAC)

Dear Division Officer/Councilor:

Last summer, COLL advised DAC of a request for the division to change its name from "Division of Colloid and Surface Chemistry" to "Division of Colloids, Surfaces, and Nanomaterials".

DAC alerted all divisions of the COLL request prior to the 2012 Philadelphia National Meeting. Six divisions - AGFD, CELL, INOR, ORGN, PMSE, POLY - registered opposition to the proposed name change. DAC discussed the matter in Philadelphia, and per COLL's request, no further action was taken by DAC since that time.

Recently, COLL asked DAC to move this matter forward. I want to share with you how we intend to do that in New Orleans.

First, DAC will discuss the matter on Saturday, April 6, in a closed session of our Constitution and Bylaws subcommittee. Then, DAC will discuss the matter in full committee on Sunday. As part of that discussion, we will allocate 15 minutes for guests to stop by and comment on the COLL proposal. If you are interested in commenting, please come to the Hilton Riverside, Napoleon Ballroom on the 3rd Floor from 9:45a - 10a.

No later than Friday, April 5, would you please alert me (mike.morello**At_Symbol_Here**pepsico.com ) and the staff liaison, John Katz (j_katz**At_Symbol_Here**acs.org), of your intention to comment, so we have an idea of how many people to expect?.

In addition, DAC will make a presentation on this matter to the Division Officers and Councilors Caucus on Tuesday, April 9. The caucus runs from 4-6pm in the E. Morial Convention Center, Room 345, which is above halls D,E,F.

After the New Orleans meeting concludes, we will report back to you again on this matter.

Sincerely,

Mike Morello
Chair, Divisional Activities Committee
