My back of the envelope calculations shows our is roughly 1360 sq feet; that includes a 140 sq foot interior room for storage of cats, buckets of preserved organs, models, etc.

There are 25 four foot wide tables; each table is designed as a single student station. Additional space in the room is dedicated to physiology equipment, some additional casework, a large sink, a hand washing sink and lecture (AV, podium). The room is dedicated to AP courses but occasionally used for some outreach activities during "dark" periods.

Generally speaking the labs are capped at 20. I've had outreach visits larger than that and during night time lab practicals there are more than 20 in the room. I've never inquired about the fire code capacity, but 49 seems to be a magic number for classrooms unless they have additional exits (this room technically has 3, but one dumps into a second room not the hallway and two of them are side by side (it used to be multiple rooms with the dividing wall between the two doors).

Depending on how you measure the square feet with the interior room and how you calculate student occupancy it roughly comes to 50 square feet per student +/-. If you go much smaller than that you'll need space outside the classroom for storage, prep, clean up, etc.

Greetings all,

I am trying to figure out how big an anatomy and physiology lab needs to be. Do you think I could use the fire code classroom occupancy load of 20 net per person or would you use shop and vocational room area of 50 net per person. Is there a resource for this? Does anyone know if there is a student limit for these types of classes.

Thanks,
