A d
ay after a fire burned through a storage yard at an agricultural supply busi
ness near the edge of Oxnard, authorities have found no indications of signi
ficant chemical exposure.
The Ventura County Environmental Health Division today w
as continuing to investigate the effects of the blaze at Mugu Farm Supplies,
3481 Sturgis Road, but officials said their initial investigation turne
d up no major problems.
Fertilizer and pesticides burned off during the fire, and off
icials worked to prevent runoff, said Greg Smith, manager of the county Envi
ronmental Health Division's Hazardous Materials program. He said it's less o
f a problem for such materials to burn than to run off into the surrounding e
nvironment.
"No smoke from a fire is safe, but this is not more hazardous than what
you would find in a typical fire," Smith said.
The building where the fire began was destro
yed, but no one was injured in the fire. Pacific Coast Irrigation, which is s
eparated from Mugu Farm Supplies by a chain-link fence, was not affected, Oa
tman said.

A railroad official says several cars have derailed
in a switching yard and thousands of gallons of a toxic chemical spilled. B
urlington Northern Santa Fe spokesman Gus Melonas (mel-OWN'-us) says the tra
in was moving at less than 5 mph in the Pasco yard when seven cars went off t
he tracks about 5 p.m. Sunday. He says a valve on a tanker car was dama
ged, causing the leak. By 9:30 p.m. about 12,500 gallons of hydroc
hloric acid had spilled. Melonas says there were no injuries. He says offici
als have determined there was no threat to the public with the spill occurri
ng in a remote area of the yard, far away from any homes or businesses. The c
hemical can cause respiratory problems and skin and eye irritation. Melonas s
ays crews expected to be able to seal the leak tonight and put the
cars back on the tracks Monday. The derailment has not affected operations o
n the mainline, which handles about 30 trains daily.

A neigh

oxygen mask, and his wife was breathing on her own. The names and condition

BREVARD - Emergency crews were at the scene of a possible met
hamphetamine lab fire in Transylvania County on Saturday.
div>
The blaze occurred on Mo
untain Glen Road in Brevard at about 5 p.m., FOX Carolina News reported
.
When p
olice, who were there on a disturbance call, confronted the three people ins
ide the home, someone sprayed the officers in the face with an unknown subst
ance, deputies said.
The residents then set the apartment on fire, police said.
Firefig
hters were able to put the fire out quickly, but one firefighter and three o
fficers were injured.
The three people in the home were taken into custody with cha
rges pending, police said.
Brevard City Manager Joseph Moore told FOX Carolina News
that a hazmat team did not find any substances at the scene, so they assume
that the chemical was some sort of flammable liquid.
According to Moore, three of t
he four first responders taken to an area hospital were released.
Investigators h
ave reopened all the apartment units at the scene except the apartment where
the fire occurred.
