Two people went to the hospital overnight following a head-on collision
between two dump trucks in Knox County.

Rural-Metro says the accident happened just before 2:30 a.m. on Raccoon
Valley Road near the Anderson County line.

Crews had to call in the heavy rescue squad in order to get one of the
drivers out. He went to UT Medical Center via Lifestar.
An ambulance took the other driver to the hospital.

Authorities on the scene say both men did not have any life threatening
injuries.

Right now Racoon Valley Road is closed in both directions as a result of
the accident.

They hope to have the road back open by 7:00 a.m.

The trucks were owned by the same company, which was doing some
over-night road repair work on Interstate 75 near Emory Road.

Hazmat was called in because close to 150 gallons of diesel fuel was
spilled into a near-by creek.

SAN ANTONIO -- A big rig crashed into the San Antonio River near
Interstate 10 and Probandt on Tuesday morning.

San Antonio fire officials said the driver lost control of the big rig
when he tried to avoid a multi-vehicle crash and went down an embankment
and into the river.
Special Operations Chief Jonathan Jones, with the San Antonio Fire
Department, said 300 gallons of diesel fuel spilled into the river.
"The hazmat team responded and was able to contain the spill," said
Jones. "We've already had the state out here. They've evaluated it."

URBANA =97 About 15 people were evacuated from a University of Illinois
laboratory building for about 40 minutes after some gas reportedly
leaked in one of the labs.

According to an Urbana Fire Department report, firefighters were called
to the Micro and Nanotechnology Laboratory, 208 N. Wright St., U, at
2:04 p.m. Monday to respond to a report of a gas leak.

Urbana Fire Department Division Chief Jeff McDuffy said people working
in one of the labs were changing a bottle when some residual gas,
identified as silane gas, began to escape, setting off an alarm.

McDuffy said the gas was contained within the lab room, and nobody was
injured. Those evacuated from the building were allowed to return at
about 2:45 p.m. Monday.

A chemical tank of a Sinopec plant in Guangzhou exploded at 13:20 on
Tuesday, reportedly injuring at least four, according to the Southern
Metropolis Daily.

Billows of smoke were seen rising from the desulfurization area of the
plant, where fire engines and ambulances rushed for rescue.

One of the evacuated workers said the gas level in the working area
exceeded the maximum allowable amount since Monday and fire trucks were
stationed in the plant in case of a fire breakout.

MENDON =97 An astute customer at Walmart helped lead police to charge
four teenagers in connection with two explosions of homemade bombs over
the weekend.

Police Detective Pamela Mason said tonight that a customer at the
Northbridge Wal-Mart found it peculiar that teenagers were purchasing
toilet bowl cleaner and aluminum foil.

After the customer saw news reports of the crimes that said police were
looking for the culprits, she called the Arson Watch tip line, Detective
Mason said.
...
Police Chief Ernest Horn said the two targets =97 the Alicante
Restaurant on Route 16 and a residence on Park Street =97 appeared to
have been chosen randomly by the group. Someone could have been
seriously hurt, the chief said, but he added that he didn't think the
teenagers were looking to hurt anyone.

The chemical devices were made by mixing liquid acid and other
ingredients in a clear plastic bottle about the size of a water bottle,
according to police. Once the chemicals are activated, a homemade bomb
can generate extreme heat with potential to cause burns, blindness or
other injuries. Police called it a =93Works Bomb=94 after the
inexpensive toilet bowl cleaner called The Works.

LOUISVILLE, Ky. -- For the second time in two months, emergency crews
were called to an explosion and fire at a Rubbertown chemical plant.
This one was at Eckart Aluminum on Campground Road.

Investigators are still searching for what sparked the fire at about 7
p.m. Monday.

Firefighters said 20 to 30 workers were in the plant when something
caused aluminum powder to ignite and explode inside a building.

Two workers were hurt and rushed to University Hospital, but one was
released hours later and the other sustained only minor injuries.

Emergency officials assessed the situation quickly and found there was
never any threat to the surrounding community.

The U.S. Centers for Disease Control & Prevention has traced
Salmonella Typhimurium infections to exposure in clinical and teaching
laboratories, according to an April 28 report. The strain involved in
the illnesses is one that is commercially available for use in
microbiology labs.

The outbreak identified by CDC involves 73 people from 35 states, with
the biggest number (six) from Pennsylvania. Of those 73, 44 had contact
with a microbiology laboratory in the week before they became ill.
Salmonella causes diarrhea, fever, and abdominal cramps, and usually
lasts 4-7 days.

Notably, what happened in the lab didn=92t stay in the lab: =93several
children who live in households with a person who works or studies in a
microbiology laboratory have become ill with the outbreak strain,=94 the
CDC report says. In some of those cases, Nature reports, the laboratory
worker didn=92t get ill-he or she just passed it on to household
members. One person died from the outbreak but CDC doesn=92t say who it
was; 10 others were hospitalized.

FRIDLEY, Minn. -- Three people were injured, and dozens of employees
evacuated after a reported nitric acid explosion at a Fridley metal
plating plant.

First responders got a 911 call shortly after 11 a.m. about an explosion
and fire at Incertec Plating located at 160 83rd Ave. NE in Fridley.

The fire was put out, but three employees were injured with chemical
burns. One of the three also suffered an injury from an exploding
container.

Rob Clark, director of operations for Incertec Plating, says the
evacuation was ordered mostly as a precaution. He says an undisclosed
material under pressure blew at Incertec's Fridley facility.

Clark, who is based out of Incertec's Kansas facility, says no one was
seriously injured but that three people who were nearest the incident
were taken to the hospital for evaluations.

Authorities say two chemicals were improperly mixed causing the
explosion. They do know what those chemicals were at this time.

Hazmat crews were dispatched to Wolf Laurel after the driver of a Fed-Ex
truck flipped on I-26 and spilled over 100 gallons of diesel fuel along
the roadway.

According to NC Highway State Trooper, Aubrey Hollar, Steven Glenn
Lewis, 40, of Kingsport, TN was traveling westbound on Interstate 26 in
a double tractor trailer Fed-Ex truck, when he lost control of his
vehicle just after 6 a.m. on Tuesday, May 3 and flipped the truck over a
guardrail.

=93It is possible that he fell asleep, but the cause (of the accident)
is still under investigation,=94 said Hollar.

Jeff Willis, Emergency Management director, said that the truck, which
was carrying mixed hazardous materials, including various corrosives,
also spilled over 100 gallons of diesel fuel on to the roadside, when
the gas tank dislodged from the truck at the time of the incident.

The NC Hazardous Materials Regional Response Team responded to the
accident just after 8 a.m. and determined that there was no immediate
danger on the scene.

Cedar Rapids authorities say hot ashes from a charcoal chimney starter
likely caused a house fire in Cedar Rapids on Sunday.

Emergency personnel responded to 1708 23rd Street NW on Sunday around
7:15 p.m. for reports of heavy black smoke coming from a garage. A fire
extinguisher hanging on the wall where the fire started exploded during
the fire, spreading dry chemical throughout the garage and possibly
suppressing the flames.

Investigators say the damage was confined to the wall of the garage. The
vehicles in the garage may have sustained minor smoke damage. There were
no injuries.

Cedar Rapids Fire Department authorities urge residents that grilling
materials should be completely cooled before storage and shouldn=92t be
placed next to combustible materials.

An evacuation was ruled out after firefighters got a smoky industrial
blaze under control in Oldcastle Sunday.

Firefighters, OPP and paramedics converged around 1: 30 p.m. on CBi
Custom Coatings for Aluminum and Steel on Fasan Drive. Tecumseh fire
Chief Doug Pitre said there was no need for an evacuation after
firefighters quickly dealt with a chemical blaze inside.

"The product was extinguished quite quickly," Pitre said. He said the
product was a type of nickel-based sealant into which metallic parts are
dipped for oxidization. A sign in front of the shop advertises anodizing
and black oxide services.

Though the fire was taken down quickly, Pitre said the main danger was
to firefighters exposed to the chemical. "If you get it on your skin it
would continue to burn for 48 hours," he said.

Firefighters washed down their equipment after coming into contact with
the sealant, he said. He said a small amount of product was spilled and
would be dealt with by Environment Canada.

VADODARA: Traffic on Ahmedabad-Vadodara expressway was affected after a
tanker carrying an inflammable chemical overturned on the highway in the
early hours of Monday. Traffic had to be diverted to the national
highway eight (NH-8) in the wake of the incident.

The tanker had overturned on the expressway around 2.30 am disrupting
traffic there. It is believed that a snag developed in the front wheel
of the tanker while it was moving on the Ahmedabad-Vadodara lane of the
highway. The driver lost control and the tanker overturned.

Fearing that the chemical in the tanker was an organic solvent that
could catch fire, the Vadodara fire brigade was called around 3.30 am.
While fire tender was kept at the spot, attempts to put the tanker back
on its wheels and remove it from the roads were started.

The wind was blowing from the north when the accident occurred and so
the chemical didn=92t blow over the town but rather south towards the
beach and over the ocean.

According to police, it is uncertain how much damage the leak caused; a
considerable amount of fish was being stored inside the plant.
