Excuse me, but I was raised by a single working mother who taught me about safety every day. Both my parents taught me that I was personally responsible for my actions & my safety. My parents married in college & grew in different directions between their 20s & their 30s. Risk assessment wouldn't have fixed that. However, the fact that no one is as concerned for my safety as I am, does not excuse any institution from providing appropriate safety systems. In my opinion, a machine shop should have a monitor whenever it is open for use. Lathes are not the only power tools available (saws, drills, sanders,etc.). In case of emergency, someone needs to be there to hit the emergency shutoff, call for help, apply pressure, etc. Beth Beth Shepard / Technical Compliance Specialist Regulatory Compliance 6000 N. Grandma probably raised Mom in a one parent home where she was out to work most of the time. So Mom wasn't too savvy about safety for starters and she had to be out working, too. If either Grandma or Mom had understood risk assessment, they wouldn't have been single parents. So a significant portion of students are clueless. And clueless is combined with the invincibility syndrome, a typical mental aberration often accompanied by periods of acute stupidity which is seen even in kids who have been raised by two safety conscious parents. Prepare to spoon-feed safety to them, Ernie.
