Crittenden Middle School blew up under their feet. A ninth man is recovering from a related accident in which an ambulance responding to the scene of the explosion slammed into the driver's side door of his car. Shortly before 7 a.m. Sunday, Newport News firefighters and police responded to a report of an explosion at Crittenden, which is located at 6158 Jefferson Ave. When medics arrived, they found eight men with varying degrees of injuries suffered during the explosion. A fire crew that was first on the scene immediately began treating the wounded, said Battalion Chief Steve Pincus with the Newport News Fire Department. At 7:16 a.m., a second alarm was called "because of the explosion, and for mass casualties," Pincus said. "There was a small amount of fire in the roof area when they first arrived, but their most important task is life safety, so a second alarm was called and subsequent apparatus and firefighters began attacking the fire." ... An Ambulance Victoria spokeswoman said paramedics originally believed up to 16 workers at a business on Mountain Highway, Bayswater had been affected by the spill at a next-door factory. She said a woman at the business required medical attention for an unrelated matter after initial reports that fumes had been leaking from the neighbouring factory where fire fighters were working to contain hazardous chemicals. The factory had been broken into overnight by would-be arsonists who attempted to set alight vats of chemicals, believed to be types of glue, which were spread across the floor, a Victoria Police spokeswoman said. === Chemical truck overturns, causing leak http://www.timesoftheinternet.com/133608.html KANSAS CITY, Mo., Nov. 30 (UPI) -- Hydrochloric acid is leaking from a semi truck that overturned on a bridge in Kansas City, Mo., on Monday morning, authorities said. Kansas City Fire Battalion Chief Joe Vitale told The Kansas City (Mo.) Star that traffic to the Paseo Bridge was closed off following the rush-hour accident, which prompted a chemical leak and a plume of fumes coming from the crash scene. Vitale said it remains unclear how much of the nearly 45,000 pounds of hydrochloric acid being carried in the truck had leaked so far. The fire official said the semi truck driver was rescued from the vehicle and sent to the hospital with unspecified injuries. There was no immediate word on the cause of the accident. While the immediate area was evacuated following the crash, firefighters were able to stop a larger leak from the truck, Vitale said. The Star reported that crews are working to plug the remaining rupture point, while the air quality east of the site is being examined by emergency crews. An individual can experience pulmonary edema, as well as irritation and inflammation to the eye, nose and respiratory tract as a result of exposure to hydrochloric acid, according to the Environmental Protection Agency. === Australia http://www.smh.com.au/national/one-dead-six-in-hospital-after-being-expose d-to-unknown-chemical-20091201-k1kk.html One dead, six in hospital after being exposed to unknown chemical GEORGINA ROBINSON December 1, 2009 - 11:52AM A woman has died and six people, including four paramedics, are being treated in hospital after being exposed to an unknown chemical on a farm south-west of Sydney, the NSW Ambulance Service says. Four paramedics were called to a farmhouse in Byron Road, Leppington, just before 3am today after a report that a 69-year-old woman was in cardiac arrest, police and the NSW Ambulance Service said. The woman's 38-year-old son was performing CPR on his mother when paramedics arrived but she died a short time later. It is not known whether the woman's death was a direct result of exposure to an unknown chemical, a NSW Ambulance spokesman said. There were fumes inside the farmhouse, a NSW Fire Brigades spokesman said. A short time later the 38-year-old and his 76-year-old father became ill and all four paramedics reported headaches and nausea. ===
