There is no official, legally required color coding/scheme on compressed ga s cylinders. While one expects consistency within the product line of a pa rticular gas vendor, there can be vendor-to-vendor variation, customer owne d cylinders of different colors and old cylinders with previous color schem es still in use in the field... Within the compressed gas industry, we STRESS that you cannot rely on the c olor of the cylinder to determine its contents. While you may, in general, be correct that, for example, Oxygen is Green, Breathing air is yellow, and Nitrous oxide is Blue, the *official* determinant is the label, NOT the co lor. If you think the color and the label don't match, immediately *STOP* a nd call someone for clarification!!! Until the CGA (Compressed Gas Assoc.) -or another similar governing/rule making body- comes up with a manditory c olor scheme, which is not expected any time soon, please rely on the label, NOT the color, but ASK FIRST if you are unsure.
