LOS ANGELES
UCLA researcher injured in lab fire dies
A UCLA research assistant seriously burned in a lab fire last month died fr
om her injuries Jan. 16, according to a school spokesman.
The 22-year-old woman, who was not identified, died Friday at Grossman Burn
Center in Sherman Oaks, where she was transferred after first being treate
d at UCLA Medical Center, said spokesman Phil Hampton.
The accident occurred in the school's molecular sciences building, after ch
emicals caused a flash fire.
The woman suffered second- and third-degree burns over her upper body, offi
cials said.
The fire is under investigation by UCLA's Environmental Health Science depa
rtment, Hampton said.

Good Morning:
On December 29th UCLA experienced a lab fire that resulted in injuries to a
lab employee. The lab employee was working with T-butyl lithium dissolve
d in a solvent. The transfer of the prophetic and solvent was being conduc
ted via a syringe. Unfortunately the plunger of the syringe was accidental
ly pulled all the way out and the material was exposed to atmosphere. This
resulted in flash fire in and around a fume hood. Unfortunately the emplo
yee was not wearing all of the appropriate PPE. She sustained 3rd degree b
urns over 40% of her body.
On Friday January 16th I was notified by UCPD that the patient had died of
her injuries. We continue to work on the investigation. SFM, Cal OSHA, LA
FD Arson, UCPD, UCLA EH&S, LAPD and the Coroner's office are working with u
s. Once this is complete I will share our findings.
