Chemicals with high vapor pressures (e.g., methylene chloride, fluorocarbons) don't adhere to activated charcoal very well so air-purifying respirators are not advisable for them. NIOSH generally kicks you up to air-supplying respirators for them. Peter Zavon is right, according to 29 CFR 1910.134, cartridge replacement must be guided by a changeout schedule. Most respirator manufacturers can provide them on discs or at their Web sites. If that doesn't work, try OSHA at: http://osha.gov/SLTC/etools/respiratory/index.html .
