NFPA also has a standard for laboratories, NFPA 45, Standard on
Fire Protection for Laboratories Using Chemicals, 2004 Edition, which

This is a rather interesting question. It is not addressed directly in
the Life Safety Code.
The Life Safety Code has provisions for dead end corridors that are
reasonably applied to aisles for cubical spaces. The maximum dead end in
the LSC is typically 20 ft in unsprinklered and 50 ft in sprinklered
occupancies(See Table A.7.6). A laboratory table could have the dead
end limits applied, but this is not typically done for tables, bookcases
and other furniture fixed or unfixed in a room.
Common path of travel is the other consideration and is listed in Table
A.7.6 as well. Common path of travel is typically 75 feet in
unsprinklered and 100 feet in sprinklered occupancies. Common path of
travel is simply the path that must be traveled before two separate and
distinct paths of travel to two exits (or doors to a corridor outside
the lab room in this case) is available. Common path of travel is
measured around furniture, columns and other objects in a room and most
certainly be met for a lab- the minimum limit of 75 feet is one that I
think is almost always met around lab tables, so its application would
not likely result in a reconfiguration of the lab tables.
In my mind, the use of lab counters and tables in a room in relation to
the work being done would naturally dictate shorter peninsulas than
both common path and dead end provisions would require.

Our facilities manager for our College of Medicine labs asked me this
question, which I thought DCHAS-L might have some helpful input on:
Does anyone know of a "regulation" which would require limiting the
length of a lab peninsula (meaning the lab benches create only one
means of egress from the enclosed area) to require an island station
above that length? While such a rule makes sense, I am unable to find
any supporting information. Thanks for your assistance.

I may be wrong, but I believe this is dictated by the fire codes, and
is dependent on a few things such as sprinkler systems and "business"
class. I found what I believe to be the applicable code under a
title called "Dead End" in the portion of the Seattle Fire Code that
deals with Egress. This was just a quick look on my part, but I
would check your local fire code.

I am not aware of any code requirements that would limit the length
of a lab
peninsula. Overall, for labs, the code does limit the length of travel
distance to an exit or exit-access door to 75 feet .
