Duties: Under the direction of the Manager of Industrial Hygiene, provide support to the University's environmental, health & safety programs to ensure compliance with existing governmental regulations and national guidelines. Inspect research, teaching and maintenance facilities for compliance with regulations and guidelines pertaining to the use, handling, and disposal of hazardous materials. Conduct sampling as required. Provide written recommendations to improve processes, experimental design, procedures and equipment to minimize the hazard potential. Develop and present various safety training programs for faculty, staff and students Oversee the University's lead, formaldehyde and anesthetic gas exposure control programs. Manage the University's pesticide safety program including certifications and training of university faculty & staff that apply pesticides. Inspect areas to determine the presence of hazardous materials (asbestos, lead, others). Provide reports. Write specifications for work to be completed by contactors. Plan, schedule, and coordinate asbestos abatement activities. Inspect and monitor asbestos abatement jobs according to Philadelphia asbestos control regulations. Provide supervision of a health & safety technician that will provide assistance for asbestos activities. Conduct indoor air quality, mold and flood response investigations. Provide remediation coordination. Investigate accidents in regards to safety issues and develop corrective action plans. Provide support to EHRS emergency response team. Respond (on call) to hazardous materials incidents on a rotating basis. Qualifications: The position requires a BS degree in science or related field with 3-5 years of safety related experience preferably in a research facility or equivalent combination of education and experience. Preference will be given to individuals with CIH or CSP certification and EPA asbestos certifications. The individual must have excellent verbal, written and interpersonal skills. Must be familiar with Microsoft Office. Must be able to move about freely and carry up to 50 pounds; must be able to wear respiratory protection, including SCBA's. Valid driver's license.
