Subject: AHF Lecture Bottle Explosion Redux

I have some questions about last month's AHF lecture bottle explosion.

The Air Products Safety Bulletin (July 12, 2000) at this link

recommends venting excess pressure to an acceptable scrubber or disposal 
system.  It is HF they are referring to of course (but the majority of 
the gas would be H2).

I asked the folks at Air Products about an acceptable scrubbing media.  
They recommended a solid media impregnated with KOH.   They don't sell 
the material but pointed me to a company called Purafil.  Here is

Purafil recommends a product called Puracarb media.  This is an 
activated carbon and activated alumina mixture.  The activated carbon is 
impregnated with KOH.  It is sold as a bulk material as opposed to being 
packaged in a cartridge or cannister.  Does anyone have experience with 
this media?  I'd be interested in any feedback you may have including 
the set up (e.g., plumbing , etc.) used to vent the gas through the sorbent.

Since the initial email came out in mid July/05 has anyone vented any 
AHF cylinders? Can you provide details? How did you scrub the gas? 

One final question (somewhat academic) - is Iron (II) fluoride or Iron 
(III) fluoride produced from the reaction of HF with the iron in the 
cylinder wall?
