Joe, I am a contributing author to the Online Chemistry Course (OLCC), "Chemical Safety: Protecting Ourselves and Our Environment", scheduled to begin in the Fall of 2004. The ACS Division of Chemical Health and Safety (CHAS) and ACS Division of Chemical Education (CHED) are sponsoring an online 3 credit intercollegiate course for students who have taken General Chemistry and Organic Chemistry. The course will be offered during the Fall 2004 semester (or term). No fee is assessed by the sponsors. The course will be offered at each of the participating schools with local classes and online activities. Instructors at each of the participating schools will be actively involved as will their students. Assignments, examinations, and grading will be handled by each participating school. Additional informaton on this course, the presenters, and the course syllabus is available at http://science.widener.edu/svb/olcc_safety/ (ACCESSED MARCH 2004) Feel free to contact me if you should have any questions. We have a set of guidelines in place, and go over them with the students, but have not formalized the training into a course with credit. Some specifics that I'm considering are -being able to get data from an MSDS -safety exits -chemical handling -reading our hazard system (we use a system built on the NFPA diamond that works for our freshmen and sophomores) -lab protection - goggles. clothing, etc -lab behavior -??????? What other topics should/could be covered? Our system of chemical labeling is basic, but I think it works. If someone needs a system or would like to pick mine apart - let me know and I'll send you the information.
