PICKENS COUNTY, Ga. ‰?? Thousands of gallons of tar and diesel and thousands of pounds of sand filled a Pickens County road on Wednesday morning.
Cherokee County hazardous materials teams were called out to assist with the spill in front of the historic Tate House on Hwy. 53.
When they arrived, a tanker-trailer had flipped and started spilling the hot tar it was carrying, as well as the diesel in its tank.
Pickens County Fire and Rescue crews were able to pull the driver out of the tanker before hazmat teams got there.
Crews were able to quickly stop the diesel leak before it contaminated anything other than the road.
The tar was flowing into a roadside culvert and a nearby pasture. By the time crews were able to stop it, officials estimate between 3,000 and 5,000 gallons of tar had spilled out. It‰??s unclear what damage was done to the culvert and pasture.

The Michigan Department of Environment, Great Lakes, and Energy (EGLE) served Tribar Manufacturing ‰?? the Wixom company responsible for a chemical release that threatens the Huron River system ‰?? with multiple violation notices.
The violations included not immediately notifying EGLE after discovering the discharge, and sending an unauthorized discharge of pollutants to the wastewater treatment facility.
EGLE says due to the seriousness of the violations, it has initiated accelerated enforcement, which will initiate an administrative consent order process and the agency will seek full cost recovery from Tribar.
But violations and fines are not enough, according to environmental groups and elected leaders who gathered at Heavner Canoe Rental in Milford. The rental company said it has lost about 70% of its business due to the state telling people not to have contact with water in the Huron River between North Wixom Road in Oakland County and Kensington Road in Livingston County.

LAKE CLEAR ‰?? The town of Harrietstown is suing a slew of chemical companies ‰?? including 3M and DuPont ‰?? to recuperate the costs of a chemical Superfund cleanup at the town-owned Adirondack Regional Airport in Lake Clear, which the state is requiring the town pay for.
The state Department of Environmental Conservation has found potentially cancer-causing chemicals called PFAS in groundwater at the airport, the result of decades of federally-mandated testings with firefighting foams at the airstrip.
The DEC tries to find ‰??responsible parties‰?? to pay for Superfund site cleanups before committing state funds to such a project, and it has identified the town as a responsible party. But the cost of studying and remediating this contamination carries a hefty price tag for the town and its taxpayers. So the town has lawyered up, contracting with Long Island attorney Nick Rigano, and has filed a lawsuit against the multinational corporations that sold them the hazardous chemicals as it prepares to clean up the site under state supervision.

According to New Jersey officials, the foul smell has been reported across several counties before being identified on Wednesday.
A tanker truck at a truck stop was releasing a chemical that caused the stench around Paulsboro, Gloucester County, officials said.
Gloucester County Emergency Management issued a shelter-in-place around 11:30 p.m. on Wednesday for East Greenwich, Paulsboro, Gibbstown and areas across the Delaware River after the fumes worsened. The issue was lifted approximately two hours later.
"It's doing exactly what it should do. When the temperature rises to a certain level, the vessel itself will actually expel fumes. So it's built to do that," East Greenwich Township Police Chief Matthew Brenner said on Wednesday. "There's no leak per se."

EAST GREENWICH, NJ ‰?? A foul odor raised concern in communities across Gloucester County today, prompting a hazardous material team (Hazmat) response to a truck stop on Berkeley Road in East Greenwich.
According to county officials, at 3:07 p.m. Gloucester County 9-1-1 Communications began receiving calls from hundreds of residents complaining of a natural gas odor throughout Gloucester County.
‰??Police and Fire throughout numerous municipalities responded with the same complaint. Gloucester County 9-1-1 Communications then received a 9-1-1 call from the Travel Center Truck Stop on Berkley Road in East Greenwich Township advising that there was a gas leak coming from a tractor-trailer parked in the lot,‰?? Gloucester County officials reported Wednesday evening. ‰??Upon Police and Fire Department‰??s arrival, it was confirmed that a trailer is venting off large amounts of gas from the parked trailer. The chemical being released is Lubrozol (Zinc Alkyldithiophosphate) that may cause eye/skin irritation when you come in contact with it.‰??
Lubrozol is typically used as a fuel additive. Police and responders contained the leak and are now monitoring the air quality.

DEEPWATER HORIZON OIL SPILL RESIDUE STILL PRESENT 10 YEARS LATER

races of weathered crude oil from the Deepwater Horizon oil spill were still present in Louisiana's shoreline environments a decade after the disaster, according to a new study.
The oil rig in the Gulf of Mexico exploded and sank 40 miles off the coast of Louisiana in 2010. Eleven people were killed and over the next 87 days, 4 million barrels of oil leaked from the Deepwater Horizon. It was the largest spill in the history of marine oil drilling operations, according to the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency.
Scientists have been studying the spill ever since. One group of researchers tracked crude oil residue from the Deepwater Horizon for 10 years. In a paper published Tuesday in the journal Frontiers in Marine Science, the team describes the chemical components and changes - or weathering - of the oil in the environment.

12:37 p.m. UPDATE: In a new campus alert, the university reports "The emergency situation on the 3rd floor of Material Science Building has ended. It is safe to resume normal activities."
In a statement to WAAY 31, a UAH spokesperson said the buildings were evacuated "due to a chemical spill in a lab. The spill was contained to a single room and no injuries were reported. The UAH Office of Environmental Health and Safety and Huntsville Fire & Rescue's Hazardous Materials Team responded to the incident."
11:42 a.m. UPDATE: In a campus alert, the University of Alabama in Huntsville reports "With the exception of the 3rd floor of (the Material Science Building) the emergency situation at UAH has ended and it is safe to return."

The University of Alabama in Huntsville has told people to evacuate two buildings on campus due to a chemical release.
One is the Material Science Building. The other is the Optics Building.
Campus alerts tell people to move at least 500 feet from the buildings and to avoid the area until further notice.

WIXOM COMPANY ISSUED VIOLATIONS OVER HURON RIVER CHEMICAL SPILL

WIXOM, Mich. (FOX 2) - The Michigan Department of Environment, Great Lakes, and Energy (EGLE) issued violations Tuesday to a company responsible for the Huron River chemical spill.
Related: Water testing detects no hexavalent chromium in Huron River
According to the state, Tribar Manufacturing in Wixom released a plating solution containing hexavalent chromium the weekend of July 29.
Tribar was cited for:
Failing to immediately notify EGLE immediately after discovering the discharge as required under the law and their industrial user discharge permit.
Sending an unauthorized discharge of pollutants to the wastewater treatment facility that resulted in interference to the treatment process, violating pretreatment rules in the Michigan Natural Resources and Environmental Protection Act (NREPA).
Failure to maintain a properly updated Pollution Incident Prevention Plan (PIPP) and failing to certify compliance with NREPA rules regarding spillage of oil and polluting materials.
EGLE said it was notified last week about several thousands of gallons of a liquid with 5% hexavalent chromium that had been released into the water.

Washington ‰?? The Chemical Safety Board says it will resume providing updates on incident investigations to ‰??provide important initial information‰?? on agency developments.
Board member and interim executive Stephen Owens made the announcement during a CSB business meeting July 29. The agency had discontinued the practice in recent years.
The remark came as Owens and fellow board member Sylvia Johnson, who now comprise CSB leadership after Katherine Lemos stepped down as chair and CEO on July 22, indicated a desire for CSB to be more transparent. Owens acknowledged the agency‰??s investigative backlog while highlighting the work of an investigative team that has navigated staff turnover.
After discussion of a final agency report on an April 2017 incident at a St. Louis box company that killed four workers ‰?? CSB‰??s first report in 10 months ‰?? Owens recognized the investigator in charge, a recent agency addition, for efficiently completing the work of previous investigators who had left CSB.
‰??The turnover that CSB has experienced over the years, many of our reports are like that, where the investigations were conducted by investigators who are no longer with the agency,‰?? Owens said. ‰??And new people ‰?| who have come in and have done the work in terms of picking up the reports, reviewing the file, and then putting together a really solid and very effective report.‰??
