FARMVILLE, Va. (WRIC) ' Officials are currently investigating a chlorine gas leak at the Farmville Wastewater Treatment Plant.

According to authorities, units from Farmville Fire Department are on scene and, as of 10:20 p.m., Hazmat Responders from the Virginia Department of Emergency Management were en route.

At this time, officials said the extent of the leak and the danger it poses are unknown. However, nearby residents have been alerted and instructed to stay indoors as a precaution.

The toxicity of chlorine gas depends on the dose and duration of exposure, but the CDC provides some information on the chemical here.

PITTSFIELD, N.H. '
Students at Pittsfield Middle High School were sent home Tuesday after a chemical spill in a science lab.

No injuries were reported after a teacher working in a storage room in a biology lab broke a bottle with an unknown chemical inside. About 45 students and staff members were in the building at the time, and all were safely evacuated.

Fire Chief Peter Pszonowsky said that even though no one was hurt, every precaution was taken because of the nature of the spill.

"So, with any sort of chemical, you can't tell what it is for reaction, so it's better safe than sorry," he said.

Several fire crews and a state hazmat team were set up in the parking lot of the school, preparing to enter the building and clean up the spill. Officials said they expected the cleanup to take about two hours, and the school should be back open Wednesday.

BEIJING (AP) ' A gas explosion after a partial building collapse in the northern Chinese port city of Tianjin on Tuesday morning left three people missing and 11 injured.

The event remains under investigation, but it appears to point to the deterioration of infrastructure following more than three decades of breakneck economic growth.

That development has vastly boosted living standards while often skirting safety and environmental regulation.

Three floors of the six-story building collapsed. The official Xinhua News Agency reported the subsequent explosion occurred around 7:15 a.m.

WESTBOUND LANES OF I-64 IN CHARLESTON TO REMAIN CLOSED AFTER ACETONE DISSOLVES ROAD

Drivers are being urged to continue avoiding the Interstate 64/77 split, due to a closure of both westbound lanes near the Washington Street exit after a chemical spill early Tuesday morning.

The West Virginia Department of Transportation, Division of Highways said late Tuesday evening that the westbound lanes will remain closed throughout the night and a detour remains in place.

The lanes were closed after a tractor trailer overturned about 4:45 a.m., spilling acetone, a solvent typically used to break down other materials. Charleston Fire Chief Shawn Wanner said the material is highly flammable.

Emergency crews said that as of Tuesday evening, most of the hazardous material had been cleaned up and a towing service will be towing the tractor trailer away from the area.

However, the acetone based material has dissolved the asphalt down several inches, Charleston Emergency Management Director Chad Jones said.

State engineers will assess the damage when the truck is removed, but the road may not open until sometime Wednesday, depending on the damage found by the engineers.

FLINT, MI -- State environmental officials say they have pinpointed a breach that caused a spill of volatile and semi-volatile organic compounds into the Flint River last month and say they have also observed a stubborn whitish discharge at an outfall to the river.

Jill A. Greenberg, a spokesperson for the Michigan Department of Environment, Great Lakes, and Energy, said samples of the light-colored discharge have been taken at a manhole upstream of the outfall, which continues to be monitored daily on the site.

The outfall had been identified previously as the general location of the spill, which was first noticed by a fisherman on June 15. Agencies from the city, Genesee County, the state and the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency all responded to the spill, which snaked its way from the area of Lockhart Chemical Co. in Flint to the Montrose area before it was contained and collected with skimmer boats and absorbent booms.

Fourteen children were hospitalized with breathing problems after being exposed to higher-than-normal levels of chlorine during summer camp at Drew University Monday, July 18, officials said.

The juveniles, participating in a soccer program for children ages 10 to 17, reported shortness of breath, difficulty speaking between breaths, nausea and general airway issues while in a pool at the Madison university around 12:20 p.m., Morris County officials said.

A small amount of chlorine had accidentally been released into the pool. Tests detected normal levels of chlorine and all systems were working as normal.

The 14 individuals received medical attention on the scene and were later transported to Morristown Medical Center for observations. All transports occurred within 60 minutes and the scene was cleared within 90 minutes.

Recent testing shows the groundwater at Miami Dade College's North Campus is contaminated with firefighting chemicals that pose health risks, Florida regulators say.

That water is treated and circulated throughout parts of Miami-Dade County. Despite the test results, the county says its tap water is safe to drink.

"The county's Water and Sewer Department treats the drinking water, and it meets [U.S. Environmental Protection Agency] standards," says Tere Florin, a spokesperson for the Miami-Dade Department of Regulatory and Economic Resources.

The contamination came from aqueous film-forming foam used by the Miami Dade College Fire Academy at 3180 NW 119th St., according to the Florida Department of Environmental Protection (DEP). Aqueous film-forming foams, or AFFFs, rapidly extinguish fuel fires, but they contain polyfluoroalkyl substances, or PFAS, which are considered "forever chemicals."
