A large diesel fuel spill prompted multiple agencies to respond to an Annapolis waterfront park on Monday.
The Maryland Department of the Environment (MDE) says about 200 gallons of 'red dyed # 2 fuel oil' spilled into the water Sunday evening, July 10, around 5 p.m. at Acton Cove Waterfront Park. on Spa Creek.
When they arrived MDE deployed 600 feet of sorbent sweep to contain the spill. The Annapolis Fire Department also responded. The Coast Guard accessed the Oil Pollution Liability Trust Fund and a contractor came in around midnight Monday morning for recovery and cleanup operations. Once the spill was contained with booms, it was vacuumed into an awaiting environmental services truck.
MDE was onsite Monday morning with the Coast Guard and the contractor. At that time, no source of the spill had been identified. The booms were still in place. The smell of diesel fuel remained very strong and the Annapolis Fire Department advised boaters and swimmers to continue to avoid the area.

MOUNT PLEASANT, S.C. (WCBD) ' Governor Henry McMaster announced a multimillion-dollar effort to remove hundreds of thousands of gallons of hazardous materials from the USS Yorktown.
The warship was donated to the state of South Carolina by the U.S. Navy in 1975 to become a museum at Patriots Point in the Charleston harbor. That goal was achieved, but when the ship was donated, toxic waste was left in the tanks of the ship.
Now nearly 50 years later, the tanks will be cleared of all hazardous chemicals.
On Monday, Governor Henry McMaster issued Executive Order 2022-20, which directs the South Carolina Office of Resilience to begin the process of removing hundreds of thousands of gallons of toxic pollutants from the USS Yorktown by commissioning an updated cost study for the project.
'As the outer hull of the USS Yorktown continues to corrode, the chance of an environmental disaster only increases with each passing year,' said Governor Henry McMaster. 'This executive order protects Charleston Harbor and the entire Lowcountry from these hazardous materials leaking out of the USS Yorktown and into the harbor.'

(The Hill) ' A new Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) study revealed a common herbicide chemical linked to cancer was detected in the majority of urine samples the public health agency reviewed.
The CDC's National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey, a program designed to assess the nutritional health of American adults and children, released data last month showing that more than 80 percent of urine samples tested by the health agency were at or above the detection limit for glyphosate, which is widely considered to be a carcinogenic chemical and is the main ingredient in the weedkiller product Roundup.
About 2,310 urine samples were collected from people aged 6-years-old and older in 2013 and 2014, with about a third of the samples coming from children. The CDC said it conducted the study to get a clearer picture of how prevalent glyphosate is among the general population.
