SACRAMENTO (CBS13) ' A boat fire in the Sacramento River has turned into a hazmat situation beneath the I-80 bridge late Tuesday afternoon.
The boat, which the Sacramento Fire Department said is privately owned, was docked along the side of the river when it caught fire, putting up heavy smoke in the area. The boat, named the All-American, is likely to sink and the California Department of Fish and Wildlife has been made aware, officials said.
The fire department said a hazmat crew was called to the scene as fuel from the boat was leaking into the water.

SIOUX CITY -- Federal contractors have begun cleaning up tons of hazardous leaded glass illegally stored in South Sioux City and in rural Akron, Iowa, by a now-defunct recycling business owned by a former Sioux City councilman.
On Tuesday, workers with an excavator and skid loader continued to remove an estimated 3.38 million pounds of crushed glass and other waste from 2301 G St., where the waste had been stored outdoors in totes for at least five years. Removal began June 13.
Work at the Akron site also has begun.
The cleanup projects, which are being overseen by the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency, are being done through the federal Superfund program, which enables the agency to clean up contaminated sites. According to EPA documents, cleanup of the South Sioux City site is estimated at nearly $1.4 million.
Cleanup of 8.4 million pounds of glass stored in cardboard boxes packed to the rafters inside a 9,000-square-foot building at an Akron farm is estimated to cost more than $1.9 million, EPA documents show.

OTHO ' A propane-fueled fire that produced flames visible from U.S. Highway 169 destroyed a machine at the NEW Cooperative facility on 250th Street west of Otho Tuesday evening.
Damage was limited to that machine, and no one was hurt.
The fire was extinguished after firefighters from the regional hazardous materials team at the Fort Dodge Fire Department closed a valve that was open and allowing propane to feed the flames.
The fire was reported at about 6 p.m.
The burning machine was right next to a roughly 18,000-gallon propane tank. Firefighters initially concentrated on keeping that tank from igniting.

Just after 2 p.m. Monday afternoon, the Port Chester Fire Department responded to the Costco on Westchester Ave. on a report of smoke in the structure. The first units to arrive quickly determined it was not smoke from a fire at the scene, but that there was a large freon leak on the 2nd floor.

Firefighters from Mamaroneck, Rye Brook , Purchase, Town of Mamaroneck, Village of Mamaroneck, West Harrison, Valhalla and Westchester County hazmat teams are supporting Port Chester FD at the scene of the chemical leak. Con Edison teams also responded to the call.

An Albuquerque research laboratory was fined $6,200 by the U.S. Department of Agriculture in connection with the deaths of two monkeys.
Lovelace Biomedical, formerly Lovelace Respiratory Research Institute, was found to have violated the Animal Welfare Act in the deaths of two macaques in 2019, according to a USDA citation and notification of penalty issued last month.
One of the monkeys died during a face-mask inhalation procedure after it wiggled its arms out of restraints and got entangled in the equipment, according to the citation.
The other macaque was found dead in its enclosure with five other monkeys. The primate was dehydrated, had little to no visceral fat and an overall thin body composition. After the death, the facility raised potential compatibility issues between the same group of monkeys, according to a USDA inspection report.

CHEMICAL LEAK LEADS TO MAJOR HAZMAT RESPONSE IN DORAL

DORAL ' Several Miami-Dade Fire Rescue crews were called out Monday afternoon to the scene a major hazmat situation in Doral.
The fire department received a call at 1 p.m. of an unknown chemical leaking from a compressed gas tank connected to a truck.
It turned out it was such a hazardous material that it required the highest level alert and crews in full hazmat gear.
Fire rescue would only say it was some sort of product used in manufacturing.
The driver of truck and another person helping offload it began complaining of symptoms. Both were transported to a local hospital.
Four others were close enough to the substance to require decontamination.
Crews were able to identify and isolate the hazardous material, and the leak was contained inside the building.
"The building was evacuated as well as surrounding building," explained Division Chief Marc Shavers. "But we were able to identify with our meter reader that the chemical has not left the building, so it's not outside in the air, it's staying within the building."

GRAND TRAVERSE COUNTY, Mich., (WPBN/WGTU) -- An early morning crash Saturday between a car and tractor resulted in a fertilizer chemical spill across a highly traveled road on Old Mission Peninsula in Grand Traverse County.
Center Road was closed at the intersection of Island View Road until 3 p.m. Saturday.
Environmental crews were called in to help neutralize the chemicals.
Peninsula Township Fire Chief Fred Gilstorff said the crash happened around 5:45 a.m.
The tractor was pulling a sprayer filled with fertilizer for crops.
"The sprayer holds about 300 gallons of water and chemicals for spraying,' Gilstorff said. 'So, nearly all of it was spilled, but like I said we had it contained to a certain spot, so now they're just vacuuming off the residual water and will clean the layer of soil around it."

FLINT, Michigan (WNEM) ' Officials say that cleanup efforts continue following an oil spill in the Flint River.
The leak was first reported Wednesday. State investigators confirmed Friday that the source of the Flint River oil spill came from the Lockhart Chemical Company.
So far, recovery is going well, according to Genesee County Sheriff Chris Swanson. Swanson said if crews continue working as they are, response teams could scale back operations as soon as Sunday.
A county wide no contact order with the river remains in place. Residents should not fish, boat or swim in the Flint River from Stepping Stone Falls to the Genesee County Line.
Genesee County Board Chairman Domonique Clemons said he is grateful for the joint effort.

BLACK JACK, Mo. (AP) ' Two men were charged with murder in a house explosion near St. Louis that authorities say killed four people who were assembling fireworks in a garage.
St. Louis County prosecutors say 37-year-old Terrell Cooks and 43-year-old Seneca Mahan made fireworks and directed younger people on how to load the canisters and attach a fuse for lighting. They would then sell the fireworks to others. Neither Cooks nor Mahan had a license to make or sell fireworks.
Cooks and Mahan are each with three counts of second-degree murder and several other charges in Friday's explosion near the town of Black Jack. They were charged before a fourth victim died Saturday.

Emergency authorities in China's two metropolises, Beijing and Shanghai, decided to carry out citywide inspections of hazardous chemical companies from Sunday to identify potential risks, after a fire caused by a dangerous chemical explosion in Shanghai.
The fire broke out Saturday morning at an ethylene glycol plant area operated by Sinopec Shanghai Petrochemical Company, a subsidiary of China's largest state-owned petrochemical enterprise Sinopec, killing one person and injuring another slightly.
There was a loud explosion followed by a pungent smell, before the whole plant was engulfed in black smoke, local media quoted residents nearby as saying.
Sinopec Shanghai Petrochemical Company on Sunday expressed deep condolences to the victims of the fire and expressed deep sympathy to the injured and the families of the victims, as cleanup work is underway.
The inspections mainly involve dangerous chemical manufacturers, oil depots, gas stations in key areas, chemical companies, pharmaceutical manufacturers and other operators with storage facilities, Beijing emergency authorities said in a statement.
