MADIKERI: Panic spread across Siddapura and Virajpet in Kodagu on Tuesday morning as many residents developed a sudden cough and burning sensation in the eyes. Several rushed to the hospital to get treated even as social media was filled with caution messages asking locals to wear masks. The town roads were stained red and residents suspected a chemical spill from a truck as the cause. The situation turned bizarre after it was found that a chilli sauce leak had led to all the panic!
‰??We received panic calls after many residents developed symptoms of cough across Siddapura and Virajpet towns. Six students of a private college rushed to the hospital following the cough symptoms and they were treated,‰?? confirmed Dr Venkatesh, DHO.
Following the calls, health and family welfare department officials rushed to the spot. They noticed a red liquid spread across the road and it was found that a truck travelling to Kerala had caused the leak. The check post staff at Makutta (on the Kodagu-Kerala border) was alerted and the truck that caused the leak was stopped. It was after an inspection of the truck that the officials realised that the red liquid was chilli sauce extracted from Byadgi chilli.
Investigations revealed that the truck was loaded with over 20 barrels filled with Byadgi chilli sauce extracted at a factory in Davanagere. This was to be transported to Ernakulam and the truck driver took the route via Kodagu to reach Kerala.
‰??Near Nellihudikeri, the truck went off the road to give space to a private bus. It is suspected that this damaged a couple of barrels placed inside the truck and caused the leakage,‰?? confirmed Ravikumar, Madikeri Rural Police Station SI. After residents complained about the suspected chemical leak, the truck was stopped at Makutta checkpost.
‰??All the required vehicle and transport documents are intact. However, as public inconvenience was caused, the truck has been seized. A case of public nuisance has been registered and an FIR has been lodged,‰?? confirmed Ravikumar. Meanwhile, the health department has collected the sample of the sauce, which will be sent for testing at a lab in Mysuru.

China has announced moves to intensify its battle against new pollutants to improve environmental protection.
Generated in the production or use of hazardous chemicals such as pesticides, these new pollutants include persistent organic pollutants, endocrine disruptors, and antibiotics. Such pollution poses risks to the environment and human health but is not currently effectively treated in the country.
The State Council has recently released an action plan to strengthen the control of new pollutants. It vowed to improve the country's treatment capacity significantly by 2025.
Specifically, China will complete the risk screening of some major chemicals, dynamically release lists of new pollutants under control, and implement control measures, including bans and emission caps. Laws and systems on the risk management of hazardous chemicals will be gradually established and improved.
The official document listed measures in six areas, including system-building, research and monitoring, clean production and green manufacturing, and technological support.

There was a chemical spill at the former Federal Mogul plant north of Waldo Boulevard in Manitowoc late last week.
The spill occurred late Thursday night and persisted through about 7:00 Friday evening.
The Manitowoc Fire Department reports workers were moving some hydrochloric acid when some of the chemicals were spilled and got into a large quantity of paper.
A Haz-Mat team from Appleton was called in and a third-party firm assisted in cleanup, but some of the paper remained contaminated.
A wind shift and an increase in humidity Friday reactivated the plume of chemicals and an open door caused the plume to re-enter the building.
Personnel were evacuated for the second time, but crews were able to complete the cleanup. There were no injuries reported.

Gujarat: A major fire broke out in a pharma company at GIDC, creating havoc in Gandhinagar, Gujarat. According to the information received, ten firefighters were present at the spot. In this case, the Gandhinagar Fire Service said, "As per preliminary information, no staff was present on the company premises at the time of the incident, but it can be confirmed only after extinguishing the fire." Let us tell you all that earlier, at least six workers were injured in a major fire that broke out in a chemical factory at Dahej in the Bharuch district of Gujarat on Tuesday.
In this case, Superintendent of Police Leena Patil had said that the fire broke out in the unit of Bharat Chemicals. Six workers have been taken to a hospital in Bharuch city. On the other hand, district magistrate Tushar Sumera (Bharuch DM) said, "The fire has been extinguished. Only after the fire is completely brought under control will we be able to tell the actual number of the injured. The official said, "Due to chemicals, the fire fighting operation took more time. According to media reports, the fire broke out after an explosion in the boiler installed in the plant and spread rapidly.
How the accident happened - Chemicals and pesticides are prepared by India Chemical Company. There was a lot of chemical near the boiler. As a result, the fire increased, and the staff did not even get a chance to rescue. At the same time, it took ten vehicles of the fire brigade to douse the fire, and after about 3 hours of hard work, the fire was brought under control. During this time, the explosion of the boiler was so strong that its sound was heard far away. After this explosion, when the fire broke out in the chemical factory, the smoke rising in the sky was also seen from 15 km away. However, other nearby plants were also closed due to security reasons, and now the situation is under control.

SOLAR PANELS FACE RECYCLING CHALLENGE

The world‰??s photovoltaic capacity is growing at a record pace‰??and so too is the burden of waste from solar panels that have reached the end of their working lives. Many of these dead panels are dumped in landfills, even though they contain valuable elements such as silicon, silver, and copper. Researchers are now racing to develop chemical technologies that can help dismantle solar cells and strip away the valuable metals within. Others are reprocessing the cells‰?? silicon wafers so that they can be turned into fresh batches of solar-grade silicon. Several European projects aim to make these kinds of processes commercially viable in the next few years. Recovering more of these materials at high purity could make recycling a more economically attractive option than consigning this waste to an indecent burial.
