SPARTA, Ky. (WKRC) - An intense fire in a tractor-trailer in Northern Kentucky Thursday damaged a building and prompted a shelter-in-place order.

An intense fire in a tractor-trailer in Northern Kentucky Thursday damaged a building and prompted a shelter-in-place order. (WKRC, Ryan Morris)
The truck began burning at the corner of KY 467 West and KY 35 in Gallatin County. The flames were so heavy that crews evacuated the Sparta Post Office, which was damaged. And residents had to stay indoors.
The road will be closed into Thursday's evening hours as hazardous materials crews clean it up.

NEW HAVEN, Conn. ‰?? A school in New Haven was evacuated Thursday morning after a reported hazmat situation that sent 12 students and two teachers to the hospital as a precaution, officials said.
The New Haven Fire Department was called to Wexler Grant School on Foote Street around 10:30 a.m. Thursday on a report that something in the air was making people sick and their eyes water. Other symptoms included scratchy throats.
The airborne irritant was later determined to be a defensive spray - such as mace - that was found in a cubby inside one classroom. School officials said the classroom in question was being vented and cleaned.

A laboratory at Moi Girls High School in Eldoret has been destroyed after it caught fire last night.
The cause of the fire is suspected to be an electrical fault.
Firefighters from the Uasin Gishu county rushed to the school which is less than three kilometres away and battled the fire for more than three hours.
Ainabkoi police boss Leonard Mate said they were still investigating the incident.
The school administration and the police said no student or staff were injured in the incident.
"Everyone is safe but the lab has been completely destroyed," Matete said.
There were explosions during the inferno because of chemicals stored in the lab.

"The chemicals used the day prior [Monday] was in fact used in an experiment done many times over the years," Hooper said. "However, the next day, one of the chemicals was replaced by another for a first time experiment. My son just happened to be the one completing the experiment by lighting it.
"Not only was he injured but was lifelined to Indy burn center and will have to go into skin graft surgeries and therapy. Our thoughts are with the others injured as well. No one wishes injury on their child. This is a tragic incident. However there are facts missing/twisted and we are still trying process what has happened ourselves."
Mark Baker, the Northeast School Corp. superintendent, issued a statement via email, saying the school is hoping that the students all recover in a timely manner.
"The school corporation regrets the accident that occurred," Baker said. "We are cooperating fully with the Indiana State Fire Marshal's office as they investigate the incident. We wish the students involved a full and speedy recovery."

ATTLEBORO ‰?? An Attleboro company where a worker died in November of burns suffered in a flash fire has been fined over $47,000 for alleged workplace safety violations.
Composite Modules Inc., 61 Union St., was cited for six alleged serious safety violations and fined $47,816 by the U.S. Occupational Safety and Health Administration, according to records made public Thursday.
The alleged violations came after an investigation by the agency into the Nov. 11, 2021 flash fire at the downtown plant that fatally injured 26-year-old Nathan Collito of Attleboro.
Collito, who was working in a room on the third floor of the plant, suffered second- and third-degree burns over his body and died two days later at Rhode Island Hospital in Providence.
An investigation determined he was working with a chemical used during a cleaning process when the substance accidentally ignited, causing an explosion and triggering the building‰??s sprinkler system, according to the state Fire Marshal‰??s office.

SAN DIEGO ‰?? The City of San Diego is suing more than 20 companies over decades-long water contamination from toxic chemical called PFAS.
The lawsuit claims manufacturers like 3M, DuPont, and Raytheon made firefighting foam that contained PFAS and alleges the companies concealed "knowledge about the grave environmental and human health dangers of these compounds."
PFAS are manmade chemicals that are known for repelling both water and oil.
Research has linked PFAS to cancer, fertility issues and damage to the kidneys and liver.
In December, CBS 8 reported about the detection of PFAS around military bases in southern California.
"For years and years, we've known the military's heavy use of PFAS based firefighting foam has impacted service members, their families and surrounding communities," said Senator Alex Padilla (D-CA).
The 49-page lawsuit states the chemicals have been detected in wastewater from the Point Loma Wastewater Treatment Plant and South Bay Water Reclamation Plant.

portion of the gym, indoor practice basketball court and pool area at Fresno City College were evacuated Thursday because of a potentially hazardous chemical, fire officials said.
An employee in the building started to feel symptoms of inhaling a chemical used for pool maintenance just before noon, according to Johnathan Lopez, a spokesperson for the Fresno Fire Department.
Fresno City College spokesperson Kathy Bonilla confirmed the hazmat incident and told The Bee the material was suspected to be muriatic acid, near the pool.

A new resource created by the Victorian Farmers Federation Making Our Farms Safer Project will help Victorian farmers to manage the risks of dangerous chemicals on their farms.
The Victorian Farmers Federation Making Our Farms Safer project teamed up with Agplus Multi Consulting, ChemClear and drumMUSTER in production of The Hazardous Chemical Handling and Storage Guide.
The Hazardous Chemical Handling and Storage Guide is part of the Making Our Farms Safer project, funded by the Victorian Government to provide all Victorian farmers with support and resources to improve health and safety on farms.
Senior Farm Safety Advisor, at the VFF Making Our Farms Safer Project, John Darcy, said the new guidance fills a hole in the state of knowledge for Victorian farmers on what constitutes good practice for chemical handling on farms.

POLLUTION KILLS 9 MILLION PEOPLE A YEAR, REPORT SAYS

Pollution causes the premature deaths of 9 million people a year worldwide, an international group of researchers says in a report that calls for governments to crack down on contamination (Lancet 2022, DOI: 10.1016/S2542-5196(22)00090-0).
‰??Urgent attention is needed to control pollution and prevent pollution-related disease, with an emphasis on air pollution and lead poisoning, and a stronger focus on hazardous chemical pollution,‰?? write the authors, who are the Lancet‰??s Commission on pollution and health says in the paper.
About 90% of the premature deaths linked to pollution occur in low- and middle-income countries, the commission says. This deadly pollution stems from growth in industries and cities, the burning of fossil fuels, and a lack of adequate policies for controlling industrial chemicals, it says. The panel used data from 2019 as the basis of its findings.
Some 6.7 million of the 9 million deaths are caused by air pollution, mainly airborne particulates, the commission finds. Another 1.8 million are due to lead poisoning or exposure to other chemicals. ‰??Given the large number of chemical pollutants and their ubiquity in the modern environment, the disease burden attributable to chemical pollution is likely to be substantially greater than current estimates,‰?? the report states.

FARMERSBURG, Ind. (AP) ‰?? The most severely injured among four western Indiana high school chemistry students hurt during an experiment that went awry will require skin graft surgery and therapy, his father said Wednesday.
David Hooper said his son, Ethan, was airlifted Tuesday to the Eskenazi Health burn center in Indianapolis after initially being taken to Terre Haute Regional Hospital.
Ethan received second and third degree burns to his left arm, primarily from the elbow to his fingertips, and to his face, his father told the Tribune-Star.
The mishap at North Central High School near the Sullivan County town of Farmersburg is being investigated by the state fire marshal‰??s office.
Two investigators with the Indiana Department of Homeland Security visited the school on Wednesday to help investigate Tuesday's accident, said David Hosick, a spokesman for the state agency.
Hosick said the incident involving an unspecified chemistry experiment may have involved ‰??some sort of explosion."
The school's principal, Nancy Liston, said the three other injured students were treated and later released at a local hospital for minor cuts and burns and were back in school Wednesday.
Liston said the students were conducting an Advanced Placement course chemistry experiment outside the school that involved fire when ‰??something went wrong."
Liston said the experiment had been conducted many times in the past, including Monday, with no incidents.
Liston said the school, and the district‰??s insurance, were investigating the cause of the accident.

HAZARDOUS MATERIALS REMOVED FROM WAREHOUSE USED BY HOMELESS AS SHELTER

NEWARK ‰?? Nearly 600 steel drums and plastic totes containing hazardous materials were recently removed from a South 21st Street brownfield site used by the homeless for shelter.
The former Quality Chemical location still contains hazardous waste buried underground at 209-217 S. 21st St., located between Packaging Corporation of America and a small shopping center.
City of Newark Development Director Mark Mauter told Newark City Council on Monday the city worked with the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency and Ohio EPA to remove the hazardous materials in February, at no cost to the city.
A warehouse on the site contained 479 55-gallon steel drums and 111 plastic totes about the same size as the drums, and five pallets of smaller containers. The initial investigation found the presence of flammable and corrosive hazardous waste metals, including arsenic, cadmium, chromium and ammonia, Mauter said.

OLD SAYBROOK, Conn. ‰?? An investigation is underway at an industrial area in Old Saybrook.
Both Old Saybrook officers and state police troopers have responded to the area, and state police explosive investigation units were also spotted at the scene.
The center of the investigation is on Center Road West.
Sources tell FOX61 the investigation is centered around the LabDIRECT LLC building, a biochemical supplier. Sources also say the hazmat situation involves dangerous chemicals.
Investigators have been at the scene for several hours.
At this time it's unknown what prompted the incident but Old Saybrook police said there is no threat to the public.

A forest fire triggered several landmine explosions along the Line of Control in Jammu and Kashmir's Poonch district, officials said on Wednesday.
The fire that started in a forest across the LoC on Monday spread to the Indian side in the Mendhar sector, they said. The fire triggered the explosion of nearly half a dozen landmines that were part of the anti-infiltration obstacle system, officials said.
"The forest fire has been raging for the past three days. We along with the Army are dousing the fire. "The fFire was brought under control but this morning it started in Daramshal block and spread fast due to powerful winds", Forester Kanar Hussain Shah said.
He added that the blaze was later brought under control with the help of the Army as it reached near the border hamlet, he said.
In Rajouri district, another huge fire broke out in the Sunderbandi area near the border which spread to other forest areas, including Ghambhir, Nikka, Panjgraye, Brahamana, Moghala, officials said on Wednesday.

URINE LEVELS OF TOXIC OR CONCERNING CHEMICALS ARE HIGH DURING PREGNANCY

Pregnant women have a high level of exposure to dozens of chemicals that may harm the developing fetus, according to new research (Env. Sci. & Technol., 2022, DOI: 10.1021/acs.est.1c08942). This chemical burden is increased in Black and Hispanic women as well as in women with less educational attainment, reports the study, which was the largest one to date to track exposure to such a high number of chemicals in a diverse sample of pregnant participants.
The study ‰??reminds us that we have this tremendous body burden of chemicals that either have been proven toxic or haven‰??t been proven safe yet,‰?? says Bruce Lanphear, an environmental health scientist at Simon Fraser University, who wasn‰??t involved in the work. ‰??It raises the question again of are we doing enough to protect pregnant women and developing fetuses from all these toxic chemicals that we are all exposed to.‰??
The study, part of a US program called Environmental influences on Child Health Outcomes (ECHO), analyzed urine samples from 171 women, 60% of whom were Black or Hispanic, in five US states and Puerto Rico. Most samples were collected between 2017 and 2020. The researchers homed in on 103 chemicals from 9 chemical categories with known or likely human toxicity, including bisphenols, insecticides, organophosphate esters, and phthalates. Some of the chemicals were metabolic breakdown products of parent compounds from these categories. Several of the chemicals found are not yet monitored by government regulatory agencies for their effects on human health but have either shown signs of toxicity or are structurally similar to compounds that have.
The team looked for these chemicals using a new mass spectrometry‰??based method that ‰??for the first time was able to measure multiple chemicals in multiple groups in a small amount of urine sample,‰?? says Jessie P. Buckley, an environmental epidemiologist at Johns Hopkins University, who co-led the work.
At least 30 compounds were detected in more than half the women in the study. The researchers found 73 of the target analytes at least once in the urine samples. The researchers also found higher levels of chemicals from several chemical types, including parabens, phthalates, and bisphenols, neonicotinoids, phthalates, and polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons, in Hispanic women than in White women, and higher levels of parabens in Black women than in White women. ‰??Some beauty products or other personal care products and foods may contribute to this,‰?? says Buckley, but further studies are needed to pin down the cause.

The university said the incident happened at the Medical Center Company building. It‰??s located on Circle Drive, near the campus and University Hospitals.
The spill was stabilized shortly after 11 a.m. Cleveland officials said it involved chlorine.

BHARUCH/SURAT: At least 30 people were injured in a fire at an agrochemical factory in Dahej, Bharuch, on Tuesday. District officials said that the fire broke out after an explosion in the factory's boiler.
Thick black smoke billowing from the factory of Bharat Rasayan's agrochemical unit could be seen from far away, said fire officials who had rushed to the site. According to fire officials, at least 30 people rescued from the factory have been shifted to two private hospitals in Bharuch. Out of those injured, the condition of 10 persons was critical, they added.
One fire official said that about 15 fire tenders from Dahej, Bharuch and Ankleshwar were pushed into service to control the fire. He said that though the exact reason for the fire was not known, the primary inquiry revealed that there was an explosion in one of the boilers in the factory.

An explosion and subsequent fire has killed six people and injured a further five at a chemical facility in Kocevje, Slovenia.
The blast occurred on the morning of 12 May at a site operated by Melamin, which makes melamine-based polymers, resins and additives for a range of industries. The resultant fire was put out less than 90 minutes later, according to local news reports.
An investigation into the cause of the incident is underway, but the plant‰??s general manager, Srecko Stefanic, indicated to local press that the most likely cause was human error.

A spill of chemicals at Sheboygan‰??s Blue Harbor Resort on Monday sent fire, medical and HazMat rushing to the scene after an employee was overcome by fumes.
Sheboygan Fire Department BattalionChief Pat Nicolaus said they received the call of a possible hazardous material leak in the pool filtration room area at 12:24 Monday afternoon. The first units arriving on the scene were told by the employee that he‰??d opened the door to the filtration room and was overcome with fumes. He immediately closed the door and called the fire department. Firefighters then evacuated the immediate area of the filtration room pending the arrival of the HazMat team.
Those responders entered the filtration room in fully encapsulated suits and found two hoses that were disconnected from the filtration system. The hoses had spilled a minimal amount of chemicals onto the floor which then mixed, reacting together to cause the noxious oder and fumes.
After the HazMat team turned off the pumps and valves controlling the part of the filtration system involved in the spill, fire department crews washed down the area and diluted the chemicals to make the area safe. There were no further problems or injuries resulting from the incident.
