Thick black smoke billowing from the factory of Bharat Rasayan's agrochemical unit could be seen from far away, said fire officials who had rushed to the site. According to fire officials, at least 30 people rescued from the factory have been shifted to two private hospitals in Bharuch. Out of those injured, the condition of 10 persons was critical, they added.
One fire official said that about 15 fire tenders from Dahej, Bharuch and Ankleshwar were pushed into service to control the fire. He said that though the exact reason for the fire was not known, the primary inquiry revealed that there was an explosion in one of the boilers in the factory.

A spill of chemicals at Sheboygan‰??s Blue Harbor Resort on Monday sent fire, medical and HazMat rushing to the scene after an employee was overcome by fumes.
Sheboygan Fire Department BattalionChief Pat Nicolaus said they received the call of a possible hazardous material leak in the pool filtration room area at 12:24 Monday afternoon. The first units arriving on the scene were told by the employee that he‰??d opened the door to the filtration room and was overcome with fumes. He immediately closed the door and called the fire department. Firefighters then evacuated the immediate area of the filtration room pending the arrival of the HazMat team.
Those responders entered the filtration room in fully encapsulated suits and found two hoses that were disconnected from the filtration system. The hoses had spilled a minimal amount of chemicals onto the floor which then mixed, reacting together to cause the noxious oder and fumes.
After the HazMat team turned off the pumps and valves controlling the part of the filtration system involved in the spill, fire department crews washed down the area and diluted the chemicals to make the area safe. There were no further problems or injuries resulting from the incident.

MESA, AZ (3TV/CBS 5) - Garbage trucks in Mesa are catching fire, creating dangerous conditions for truck drivers and the community. City officials said there have been six garbage truck fires in the last two months because people are throwing away hazardous materials in the trash.
‰??We want residents to know that hazardous materials never should go in a trash or container,‰?? said Mariano Reyes with the City of Mesa Environmental Management and Sustainability.
Items like batteries, aerosol cans, pool chemicals and propane gas tanks should be dropped off at the Mesa Hazardous Materials Facility. Reyes said even if they are empty, those items can catch fire or explode. ‰??They can still contain enough liquid material in them that when they are compacted in our garbage trucks, it can actually cause an explosion,‰?? said Reyes.
The facility even has a ‰??swap shop‰?? where people can drop off used hazardous items like paint, cleaning products and other chemicals that Mesa residents can pick up for free. The facility is open Wednesday through Saturday from 7 a.m. to noon. For a full list of items it accepts, click here.

Boeing has agreed to strict new protocols to clean up the contamination of the former Santa Susana Field Laboratory in the hills of Simi Valley, where rocket engines, small-scale nuclear reactors, and chemical lasers were once researched and tested.
The framework was announced last week and involves Cal EPA's Department of Toxic Substances Control and the Los Angeles Regional Water Quality Control Board. It ensures Boeing will clean up radionuclides in soil to levels that would have existed without industrial activity, cleanup of chemical contamination to restore areas to the standard of "resident with a garden," and so that stormwater runoff from those former testing areas will not be polluted.

What started as an innocent backyard fire in Pleasant Grove backyard yesterday quickly spiraled out of control and brought down power lines in the area.
According to Andrew Engemann, Pleasant Grove fire chief, the fire began when a man started burning unsuitable materials in his backyard.
‰??A gentleman in one of the homes was in the backyard burning some stuff that probably shouldn‰??t have been burning,‰?? Engemann said. ‰??Just too close to fence lines and the sheds. Just a reckless type of burning; he probably shouldn‰??t have been doing it but he had nowhere else to do it.‰??
The man had left the fire unattended to go inside his home when it quickly spread along the fence line to two nearby dry wooden sheds. Residents of the home were evacuated, and American Fork Fire & Rescue responded to the scene.
As the fire progressed, flammable chemicals that were stored inside one of the sheds exploded.
‰??He had a number of chemicals and stuff in one of the sheds that had some minor explosions,‰?? Engemann said. ‰??We did have one propane tank that actually exploded, which made a pretty good noise and actually got everyone‰??s attention.‰??
According to Engemann, one of the chemical explosions took down surrounding power lines.

British Columbia employer Teck Metals Ltd. has been fined $55,060.11 for an occupational health and safety violation relating to ammonia.
The incident happened at the company‰??s Trail worksite. Liquid anhydrous ammonia was released when loss of containment occurred from a railcar at an unloading area.
The site and adjacent workplaces were evacuated, and several people were exposed to the ammonia vapour, according to WorkSafeBC.
Following an inspection of the site, WorkSafeBC found that the firm had not adequately communicated or trained its workers in safe work procedures for identifying and responding to ammonia leaks. This included a lack of practice drills for all workers involved in ammonia-related work, and a lack of clear procedures and supervision to ensure procedures were being followed.

STROUD TOWNSHIP, PA ‰?? It was all hands on deck on Bangor Mountain Road after a tractor-trailer overturned, spilling the chemicals it was hauling.
Barbara Bill says she heard the entire thing happen.
"Like a great big boom. Crash. Like two big boom, boom, and boom. But I see the creek stinks already," said Bill.
Emergency personnel from Monroe and Northampton Counties were called to the scene just before 10 a.m.
Stroud Township Fire Chief Bill Unruh said his firefighters were exposed to what he believes were swimming pool-related chemicals when they showed up to rescue the male driver.
He was rushed to the hospital.
"We had multiple patients, firefighters having to be deconned and cleared and sent to the hospital to be monitored for their conditions. So there was a little bit of an inhalation hazard. Most of the guys have been treated and released as far as I'm aware," said Chief Unruh.
