CHILDERSBURG, Ala. ‰??
The Childersburg Fire and Rescue Department cleared the scene Sunday afternoon, hours after evacuating a business and closing part of Highway 280.

Talladega 911 received a call at 10 a.m. of "gasoline coming from the ground."

Crews arrived to find at least 350 gallons of gasoline had leaked onto the pavement at 32183 Highway 280 at the Pit Stop.

HAZMAT LESSONS THAT CAN BE OVERLOOKED

Tags: industrial, discovery, environmental, unknown_chemical

When firefighters receive hazmat training, they enter into a new world of strange terms and unknown hazards. They might be worried about ‰??ethyl methyl death‰?? or ‰??growing a third arm from radiation.‰?? Of course, these are fallacies, but the concern that they can prompt indicates the fears that firefighters have about the unknown threats in hazmat responses.

Through instruction and safe tactics, even new firefighters who only are trained at the awareness level can manage this unfamiliar world of chemical safety. Unfortunately, some of the most basic components of this level of training are omitted even by those who have the best of intentions.

Arriving on scene of a hazmat incident can make even the most seasoned firefighter anxious. Although firefighters have many points of reference to solve the puzzle that‰??s presented to them on fires, medical runs, vehicle accidents and other more common incidents, the low-frequency/high-risk hazmat incident can cause tactical decision-making to be disrupted by the challenge of hazards that are unfamiliar. Some of the unfamiliar issues that are in play with hazmat challenges include how a chemical reacts with other chemicals or heat; how the chemical expands beyond the initial release; and the unique harms from the chemical. These concepts quickly can overwhelm.

CHEMICAL RECYCLING OF PLASTIC GETS A BOOST IN 18 US STATES‰??BUT ENVIRONMENTALISTS QUESTION WHETHER IT REALLY IS RECYCLING

Plastic pollution is virtually everywhere on earth, and the public is increasingly concerned about the buildup of plastic litter in neighborhoods, parks, and beaches as well as enormous garbage patches in the world‰??s oceans. Haunting photos of animals entangled in plastic cords or speared with plastic straws appear regularly on social media. And news reports about microplastics contaminating water and food stoke concern about how to keep this ubiquitous and popular synthetic material out of the environment.
In the US, people are asking their elected leaders to reduce plastic pollution.
To that end, environmental advocates are seeking polices to reduce the use of single-use plastics such as beverage bottles and snack bags. They point out that less than 10% of plastic used in the US ends up recycled.
Meanwhile, the American Chemistry Council (ACC), the major trade group for the chemical industry, is offering another plan‰??policies to promote chemically recycling plastics by breaking them down into molecular building blocks for reuse. This process, also called advanced recycling, differs from mechanical recycling. The mechanical method, still in use, chips up used plastic into bits that are blended into virgin plastic, which is made from oil or natural gas, to give it recycled content.

INDIA: POLICE ARREST COMPANY OWNERS AFTER BUILDING FIRE KILLS 27 IN NEW DELHI

Police arrested two owners of a company that manufactures and sells security cameras after a massive fire reportedly started in their office in a four-storey commercial building in the Indian capital, killing 27 people and injuring 12 others, police and fire officials said Saturday.

The police registered a case of culpable homicide not amounting to murder and a criminal conspiracy that is punishable with life imprisonment or 10 years in jail.

The building had no clearance from the fire department and it was not equipped with fire safety equipment like extinguishers, said Atul Garg, director of Delhi Fire Services.

Garg said the fire started on the first floor of the building on Friday evening and spread quickly to other areas where inflammable plastic material used to manufacture equipment including security cameras and a large quantity of cardboard used for packaging were stored.

MASSIVE FIRE AT CHEMICAL FACTORY IN FARIDABAD, 15 FIRE TENDERS RUSHED

massive fire broke out at the warehouse of a chemical factory near Faridabad‰??s Anangpur village, barely 50 km from New Delhi. An official said that 15 fire brigades have been rushed to the spot.

Last month, a fire in another national capital region had killed two people. The blaze at a garbage mound in Gurugram‰??s Manesar gutted several adjoining shanties. The fire broke out in the garbage mound at a scrap yard spread over 25 acre. The blaze spread to the shanties due to a storm, officials had said.

SEMITRACTOR-TRAILER‰??S OIL SPILL TUESDAY COINCIDES WITH DISCUSSION ABOUT HAZMAT FROM CDOT AND SUMMIT COUNTY OFFICIALS

Earlier this week, a semitractor-trailer carrying oil lost control and overturned after driving down the westbound Interstate 70 off-ramp at Exit 205, causing an emulsified oil spill and traffic delays on Tuesday, May 10.

Coincidentally, that same day, the Summit Board of County Commissioners and the Colorado Department of Transportation held a discussion during the commissioners‰?? work session meeting to discuss project updates. During the conversation, Summit County Commissioner Tamara Pogue brought up concerns regarding semitractor-trailers carring hazardous materials and their routes in and around Summit County and asked CDOT officials where the issue stands.

Currently, hazmat vehicles are required to use U.S. Highway 6 and take Loveland Pass when it is open. Drivers are only allowed to travel through the tunnels hourly when the pass is closed, a process that typically includes a 15-20 minute closure of the tunnel to allow the vehicles to make their way through without any other traffic.

ANDOVER, Kan. (KSNW) ‰?? Andover Central High School students were evacuated due to a sodium chemical spill in a chemistry classroom on Friday morning.

The district said in a Facebook post that fire authorities urged the evacuation. All students were taken to Jaguar Stadium for about an hour and a half.

The district said the spill was cleaned up, and the building was cleared for re-entry around 11:25 a.m.

REHOBOTH ‰?? The fire department is warning residents about the danger of mixing chemicals following two incidents last weekend.

In one, a resident was overcome by fumes and taken to the hospital for treatment after mixing Simple Green, a powerful cleaner and degreaser, and bleach, the department said.

In the second, a resident accidentally combined towels covered in acetone and bleach, resulting in a chemical reaction and fire. Luckily, according to fire officials, the resident got the burning towels outside and was able to put them out. There was only minor damage to a deck.

Fire officials warn that these chemicals alone, even used for their intended purposes, can be dangerous. Mixing them can cause unexpected and unpredictable results, they said.

JEFFERSON CITY ‰?? Three adults were taken to the hospital for inhalation injuries and surface burns after an acid spill Thursday afternoon on Lincoln University's campus.

According to a release from Jefferson City Fire Chief Matt Schofield, the fire department responded to the Small Animal Research Facility at Lincoln University for a reported hazardous materials incident.

First arriving fire units from Fire Station No. 4 and Cole County EMS personnel treated patients and evacuation was already underway as authorities arrived.

The Jefferson City Fire Department and Cole County Emergency Response Team made a controlled entry to mitigate the spill and confirm everyone was out of the building.
