3 PEOPLE INJURED IN ACID SPILL AT LINCOLN UNIVERSITY

JEFFERSON CITY ‰?? Three adults were taken to the hospital for inhalation injuries and surface burns after an acid spill Thursday afternoon on Lincoln University's campus.
According to a release from Jefferson City Fire Chief Matt Schofield, the fire department responded to the Small Animal Research Facility at Lincoln University for a reported hazardous materials incident.
First arriving fire units from Fire Station No. 4 and Cole County EMS personnel treated patients and evacuation was already underway as authorities arrived.
The Jefferson City Fire Department and Cole County Emergency Response Team made a controlled entry to mitigate the spill and confirm everyone was out of the building.

FIVE KILLED IN SLOVENIA CHEMICAL FACTORY EXPLOSION 'CAUSED BY HUMAN ERROR'

An explosion at a chemical factory in Slovenia killed five and left six injured, officials said on Thursday.
A cistern exploded early Thursday, sparking a fire at the factory of resin supplier Melamin, according to fire brigade chief Leon Behin.
The factory is located in Kocevje municipality, some 60 kilometres south of Ljubljana.
"Unfortunately our fears have been confirmed," Melamin head Srecko Stefanic told reporters. The strength of the explosion "did not leave them any chance of survival", he said, in visible shock.
Officials earlier said four people were missing.
The victims were a worker and "four outside workers" at the company.
In addition, six workers were injured, including two who were hospitalised with serious burns, according to the hospital in Ljubljana treating them.
One of them is in a critical situation, Stefanic said.
The tragedy was "caused by a human error", he said, declining to give more information until the investigation has been completed.

FIRE BREAKS OUT AT PPG COATINGS AND RESINS PLANT

Workers evacuated the PPG Industries coatings and resins plant in Springdale, PA Wednesday after a blaze ignited in the facility, several local news organizations reported.
Crews from several area fire departments responded to the site after receiving word that smoke and flames were in vents at the facility around 3 p.m., coverage by TribLive.com said. The flames were quickly controlled.
No injuries were logged during the incident, according to broadcaster WPXI.
A PPG spokesperson told TribLive.com that damages were minimal and that operations were not impacted by the fire. Employees were allowed to go back inside the plant after about an hour.

SPAN OF HIGHWAY IN ST. CATHARINES OPENS AFTER DANGEROUS CHEMICAL SPILL

Highway 406 in St. Catharines fully reopened around 10 p.m. on Thursday night, following a chemical spill that necessitated road repairs.
The closure on the northbound 406 lasted for more than a day. The southbound lanes had reopened on Wednesday.
The closure was required after a truck leaked hydrochloric acid on the highway between Westchester Crescent and Glendale Avenue. The ruined asphalt needed to be removed and then the roadway had to be repaved.

Traffic on Interstate 10 is backed up for miles in Kenner due a chemical spill from an 18-wheeler, traffic officials said at 11:30 a.m. Thursday.
A tanker driver headed eastbound while carrying liquid sodium hydroxide spilled about 50 gallons of the caustic chemical on the roadway near the Williams Boulevard exit after the driver slammed on the brakes, just after 11 a.m., Kenner Fire Chief Terence Morris said. The sudden stop caused the top to come off the tanker, allowing the chemical to escape.

CY-FAIR ‰?? Firefighters in the Cy-Fair area are warning residents of a controlled fire caused by a burning lithium generator.
According to Cy-Fair official Eddie Cruz, a call about the fire came in around 1:05 p.m Wednesday.
Cruz said the fire is now under control, but will probably continue to burn internally for the next three to four days.
Cy-Fair Fire Department officials add that the fire is no danger to the public at this time and that air quality is being monitored.

LOUISVILLE, Ky. (WAVE) - Traffic is delayed on Interstate 264 West after a refrigeration semi truck overturns and catches on fire on Wednesday evening.
Dispatchers confirmed calls came in around 6:53 p.m. to Louisville Metro Police on reports of an overturned truck with a fuel leak on I-264 West near the Taylorsville Road exit.
Witnesses told LMPD that a driver of a passenger vehicle had cut in front of the semi truck, causing it to swerve and strike the concrete barrier, roll on its side and burst into flames, according to LMPD spokesman Dwight Mitchell.

POTENTIAL HAZARDOUS MATERIALS INCIDENT IN CHAMPAIGN

CHAMPAIGN, Ill. (WCCU/WICS) ‰?? Champaign firefighters were called in Wednesday afternoon to a potential hazardous materials incident.
It happened in the 3200 block of Farber Drive.
Crews found an overheating 55-gallon drum of aluminum powder suspended in water.
There were three drums of product, that were stored outside, overheating and beginning to boil.
Firefighters deployed a single unmanned line to cool the containers in order to keep the product from being released.
No injuries were reported and no evacuations were necessary.
The Champaign Fire Department says the incident did not pose a threat to the environment or the surrounding community.

MADISON COUNTY, Ky. (WKYT) - Several people have been taken to the hospital after a chemical incident in Madison County.
Agencies from multiple counties responded to a residential area on Short Line Pike, just east of Berea.
Emergency officials at the scene told us swimming pool chemicals were being mixed inside a home, which caused some sort of reaction.
‰??We have identified it as two pool cleaning or preparation products. And they were mixed,‰?? said Dustin Hister, Madison Co. Emergency Management.

MIDLAND COUNTY, Texas (KMID/KPEJ) ‰?? A chemical fire in Midland County sent one person to the hospital Wednesday night.
YourBasin.Com is working to confirm the name of the business, along the N. I-20 Service Rd. by mile marker 148, on the border of Midland and Martin Counties.
Around 5:30 P.M. on Wednesday, fire departments across Midland County, and mutual aid from Martin County, responded to a fire call at a business.
‰??They were mixing or off-loading some chemical and somehow, it ignited,‰?? said Midland County Fire Marshal Justin Bunch. ‰??We got two flammable liquids involved: toluene and methanol‰?| What they were trying to mix them for, I don‰??t know. We‰??re still trying to investigate that.‰??
Thankfully, Bunch said no structures were damaged. Only the 55-barrel drums holding the chemicals were destroyed. They got hot and exploded, Bunch said.

SWANS FOUND DEAD AND COVERED IN OIL FOLLOWING CHEMICAL SPILL IN STALLINGBOROUGH

Two swans were found dead and another found covered in oil following a chemical spill in Stallingborough.
Volunteers from Cleethorpes Wildlife Rescue and officers from North East Lincolnshire Council made the shocking discoveries, along with a mile-and-a-half to two miles of contaminated water in Middle Drain.
The situation first came to light when volunteers from the rescue organisation found a swan covered in oil on a busy Grimsby road on Thursday, May 5.

ENVIRONMENTAL INJUSTICE LINKED TO URBAN NATURAL GAS LEAKS

In 2018, a series of explosions and fires spurred by leaks in underground gas lines burned 100 homes, displaced 8,000 people, and killed one man in Massachusetts‰??s Merrimack Valley. Besides the possibility of catastrophic explosions, natural gas leaks also release the greenhouse gas methane into the atmosphere, generate nauseating odors that can make people sick, and bump up residents‰?? utility bills by increasing the cost of gas delivery. Now, a new study links a community‰??s racial makeup and income level to local natural gas leaks‰??revealing patterns of ‰??infrastructure injustice‰?? across the US (Environ. Sci. Technol. 2022, DOI: 10.1021/acs.est.2c00097).
The study authors are members of a long-term research project pioneering ultrasensitive sensors mounted on the cars that Google uses to take photos for Google Street View. The sensors can detect tiny changes in the concentration of methane‰??the main component of natural gas‰??in the air and can track down leaks as they drive around a neighborhood.
Coauthor Zachary D. Weller of Pacific Northwest National Laboratory says this study is among the first to examine leaks in metropolitan natural gas distribution systems through the lens of environmental justice.
Between 2014 and 2018, the researchers conducted leak detection surveys across 13 US metropolitan areas. They then developed open-source data processing algorithms and created statistical models in order to investigate the relationship between the number of leaks per mile of roadway and certain socio-demographic indicators reported by the US Census Bureau‰??s American Community Survey.
