Dewar Tip-over

On Saturday, 2/5/22, a researcher was moving a full 100L Dewar of Helium from the Cryogenic Facility to another building when it tipped over in the parking lot. Fortunately, the researcher was pushing and not pulling the Dewar, so when it tipped over it missed the person. The Dewar did not leak, and did not appear to be significantly damaged. If the Dewar hit the person they could have been seriously injured.

A review of the training identified a gap regarding the movement of Dewars across parking lots or over other uneven surfaces. Cryogenic Facility, Environmental Safety and Health, and Learning and Development staff are revising the training. Users will be required to complete the updated course or review updated information.

Thank you,

DOE OPEXShare
