GIRARD ' City fire Chief James Petruzzi said people driving to the area from Akron could see the dark discoloration of the sky during a large scrapyard fire Saturday afternoon at the Metalico Inc. property off U.S. Route 422 near the Interstate 80 exit.
Petruzzi said more than 40 fire departments responded to the scene from Trumbull, Mahoning, Geauga, Ashtabula and Portage counties with three water-fill sites set up at three locations. Petruzzi said he will determine this week how much water was used to put out the fire.
Workers at Metalico called Trumbull 911 after seeing black smoke coming from the center of a large pile of metal that included old school buses, scrap cars and tires. Petruzzi said cause of the fire is under investigation.
'No buildings were damaged, and no one was injured,' he said.
Mahoning County HazMat crews came to the scene and made sure nothing got into the Mahoning River. Petruzzi said HazMat crews also were checking the air quality for safety of workers and the public.

Anakapalle: A fire broke out at the ENT Plant of SNF (India) Private Limited in JN Pharma City at Parawada in Anakapalle district on Saturday afternoon. The fire mishap has led to fear among the workers. The police said that the fire broke out in the waste chemical storage tank. No casualties or injuries have been reported in the incident.
The company is specializing exclusively in the preparation of water-soluble polymers and water and waste-water treatment and is the only leading polymer producer.
Two fire tenders were rushed to the incident site to douse the flames. The situation is almost under control and nothing to worry about, the police added.
The initial investigation into the incident revealed that a chemical reaction allegedly due to the overflow of the waste chemical from the storage tank might have been the reason for the fire-mishap. The officials from the Revenue, Police, Fire-Service personnel, and a few other departments visited the incident site.

On Sunday, April 10, the Wisconsin Department of Natural Resources responded to a hazardous material spill in Badger Mill Creek.
On Thursday, April 7, an official at the city noticed an unusual discharge from a pipe leading into the creek and contacted the DNR.
Badger Mill Creek is located within Verona's southwest neighborhood.
While nearby Carnes Company was cleaning a paint tank, a tripped circuit breaker led to latex paint accidentally spilling into the creek through a discharge pipe.
The DNR is now investigating the exact chemicals released by the paint and the extent of the damage.

INVENTION AS A COMPLEMENT TO HIGH SCHOOL CHEMISTRY

Does invention belong in the chemistry classroom? This article attempts to answer this question by describing how invention education first took root in a chemistry class at Ridgewood High School in Ridgewood, NJ, and then expanded to other students with diverse interests to find a solution to two worldwide problems: satisfying the need for safe drinking water and reducing plastic waste. Specifically, it describes the students' journey step-by-step during the COVID-19 pandemic to invent a self-sanitizing and sustainable Solar Aqua Tech water bottle. The concept underlying this invention was to quickly produce hydrogen peroxide (H2O2), a well-known sanitizing agent, on-demand within the confines of a bottle using only water, dissolved oxygen (O2), and solar power to eliminate pathogens in untreated water. Students had to convert this chemistry classroom concept into reality without a prescription and without knowing if their goal was even attainable. Since the journey did n!
ot take a linear path but veered in different directions as unexpected problems arose, the students sought guidance from academics, mentors, and local experts. Along the way, they acquired new knowledge with deepened understanding and overarching perspectives. Success was achieved only after many setbacks. In the end, the sense of accomplishment for finding a solution to two global problems instilled confidence in the students that, with empathy, perseverance, and resilience, they are equipped with essential skills to tackle 21st-century challenges. Invention, therefore, can be a valuable complement to the standard chemistry curriculum and is unparalleled in sparking a lifelong passion for learning.

ATLANTA ' One person was exposed to an Anhydrous ammonia spill just outside of Atlanta at 23799 SR-207 Pickaway County around 4:20 pm
Anhydrous ammonia is used as a fertilizer by field corn and wheat growers. Anhydrous ammonia (or just called ammonia) provides nitrogen, an essential plant nutrient to maximize yields. Ammonia is also found naturally in the environment, the result of vegetation and animal waste decay.
Mostly transported in bulk tanks by farmers, then hooked to farm equipment where it is sprayed by the liquid into the soil.
Why this spill is dangerous, ammonia vapors are lighter than air in some cases ammonia will hug the ground and drift. In high concentrations, this chemical can damage the lungs, skin, and eyes.

From the safety point of view, thermal risk analysis in the process industry is generally of significant importance and often requires calorimetric and kinetic modeling. These techniques were applied for the first time in the study of a highly exothermic condensation reaction, which is used to prepare 2,2‰?2-methylene-bis(4,6-di-tert-butylphenol) phosphate chloride, a quite important intermediate in the fine chemical industry. The thermodynamics properties such as reaction heat, adiabatic temperature rise, and specific heat capacity of the synthesis reaction were experimentally investigated under isothermal conditions using a robust process analytical technology-based in-line reaction calorimeter EasyMax. A kinetic correlation model was developed based on the calorimetry and subsequently verified. This exhibited a much more efficient and convenient way to study the reaction kinetics compared with the conventional off-line determination of molar concentration or conversion. A!
n accelerating rate calorimeter was used to reveal the thermal controllability of the reaction system as well as some potential hazards. The thermal and kinetic parameters lay a solid foundation for the design and safe operation of reactors. The related methods are also anticipated to be extended to a wide range of similar highly exothermic reactions.

TAMPA, Fla. ' Crews on a ship were evacuated after a fire erupted within the vessel early Friday morning, Tampa Fire Rescue said.
At around 5:30 a.m., firefighters responded to a reported ship fire located at 1616 Penny St., which is the address for International Ship Repair & Marine Services Inc., according to a news release.
Engine 4 was first on the scene of a vessel called "The Kelly Alafia," which is overseen by Savage Marine Services. The ship was at berth and undergoing repairs.
Fire rescue says crews were cleaning an area inside the cargo hold when oncoming crew smelled smoke during a shift change. After smelling the smoke within the hull, they called 911.
Ship staff and the marine chemist on scene were able to identify a byproduct of residual sulfur the barge transports caught on fire, according to fire rescue. The fire then became a hazardous materials operation because of a chemical product being burnt.
Investigators reportedly determined the cause of the fire came from welding.
All crew members were able to evacuate the ship, fire leaders report.

(CBS DETROIT) ' Madison Heights Mayor Roslyn Grafstein says although Electro-Plating Services made headlines in December 2019 following a chemical spill on Interstate 696, the business raised concerns in the city for years.
'Our legal team has been trying to get this condemned, trying to get this cleaned-up but the current owner has continuously fought us every step of the way,' Grafstein said.
The green ooze that was found leaking on the highway is hexavalent chromium, a carcinogen.
The public health hazard pushed the city council to approve the site to be demolished.
'We have some funding from the state and from the county to help with demolition costs,' Grafstein said.
'A few weeks ago, council approved a contractor who is skilled in this type of demolition.'
