NASHVILLE, Tennessee (WSMV) -- Nashville Fire responded to a crash involving a train and a fuel truck on Tuesday morning.
According to NFD, a train struck a fuel truck at the railroad crossing on 51st Avenue North around 8:30 a.m. Nashville Fire said the train was traveling at a low rate of speed but caused the fuel truck to spill its contents, nearly 5,000 gallons of fuel.
No fire was reported during the spill, and there were no injuries stemming from the incident.
'The tanker that was pierced we had to offload the remaining product from that tanker to another trailer and that is a very specialized process that our hazmat crews go through training for,' Nashville Fire Spokesperson Kendra Loney said. 'So, we are very grateful to have our crews trained and those techniques here.'

DAVIESS CO., Ind. (WEHT) ' One man has been pronounced dead after a 'hazardous materials incident' left him and another with serious injuries earlier this month.
Washington Indiana Police Detective Barry Hudson confirmed that on the morning of April 1 around 8:30, dispatch was contacted by an Eagle Railcar Services employee saying a man was down on the property. Officials said the call quickly changed to an incident involving two men down on the property.
According to Detective Hudson, life-saving measures were performed on both men by first responders on the scene before they were transferred to a hospital facility in Evansville. Family of James Ware, one of the men injured in the incident, confirmed with WEHT that he passed away on Easter.
The Indiana Occupational Safety and Health Administration says it is conducting a 'safety compliance inspection' that could take several months.

RAPID CITY, S.D. ' The large fire at Black Hawk business last week showed just how dangerous a fire like that can be not only to firefighters but also to the general public.
During the fire, large amounts of smoke filled with carcinogens and other contaminants became a point of contention among firefighters and the publics.
In fact, firefighters often come across hazardous materials when on the scene of a fire, which can be anything, according to Rapid City Fire officials.
'Any sort of chemical spill, gas release, unknown chemicals, anything like that,' said Captain Trapper Lappe, the Station Six Captain with the Rapid City Fire Department.
Many of the fire stations within RCFD specialize in something. Whether it's the department's Water Rescue Team at Station Three or the Hazardous Materials Team at Station Six.

ST MARYS: MASSIVE FIRE AT CHEMICAL FACILITY IN SYDNEY'S WEST

Firefighters battled a major blaze for more than two hours at a chemical storage facility in Sydney's west this morning, with the flames spreading to adjoining properties and covering the city in a blanket of thick black smoke.
About 130 firefighters in more than 25 trucks rushed to the scene at St Marys in a bid to contain the fire.
A 39-year-old worker was treated for serious burns to multiple areas of his body before being airlifted to Royal North Shore Hospital in a serious condition.
LPG cylinders and aerosol containers exploded in the Cleanaway Liquid Waste Facility next door, complicating efforts to douse the flames.
One witness said the explosions sounded like "popcorn in the microwave", with a "bunch of aerosol cans just popping off everywhere".

PLAQUEMINE, La. (AP) ' The Louisiana Department of Environmental Quality and Olin Corp. were monitoring the air Tuesday morning at and around a plant where a fire and leak sent a huge cloud of chlorine out of a chemical plant near Baton Rouge.
No injuries have been reported, said a statement emailed to The Associated Press on Tuesday for Olin Corp.
'Monitoring indicates there is currently no risk of offsite exposure; however, we will continue to monitor the entire area out of an abundance of caution,' the company said.
State regulators said a compressor caught fire and leaked liquid chlorine, The Advocate reported.
Olin would not comment on whether a compressor caught fire. 'Once all work is safely completed, we will conduct a thorough analysis to identify the cause of the event,' its statement said.

WICHITA, Kan. (KWCH and AP) - Update, 9:32 p.m.: Wichita County Clerk Lynda Goodrich confirmed barricades have been opened and evacuees can return home following displacement due to a reported chemical fire reported earlier in the day. Tuesday afternoon, the fire at the Nutrien Ag Solutions plant prompted evacuations for part of Leoti.
Update from AP: Officials say a fire at a fertilizer company in western Kansas has prompted evacuations Tuesday afternoon because hazardous materials were involved. Wichita County Clerk Lynda Goodrich says the Ford County Regional Hazardous Materials Team deployed to Leoti for the fire Tuesday afternoon and was fighting the blaze and removing hazardous material.
The fire began around 3:30 p.m. at a Nutrien Ag Solutions plant in Leoti. A company spokeswoman says no injuries were immediately reported. Wichita County officials requested people to avoid the area. The number of people evacuated isn't clear.
The Wichita County Sheriff's Office confirmed a chemical fire prompted evacuations in the northeast part of Leoti. Due to what the city described as 'a hazmat incident in the City of Leoti,' the city asked people to 'stay clear north of the railroad tracks.'

Safety evaluation of chemical reactions is very significant before industrial applications are conducted. A lot of thermal hazards are generated in the synthesis of 3,4-bis(4-nitrofurazan-3-yl)furoxan (DNTF) because of the strong exothermicity of the oxidation reaction, unstable hydrogen peroxide, and interactions between the materials. In this article, systematic parameters regarding the safe synthesis of DNTF were studied, including the preparation stage of reaction solution and the oxidation reaction step. A Calvet microcalorimeter and an RC1mx reaction calorimeter were employed for process safety research. Differential scanning calorimetry and adiabatic accelerating rate calorimetry were used to investigate the thermal stabilities of the materials and their thermal hazards. After screening of the thermal stabilities of the materials in the two stages, hazardous materials were identified, and their thermal safety parameters were obtained. Finally, two evaluation methods w!
ere applied to evaluate the hazard levels of the preparation process and the oxidation reaction process in the synthesis of DNTF on the basis of thermal safety parameters. This study provides critical safety technical guidance for the DNTF synthesis process and safety design.

Microplastics have been detected in living people's lungs for the first time. The lung tissue samples were taken from 11 individuals who had surgery at a hospital in Hull, UK.
The discovery adds to concerns about microplastic contaminants in the environment, but it was not a surprise to researchers in the field. In 2021, Brazilian pathologists found polymeric particles and fibres in lung tissue from 13 of 20 adults undergoing autopsy in Ṣo Paulo. And in February, researchers in the Netherlands reported plastic pollutants in the blood of healthy volunteers.
Microplastics form from the fragmentation and disintegration of plastics in furniture, packaging, clothing, disposable items, electronics and more. Usually defined as particles below 5mm, these can be inhaled and potentially cause harm. The most frequently detected polymers in the Brazilian study were polyethylene (PE) and polypropylene (PP).
In 11 of the 13 UK patients, microparticles ' 39 in total ' were detected using infrared spectroscopy. Twelve polymer types were recorded, with PP, polyethylene terephthalate (PET) and resin most abundant.

Cognitive psychologist Daniel Kahneman has spent his career studying the ways humans think, including the cognitive shortcuts and biases that shape'and sometimes misshape'our decisions. He was awarded the Nobel Prize in Economics in 2002 for integrating psychological research on how we make decisions under uncertainty into economics, and he is a member of the National Academy of Sciences.
Kahneman's 2011 bestseller, Thinking, Fast and Slow, won the National Academies Best Book Award and the Los Angeles Times Book Prize. His most recent book, coauthored with Olivier Sibony and Cass Sunstein and published last year, is Noise: A Flaw in Human Judgment. Issues in Science and Technology editor Sara Frueh spoke with Kahneman to get his insights on how we make decisions, the nature of noise and the problems it causes, and whether algorithms could improve decisionmaking.

They allege toxicants from the drug manufacturing unit are causing health issues
Tension prevailed at Akkireddygudem in Eluru district on Monday as villagers staged a dharna demanding that the Porus Laboratories Private Limited, where six workers died and 12 others suffered burns in a fire mishap on April 13, be permanently shut down.
The Andhra Pradesh Pollution Control Board (APPCB) has already ordered a temporary closure of the chemical factory following the mishap.
When Joint Collector P. Arun Babu, Assistant Collector T. Rahul Kumar Reddy and other officers visited the drug manufacturing unit on Monday to conduct an inquiry following the orders of District Collector V. Prasanna Venkatesh, hundreds of villagers thronged the factory and raised slogans demanding its permanent closure.
The villagers alleged that toxicants from the factory were causing severe health problems and demanded that action be taken against the management immediately.

FIRE OUT, SHELTER IN PLACE LIFTED AFTER CHLORINE LEAK AT FACILITY ON DOW CAMPUS

PLAQUEMINE - More than two hours after a fire caused a chemical leak at a facility inside the Dow Chemical campus in Iberville Parish, emergency crews determined the fire that caused panic late Monday had been put out.
The shelter in place was lifted just after midnight. Officials said they were able to give the "all clear."
Earlier Monday, a fire caused a chlorine leak at the Olin facility inside Dow. The fire, and what appeared to be a rupture of chlorine equipment, caused a huge cloud that prompted a shelter in place for Plaquemine.
The fire burned until emergency officials reported late Monday it was out. The shelter in place continued until just after midnight as a precaution.
"We have received information that the fire is out. Teams are near the 'hot zone' now attempting to determine if the leak has been contained," emergency officials said near midnight. "Olin / Dow personnel have been doing air monitoring near the site and are not picking up any readings," officials reported.
The shelter in place was eventually canceled early Tuesday. It had been in place since just before nine o'clock Monday evening.

SYDNEY NEWS: MAN SUFFERS BURNS IN WESTERN SYDNEY WAREHOUSE FIRE

A man in his 30s has suffered burns to his face and neck after an explosion and fire at a warehouse in Sydney's west.
New South Wales Ambulance says the man in his 20's was knocked to the ground after the explosion and is being treated for a range of burns.
More than 130 firefighters and 26 fire trucks attended the fire, which broke out at 6:30am at a St Marys chemical warehouse on Christie St.
Fire and Rescue NSW (FRNSW) said aerosol cans exploded at the site, while a liquid petroleum gas cylinder was also set on fire.
FRNSW has urged local residents to remain indoors to avoid dangerous fumes.
NSW Ambulance Acting Inspector Gregory Marshall said a man received "serious burns" in the fire.

HARYANA: FIRE BREAKS OUT AT CHEMICAL FACTORY IN SONEPAT

A major fire broke out in a chemical factory in Kundli, Sonepat on Sunday evening.
About 50 fire tenders, many of them from neighbouring Delhi, were pressed into the service to douse the flames, reported news agency PTI, quoting a police official.
Methanol and some other chemicals were kept in the factory, the police official from Sonipat told PTI over the phone.
He, however, said no one is stated to be trapped inside the factory complex. 'About 50 fire tenders, many among them summoned from Sonipat and neighbouring Haryana districts as well as from Delhi are trying to bring the flames under control,' he said.
The cause of the fire is yet to be ascertained. Details of casualties, if any, are awaited.
