In 2001 when we got into the business of repackaging and supplying
trimethylaluminum I conducted testing to determine what PPE, ER =
techniques,
ER packages were suitable for our use. Like all of the our products, =
arsine,
silane, phosphine, etc I put together a ER Package and Training modules
unique to the chemical for training of our 32 ER teams in Asia, US and
Europe.
I would offer the following comments for you to consider. Gloves are the
most important PPE since the hands are the more likely part of the body =
to
be exposed
We tested PPE by dripping 2 ml of trimethylaluminum onto the surface.
Underneath was a thermocouple and some filter paper. If the paper =
charred it
was way too high of a temperature likely to cause 2nd or 3rd degree =
burns.
We found that regular leather work gloves with a cloth inner liner =
provides
protection similar to the aluminized gloves that our supplier used. =
Since
the ER teams have to handle wrenches and assemble fittings for =
=BC" tubing,
physical dexterity was important. The aluminized gloves were stiff and
awkward to use. I also instructed the team members to use a leather =
glove
slightly larger than their hands so that they can quickly remove it =
should
it get splashed with TMA and continue burning. They wore a thin cotton =
glove
underneath for thermal protection.
The liquid TMA immediately saturated woven fabric like Nomex completely
charring the saturated area. Need to have a impermeable outer layer. =
Leather
performed well
I found this to be the case even for a violently reactive chemical such =
as
liquid chlorine trifluoride. In this case the ER team would wear new =
leather
gloves and use a new nitrile glove as the outer glove
