At around 6pm on Friday evening, emergency services in Ennis responded to a call from a member of the public who reported finding a 30-litre drum in a green area in the Lios ̀?rd estate on the outskirts of the town.

The woman, who had been out walking in the area at the time, noticed the black drum and approached it.

It is understood she got an odour from the drum and called the emergency services believing it to be potentially dangerous.

Units of Clare County Fire and Rescue Service from Ennis station responded along with local Gardà- to what was reported as a 'hazmat' or hazardous materials incident.

On arrival, fire crews quickly cordoned off a large section of the green until the drum could be inspected. It was established that it contained Sodium Hypochlorite also known as bleach and considered a 'dangerous and corrosive' substance.

Construction materials and miscellaneous goods were destroyed in a fire that broke out in a makeshift storehouse at a metro construction site in central Bengaluru on Saturday. There were no casualties, officials said.

The fire at the metro site near Bamboo Bazaar in Shivajinagar is reported to have started around 4 pm.

It erupted in a storehouse where chemical canisters, wood, thermocol sheets, cables, mechanical spare parts, cylinders and other materials were stacked up, according to a senior officer in the fire department.

Roofed with corrugated steel sheets, the storehouse was located at the edge of the metro site. A narrow alley separates its boundary with a row of tightly packed houses in the densely populated neighbourhood.

It was the explosion of three cylinders one after one that set alarm bells ringing in the locality, said Ameerjan, a local resident. Residents of the surrounding residential buildings immediately evacuated, he added.

A HAZMAT situation was declared at a metal manufacturing facility in Burlington Friday after a quick thinking chemist noticed a tumbler containing aluminum powder was rising to concerning temperatures and had the building evacuated, the fire department said.

Firefighters responded to Desktop Metal, 63 Third Ave. at about 10:15 a.m. on the report of a possible HAZMAT situation, Burlington fire said in a statement. The firefighters learned of the chemist's concerns and declared a Tier 1 HAZMAT situation.

They also requested assistance from the state Department of Fire Services HAZMAT team. Those crews are still at the scene and are working to safely remove and dispose of the aluminum powder, the statement said.

The State Police Bomb Squad was also called to the scene as a precaution, the statement said.

The chemist knew that the powder could become an explosion hazard if the temperature rose too high. He pumped Nitrogen into the tumbler containing the powder to stop the temperature from rising higher, the statement said.

The chemist also called 911.

'The chemist did a fantastic job, and I would like to thank him for recognizing the potential danger here, and for quickly taking important steps to mitigate that danger,' Burlington Fire Chief Michael Patterson said in the statement. 'The diligence of the employees at Desktop Metal helped to ensure this incident was not more serious.'

Hall County and Gainesville fire crews responded to a bleach spill Friday morning at Gold Creek chicken plant in Gainesville.

Crews arrived at the plant, located at 2076 Memorial Park Drive, around 11:26 a.m. and found that a large tank filled with bleach was leaking, according to Hall County Fire Services spokeswoman Christie Grice.

'The chemical drained from the tank into an internal contained drain inside the business,' she said. 'The business was evacuated, four people were evaluated on the scene for minor injuries. The business was ventilated and the chemical leak has been contained.'

She said no one was taken to the hospital, and emergency service personnel cleared the scene around 12:20 a.m.

She said a private hazmat response team was enroute to the plant for cleanup.

RESEARCHERS ON PARENTAL LEAVE GET HELP IN THE LAB

Long-term leave, often parental leave, can have a huge impact on scientists' careers. It often coincides with a precarious early career stage, where short-term contracts are the norm and competition for permanent faculty jobs is fierce.
For those taking long-term absences, projects have to be paused, and momentum is lost. Or experiments are left in the care of another scientist, who might change the project's direction or be reluctant to relinquish ownership once the person on leave is back at the bench.

The Babraham Institute in Cambridge, England, has tackled this problem by hiring a dedicated staff member'called a roving researcher'to temporarily manage a project of an early-career biologist or chemist who is on long-term leave, to ensure continuity.
'Taking parental leave has a huge impact on someone on a short-term contract, who needs to keep up the momentum of work so that they can have publications,' explains Melanie Stammers, the scientist who has taken on the roving-researcher role. 'That's how they're going to succeed and get their next job.'

11 YEARS LATER, FATE OF FUKUSHIMA REACTOR CLEANUP UNCERTAIN

OKUMA, Japan (AP) ' Eleven years after the Fukushima Daiichi nuclear power plant was ravaged by a meltdown following a massive earthquake and tsunami, the plant now looks like a sprawling construction site. Most of the radioactive debris blasted by the hydrogen explosions has been cleared and the torn buildings have been fixed.

During a recent visit by journalists from The Associated Press to see firsthand the cleanup of one of the world's worst nuclear meltdowns, helmeted men wore regular work clothes and surgical masks, instead of previously required hazmat coveralls and full-face masks, as they dug near a recently reinforced oceanside seawall.

Workers were preparing for the planned construction of an Olympic pool-sized shaft for use in a highly controversial plan set to begin in the spring of 2023 to gradually get rid of treated radioactive water ' now exceeding 1.3 million tons stored in 1,000 tanks ' so officials can make room for other facilities needed for the plant's decommissioning.

Despite the progress, massive amounts of radioactive melted fuel remain inside of the reactors. There's worry about the fuel because so much about its condition is still unknown, even to officials in charge of the cleanup.

Nearly 900 tons of melted nuclear fuel remain inside the three damaged reactors, and its removal is an unprecedented challenge involving 10 times the amount of damaged fuel removed in the Three Mile Island cleanup following its 1979 partial core melt.

The government has set a decommissioning roadmap aiming for completion in 29 years.
