BRISTOL, Va. ' The city contacted local and state emergency officials Tuesday to inspect an overflow at the city landfill.
Landfill staff noticed water overflowing near the eastern portion of the closed landfill and contacted the city fire department to determine if there was any contamination of soil or water, according to a written statement from the city.
The city's hazardous materials team was activated, as was the Virginia Department of Emergency Management for a cleanup contractor.
'We think it was runoff from all the rain we've had over the past few days, but we wanted to make sure,' City Manager Randy Eads said.
Inspectors continue to review the site, and additional information is expected.
The city continues working with the state Department of Environmental Quality to resolve odor and other issues related to the landfill.

(Des Moines, IA) -- A Des Moines Fire Department is receiving praise from the city for its work dealing with a chemical spill. The city says the Saylor Township fire department's HAZMAT team responded to a chemical spill in a cargo trailer at a shipping facility on NE 2nd Street in early February. The city said on its Facebook page the team did a great job setting up a perimeter, deploying a charged line, and identifying the chemical. The city didn't say what the chemical was.

The source of leaking gasoline in Watseka March 1 has been contained and will not cause any issues for the public, according to local officials.
Emergency personnel were on scene at both the pond south of city hall on Brianna Drive and on Veterans Parkway at the Shell station about the issue.
Watseka Fire Chief Ken Baier said he was called Feb. 28 about the matter. 'There was a slight smell coming from one of the storm sewers at RP Lumber. The workers themselves had contacted the city. Code (inspector Eric Brandt) had gone over there and he called me about it. Nobody else in the area had smelled anything and there was nothing else to be concerned about. So I said OK we'll come by in the morning and check it out. In the meantime I got in contact with the sewer department. They have a few things that we could use if need be to check the sewer and also I wanted to get a hold of the sewer maps to see where everything drains to.
'We started out (March 1) at RP Lumber and immediately we could smell a petroleum based product of some kind in the storm sewer. From there we started working out way south following the storm sewers. We were picking up levels of gas within the storm sewers themselves. We ended up in the north parking lot of the Shell gas station. They have two storm drains there. Once we got to the west storm drain on the north side we were able to actually physically see product going in to the storm sewers. At that point we had duty to act. I made contacts that needed to take place.'

SUNNYSIDE ' Multiple dump truck loads of sand and early-morning efforts from firefighters appear to have finally subdued the large fire at a fertilizer storage facility in Sunnyside, officials said Tuesday afternoon.
One firefighter was injured as crews returned to Nutrien Ag Solutions, 1101 Midvale Road, to battle flare-ups between 5 and 6 a.m. on Tuesday, Sunnyside Fire Chief Ken Anderson said.
'We had a couple of flare-ups overnight, with a fairly noticeable plume of sulfur dioxide (smoke),' Anderson said. Also visible in the darkness were blue flames as sulfur and other chemicals burned.
He noted the main issue Tuesday morning was the sulfur burning in what remains of a storage building on the southeast corner of Nutrien's property in the Port of Sunnyside industrial area.
'We brought in truckloads of sand to cover the sulfur ' that's our main issue,' Anderson said.

At 4.06pm on Monday 28 February, four fire engines attended a commercial building fire on Chain Caul Way, Ashton-on-Ribble.
When crews arrived from Preston, Fulwood, and Penwortham, they found the incident involved chemicals that were well alight.

Firefighters used one hose reel, one jet, and approximately 20 litres of foam to extinguish the fire.
No injuries were reported and crews were in attendance for approximately one and a quarter hours.

FLAT ROCK, MI ' Investigators searching for the source of a chemical leak in the Huron River in Wayne County are focusing on a riverside factory that was originally built by Henry Ford in the 1920s to make automobile headlamps.
On Saturday, Feb. 26, the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) issued a notice of federal interest to Flat Rock Metal Inc., a steel processing factory where pollution investigators say they found evidence that points to the facility as being the potential source of an oily sheen in the river.
A vent pipe for a potential underground fuel storage tank, as well as old fuel oil gauges and oil seeping through basement flooring were found at the facility, according to Sean Kane, an EPA on-scene coordinator leading the agency's response.

ysander, N.Y. ' Four workers at a Lysander pasta sauce plant became ill Monday after they were exposed to chemicals, officials said.
Someone called 911 at 2:12 p.m. after two Giovanni Food Co. employees initially said they were feeling sick after a chemical exposure at the plant on Sixty Road in Lysander.
Belgium Cold Springs Fire Department, the Syracuse Fire Department Hazardous Materials Response Team, Greater Baldwinsville Ambulance Corps (GBAC), Northern Onondaga Volunteer Ambulance (NOVA) and Western Area Volunteer Emergency Services (WAVES) responded to the scene. When they arrived, crews found four workers weren't feeling well. The workers complained of chest pain and headaches, according to police dispatches.
GBAC and NOVA ambulances transported four people to Syracuse hospitals for treatment, said Chris Cullen, GBAC's director of operations. No other information about the patients was immediately available.
Other Giovanni Food workers sat in their vehicles or stood in the parking lot while firefighters investigated the exposure. Firefighters determined someone had inadvertently mixed a 'relatively small amount' of cleaning chemicals, said Tom Taranto, a past chief with Belgium Cold Springs Fire Department.
'They had a container that holds liquids and while rinsing it out, they inadvertently mixed it with chemicals already in the drain,' Taranto said.

DENVER ' Colorado Attorney General Phil Weiser sued 15 companies that manufactured a firefighting foam containing so-called 'forever chemicals' that have been tied to cancer, birth defects and other illnesses the state says have been found in water sources and soil across the state.
The lawsuit seeks to have the companies pay to further investigate, clean up, and monitor contamination at any site where the forever chemicals ' polyfluoroalkyl or perfluoroalkyl substances (PFAS) ' were used, spilled, stored, or disposed of, according to the lawsuit filed Monday in Denver District Court.
'Colorado now has forever chemicals in our soil and drinking water systems and people's health is at risk,' Weiser said in a statement. 'These companies knew that these chemicals posed significant threats to human health and the environment and nonetheless put Colorado at risk; it is important that they pay for the harm they caused.'
Weiser claims the companies sued Monday either knew of, or should have known, how harmful the PFAS, which were used in the aqueous film forming foams (AFFF), were to the environment, animals and humans.

SUNNYSIDE ' Although a chemical fire in Sunnyside quickly consumed an industrial building and emitted sulfur-laden smoke throughout the afternoon and evening, Monday's blaze was caught early enough to avoid injuries and could have been much worse, officials said.
A smoldering pile of sulfur quickly became a raging chemical fire just after 1 p.m. Monday at Nutrien Ag Solutions, 1101 Midvale Road, Sunnyside Fire Chief Ken Anderson said.
The fire destroyed one storage building on the southeast corner of the fertilizer storage facility in the Port of Sunnyside and damaged others, but adjacent Nutrien buildings and storage tanks containing hazardous chemicals were spared, Anderson said Monday evening.
'It was caught early on ' it could have been much worse,' he added.
Nearby industrial facilities in the Port of Sunnyside, including Ostrom Mushroom Farms located immediately south on Midvale, were evacuated, and 18 families living in homes near Interstate 82 also were evacuated as a precaution, Sunnyside Police Chief Al Escalera said.

A chemical factory was gutted in the Santej area of Ahmedabad in a fire that broke out Sunday.
According to Fire Safety department officials, a fire broke out at Resinova Chemical company at Santej intersection in Ahmedabad around 1:20 am. 'After fire was reported, as many as 15 fire tenders were rushed to the spot. Taking into consideration the heat intensity, a fire robot was first sent inside the factory premises by the firefighters. The fire was doused by morning hours and no casualty or injury has been reported,' said a Fire Safety Department official.

RAGPICKER KILLED IN EXPLOSION IN GARBAGE BIN IN HYDERABAD

A woman ragpicker was killed in an explosion at a garbage bin in the Anandnagar area near Mailardevpally, Hyderabad on Sunday morning, police said.
The deceased was identified as R Susheelamma (40), a resident of Telangana's Mahabubnagar district, who earned her livelihood by collecting plastic waste from the garbage, police added.
'Her husband Rangamuni, who was also involved in picking up plastic waste, was lucky to escape from the mishap as he was a few metres away from the accident spot,' Mylardevpally inspector of police K Narasimha told HT.
According to police, the incident happened at around 9 am, when Sushelamma was segregating the trash in the garbage bin to collect plastic waste.
'A plastic tin containing unknown chemical exploded, causing serious injuries to her. Her left hand was severed due to the blast, and she died on the spot,' Narasimha said.
The loud explosion triggered panic among the locals, who ran away from the spot, fearing it was a bomb explosion, police said.
