I have had to sample hundreds of hoods over the years as part of site wide asbestos surveys and what you say is true. However, most (most not all!) times if you look at the bottom or top of a panel you can shave off a small sample for testing with a sharp blade (that gets ruined doing it). No easy but something that worked well for me.

I haven't done asbestos sampling for a long time, but I always found sampling transite-like material to see if it is asbestos containing is a real bear. If you can't find a small, broken piece or chip, it becomes a hammer and chisel job, or, worse, wet power cutting of some sort (specialty equipment required).

No. You need a licensed contractor for that. And if you have the old transite (asbestos containing) hoods just leave them alone. If you are not sure you have to get them tested for asbestos.

I've heard that some old hood lining materials contain asbestos. Do they handle that?

I had several fume hoods refurbished by LF Systems Corp. You may want to talk to this group.

Does anyone know a company that replaces fume hood liners? I have a client that says their hoods work well but have taken a beating on the inside over the years. They checked with their hood supplier with no luck finding anyone. I honestly don't even know if this is a "thing" but thought this group might know.
