The Dayton Bomb Squad carried out a controlled detonation of 'hazardous materials' in Washington Township after a local family reported the materials on their property.
According to a release, the family reported the materials to the Washington Township Fire Department, who contacted the bomb squad.
In a call to the Montgomery County Dispatch, the caller said that a chemical removal company was taking chemicals from a house on Marylhurst Drive when they came upon bottle of dry titric acid.
The company told the family that the titric acid is highly flammable and refused to take it, the caller said.
The bomb squad took the acid to Washington Twp. Fire Station 43, 10499 Dayton-Lebanon Pike, where they detonated it with the assistance of the fire department, the release said.

Chemical waste illegally dumped near a printing mill in India created a toxic gas inhaled by nearby workers on Thursday, killing six people and hospitalizing over 20.
Officials said the incident occurred at approximately four in the morning within Surat, a large city in India's Gujarat state that is known for its commercial textile production.
'Chemicals were being illegally discharged from a tanker into a rivulet close to the mill, which possibly reacted with another chemical in the water and created toxic gas,' Basant Pareek, Surat Municipal Corporation's chief fire officer, explained to Reuters.
'The workers inhaled the gas and started feeling suffocation. When we reached the scene, the workers were found collapsed on the road in their attempt to escape.'
Pareek said 23 people were hospitalized after being exposed to the toxic gas, seven of whom are in critical condition and on ventilators.

DECATUR, Ala. (AP) ' A chemical manufacturing company faces more than $230,000 in fines after a federal investigation found exposure to toxic chemicals led to the deaths of two employees and sickened another last summer.
Daikin America exposed three chemical operators to fluorocarbon and other hazardous chemicals that led to respiratory failure for the workers at its Decatur facility on July 2, 2021, the U.S. Department of Labor said Wednesday.

FALMOUTH, MA ' Falmouth Hospital closed its emergency room and is sending ambulances to other, nearby hospitals after a hazardous materials incident Thursday afternoon.
Hospital officials said a patient in possession of fentanyl came to the emergency room. Several hospital employees were exposed and are being treated, officials said.
Falmouth fire, police and the Massachusetts Department of Fire Services Hazardous Materials arrived on scene and closed the emergency room to make sure the rest of it was hazard free.

MARCY, N.Y. (UPDATE) ' A hazmat team was called to Old River Road in Marcy Thursday morning after a propane delivery truck and another car collided.

The crash happened around 9:15 a.m. in the vicinity of the Walmart Distribution Center.
According to Oneida County Sheriff's Office, 22-year-old Deionnie Rose was driving a black Mitsubishi Outlander west on Old River Road and collided with an oncoming Suburban Propane truck while trying to turn and failing to yield the right of way.
The truck overturned during the collision, leaking propane on the road. The hazmat team arrived about 20 minutes after the crash.

SMITH COUNTY, Texas ' Smith County authorities and HAZMAT teams are responding to a reported chemical spill that has a smell of natural gas.
According to Smith County Fire Marshal Jay Brooks, about a gallon of an unidentified chemical spilled off the back of a pickup truck in the area of Farm-to-Market Road 346 and and Farm-to-Market Road756 (Paulxy Dr.).
HAZMAT crews are headed to the scene to inspect the spill and get it resolved.
Evacuations are not necessary at this time, but officials say if residents near the spill site feel ill from the smell, they can leave the area.

A bird-lover from near Plymouth has been named as the first person in the UK to catch a new strain of bird flu.
Alan Gosling, 79, looked on helplessly as a team in hazmat suits killed all 20 of his beloved ducks on New Year's Day after they fell ill.
After DEFRA (Department for Environment, Food and Rural Affairs) and APHA (Animal and Plant Health Agency) heard about Alan's poorly ducks, 160 local ducks tested positive for the H5N1 strain of avian flu.

The retired railway worker and duck expert from Buckfastleigh was told to take a test for avian flu and a number of other illnesses.
He was told to take a test for avian flu and a number of other illnesses and the swabs have so far confirmed that he has the general flu virus and the H5N1 strain of avian flu - a first in the UK.
He tested negative for three other strains of avian flu, and not all of his results are back.

This essay assessed the chemical safety knowledge of students in the School of Chemistry and Chemical Engineering, Tianjin University of Technology, concerning chemical storage, heat operation, waste disposal, and emergency response. The results show that students' familiarity and understanding of safety knowledge is not satisfactory, especially in the waste disposal and emergency response. In addition, the significant difference is also found among different subgroups (gender, major, and academic year). Therefore, in the following work, the analytical experimental courses incorporate online and offline safety education into the teaching design for first-year undergraduates. Prudent and continuous safety training is expected to be routinely provided for all undergraduates and postgraduates in the future.

FOUR DEAD IN BOILER EXPLOSION AT INDIAN CHEMICAL PLANT

Four people, including a four-year-old girl and her mother, were killed when a boiler exploded at a manufacturing plant run by Canton Laboratories in Gujarat, India, on 24 December. 11 others were injured, including another child, according to local news reports.
The cause of the boiler explosion is being investigated. The blast destroyed temporary units that the company had put up a few metres away from the boiler complex. While listed as storage in plans, it transpires that employees and their families were living there, in violation of local regulations. The mother and daughter were inside when the units collapsed. The other two victims were operators in the boiler room.
On 25 December, two directors of Canton Laboratories were arrested and charged with culpable homicide not amounting to murder. The company makes fine and speciality chemicals, supplying a range of industries from pharmaceuticals to electronics and photography.
This is the third deadly incident at chemicals facilities in Gujarat in December 2021, after one person was killed at RP industries on 7 December, and five died in an explosion at Gujarat Fluorochemicals on 16 December.

Nanotechnology underpins many emerging industries and technological innovations, such as artificial intelligence, quantum information science, and advanced manufacturing. Nanotechnology is a collection of sciences that encompasses chemistry, biology, physics, engineering, and advanced computing technology to create or manipulate materials or processes at the nanoscale. The nanoscale is the range from 1 to 100 nanometers. A nanometer is one-billionth of a meter. For reference, a sheet of paper is about 100,000 nanometers thick. Nanoscale matter can behave differently from the same material in a larger bulk form. For example, a material's melting point, color, strength, chemical reactivity, and more may change at the nanoscale.1
The small size and the corresponding large ratio of surface area to mass lead to a predicted greater biological activity per given mass for nanomaterials, relative to their bulk counterparts.2 Therefore, the properties and behavior of nanoscale forms of a compound cannot simply be extrapolated from those of their larger bulk forms.3 The nanostructure-dependent physical and chemical properties of many engineered nanoparticles may place them in the category of potential hazards. The direct risk that nanoparticles present to human health and to the environment will depend on the physicochemical characteristics of the surface and core of nanoparticles, on the probability of exposure occurring during each stage of their life cycle, and on the extent to which particulate materials exhibit interactions with biological systems associated with their nanostructure.

In 2020, a foam fire suppression system went off in a Delta Air Lines aircraft hangar at Los Angeles International Airport. Within minutes, the cavernous space was packed from floor to ceiling with thick white foam. When employees opened the hangar bay door, foam poured out onto the nearby tarmac.

In a tweet, one aviation blogger called it 'a very big and expensive mess.' A Delta spokesperson told the aviation news website simpleflying.com that an unspecified fire suppression system malfunction caused the discharge of foam.
According to a 2021 study published by researchers at the University of Maryland, about a dozen incidents like this occur in the United States each year'and that figure is slowly increasing. On average, each incident results in about $100,000 of property damage, the study found.
But changes to the 2022 edition of NFPA 409, Standard on Aircraft Hangars, released in the fall, allow for alternative methods of hangar fire protection and may help limit those losses. 'In the past, for large hangars, foam was the only fire protection method prescribed by NFPA 409,' said Matthew Daelhousen, an operations chief engineer at FM Global and chair of the NFPA 409 technical committee. 'Now there are other options available.'

HOUSTON, Texas (KTRK) -- An 18-wheeler fuel tanker rolled over at a railyard early Wednesday morning in Spring.
Harris County Constable Precinct 4 said in a tweet at 3 a.m. that deputies were on the scene at Lloyd Railyard in the 25000 block of Aldine Westfield Road.
Two to three-thousand gallons of fuel is believed to have spilled from the crash.

A Laboratory scientist attached to government hospital Abraka, Ethiope East Local Council of Delta State, Mrs. Ame Onyelo has died of wounds sustained during a cooking gas explosion.
The Guardian learnt that she sustained 90 percent degree burns after her cooking gas exploded on New Year day, while she was cooking.
It was gathered that she died on Tuesday at University of Benin Teaching Hospital (UBTH) Benin City, where she was rushed to for medication.
Mrs. Onyelo was in a state of 50-50 before being rushed to the Government Hospital, Abraka and then the Central Hospital, Warri and thereafter to UBTH, where she died on Tuesday at about 1:30p.m.

Fire Chief Kalamadeen Edoo says that the Guyana Fire Service remains 'optimistic' that the fire which ripped through a laboratory at the Georgetown Public Hospital was intentionally set but he noted that investigators are awaiting further lab results.
During a telephone interview with the News Room on Wednesday, the Fire Chief said that the oil-like substance found at the scene on Saturday was sent to the Guyana Forensic Science Laboratory for identification.
Once that substance is positively identified, Edoo said that the fire service will 'move to the next level.'

BOULDER COUNTY, Colo. ' Residents returning to homes burned in the Marshall Fire should not sift through the ash and debris, which might contain toxic substances.
Boulder County Public Health (BCPH) issued that warning on Wednesday in regards to some organizations offering sifters designed to help homeowners recover belongings in the debris.
Ash contains small amounts of cancer-causing chemicals, and ash and debris from burned structures might contain toxic substances from synthetic and other materials, BCPH said.
"BCPH strongly recommends that residents do not attempt to remove debris or clean up properties that have been damaged or destroyed and under no circumstances should residents disturb ash regardless of what personal protective equipment (PPE) they may have," BCPH says in a news release.

Surat: At least six people were killed and 22 others were hospitalized after they inhaled toxic fumes leaking from a chemical tanker parked near a factory in Gujarat's Surat district in the wee hours of Thursday, officials said. The incident reportedly happened in the Vishwaprem Dyeing And Printing Mill and the deceased are said to be factory workers of the mill who suffocated to death due to the poisonous gas leak. The people who fell unconscious after inhaling the poisonous gas were immediately rushed to the Surat Civil Hospital for treatment.
The factory workers were in the dyeing factory, located in Sachin industrial area when the incident took place, Surat Municipal Corporation's (SMC) in-charge chief fire officer Basant Pareek said.
Hospital's Superintendent in charge, Dr Omkar Chaudhary said, 'Six people died and 22 others were admitted to the civil hospital after gas leakage at a company in Sachin GIDC area of Surat early morning today.'
The fire department received a call around 4.25 am, he said, adding that 25 to 26 workers fell unconscious after inhaling the toxic fumes coming out of the chemical tanker parked on a roadside near the factory and were rushed to the new civil hospital. The fire department later managed to close the tanker's valve to stop the leakage, Pareek said.

new state law in New York bans the sale of televisions and other electronic displays that contain any intentionally added organohalogen flame retardant in their plastic enclosures or stands.
Scientific studies link exposure to organohalogen flame retardants to cancer, hormone disruption, and reproductive problems as well as to neurological injury in children.
New York's law is the first in the US that in effect bans organohalogens from use in the cases of electronic consumer goods, health and environmental advocacy groups say. The law takes effect Jan. 1, 2024. The state follows the lead of the European Union, which banned the sale of televisions and computers with plastic cases containing organohalogen flame retardants as of March 2021.
Dozens of organohalogen flame retardants are used in a wide variety of consumer goods They are often added to plastics and are not chemically bound within a polymer structure. The substances can migrate out of products and into dust, leading people to be exposed through breathing or via their skin. The US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention has found metabolites of these compounds in the blood of most people in the US.

A Benton County laboratory worker has filed a lawsuit against a prominent Corvallis lab that specializes in COVID-19 testing, claiming he was fired shortly after blowing the whistle on safety concerns.
The company, Willamette Valley Toxicology, has not yet responded to the suit in Benton County Circuit Court. However, it claimed in a response to the Bureau of Labor and Industries that it did not fire him to retaliate; rather, it claimed that his coworkers had raised concerns about an alleged 'inability to work well with others.'
According to the company's website, the company is affiliated with Oregon State University and has ' grown into one of the highest throughput Covid testing labs in the Pacific Northwest.' The suit, filed on Dec. 28, states that Andrew Williams began working for the company on Dec. 22, 2020 as a full-time, $18-an-hour medical technician for COVID-19 testing. He soon began compiling a list of safety concerns, according to the suit.
Among his concerns, according to the suit:
Insufficient cleaning of the lab filtration hood, which could contain COVID particles
Lab workers wearing lab coats and gloves outside of the lab area
'Unsafe' lab attire of shorts and sandals worn by the company's CEO, Manny Cruz
Cruz allegedly 'recklessly' handled sample vials with his bare hands and then touched his face
Packages containing COVID-19 sample vials were being opened outside of a biosafety hood
Waste from the biosafety hoods disposed of in recycling without being sterilized, endangering people who would often rummage through the company's recycling

Benson got her start in safety in the energy sector at oilfield services company Tesco Corporation (since acquired by oil and gas drilling contractor Nabors Industries) where she eventually became HSE Manager. Based in Calgary, Benson founded Thrive Safety Consulting in 2019. The organization offers health and safety consulting services including training and safety program development.
Thrive is also a Certified Auditor with Energy Safety Canada.

Safe behaviours start at home, says Ryan Sloan, Health and Safety Manager, Birchcliff Energy.
'Being a good example is key both at work and at home. I feel if you can't have that culture within you when you're at home, you can't bring that to work either,' he says.
Health and safety leaders in the energy sector need to be a positive influence, and have excellent communication skills which are 'critical to send out that message and represent what you're trying to communicate,' says Sloan.

WILLIAMSPORT ' Nitric acid leaked from a truck trailer at the FedEx Freight terminal Monday evening, but a hazmat team contained the spill and no one was hurt, authorities said.
"It was very fortunate it wasn't worse," said Williamsport Volunteer Fire and EMS Assistant Chief William Ball. "We were able to mitigate it and get back home to our families in about three hours."
Employees of the facility at 16114 Transportation Circle discovered the leak around 6:30 p.m. when they investigated a noise that turned out to be tires bursting after the acid ate through the wood-and-metal floor of the trailer and got onto the wheels, Ball said.
The workers called 911 and first responders arrived to find a 275-gallon tote, a plastic tank surrounded by a metal frame, had leaked about a fourth of its contents inside the trailer, he said.

OCFA firefighters responded to a hazardous materials incident as a result of a two-car traffic collision at Grand and Fourth in Santa Ana just past 9 p.m. tonight.
One vehicle carrying acid and chlorine had the load spill which prompted the response.

Skin is a potential route for occupational exposure to chemical agents, which can result in serious injury or illness. The selection of gloves and other chemical protective clothing (CPC) to protect against exposure to hazardous chemicals begins with an informed risk assessment and management approach, which relies on the science and art of glove selection. The science of glove selection includes a fundamental understanding of the limitations of gloves and other CPC, job hazard analyses to identify the hazards posed by specific tasks, choosing from a hierarchy of controls, familiarity with the relevant resources to guide selection, and, in some cases, additional glove performance testing and/or consultation with a qualified occupational and environmental safety and health professional. The art of glove selection includes important considerations, such as ease of use, comfort, cost, and acceptance by workers. Finally, a well-managed personal protective equipment (PPE) program!
