KNOXVILLE, Tenn. (WATE) ‰?? All lanes of southbound I-81 in Greene County have reopened after being closed for several hours due to a tractor-trailer truck carrying thousands of pounds of batteries overturned Thursday morning.
The left lane Southbound I-81 at mile marker 19 in Greene County was blocked due to the crash. A Tennessee Department of Transportation spokesperson said a HAZMAT company was called to assist with the cleanup of the truck‰??s cargo, 43,000 pounds of wet cell batteries.
The right lane of I-81 S remained open. Crews worked to clear the scene for several hours and rerouted some drivers off the southbound interstate at Exit 23 to 11-E through Bulls Gap.
According to a report from the Tennessee Highway Patrol, the truck was traveling south on I-81 at 5 a.m. when it ran off the road and traveled up an embankment. The vehicle then turned back counterclockwise as it attempted to re-enter the roadway.

HAZMAT CLEANUP UPDATE IN NEDERLAND

City of Nederland emergency response crews are still monitoring a transport trailer that leaked its contents resulting in a HAZMAT cleanup operation and an awful odor that affected a wide area in Southeast Texas, with residents from adjacent cities complaining that they too could smell the spill.
On Dec. 12, the city of Nederland issued a press release warning citizens that Beauxart Garden Road was closed due to hazardous material leaking from a transport trailer located at Nederland Tank Wash. On Dec. 15, Nederland Tank Wash stated that the leak had been detected Dec. 11 at about 5 p.m. by staff who heard a hissing noise coming from the trailer.
The product leaking from the trailer has been identified as Lubrizol 1389, a mineral oil blend that was producing low levels of hydrogen sulfide gas, according to the city. City Manager Chris Duque told The Examiner last week that the tank wash facility had hired air monitoring firm Center for Toxicology & Environmental Health (CTEH), and Pulido Transport, the owner of the trailer, had since taken leadership of the cleanup operation.
CTEH, which is also reportedly still in the city performing tests, has stated in subsequent news releases following the leak that the community is safe from the potentially lethal gas, in spite of the noxious pervading odor nearby residents say still remains. According to CTEH, monitoring performed on Dec. 12-13 did not detect sulfur-based compounds in the community and although residents could smell the rotten egg stench associated with those chemical compounds, ‰??These low concentrations do not represent a public health risk to the community.‰??

A firefighter has been taken to hospital after a large industrial fire broke out in Yangebup, sparking a hazmat smoke warning across several southern suburbs.
The firefighter suffered non-life threatening injuries while battling the blaze, which ignited at a fibre glass factory on Dobra Road about 7.30pm on Wednesday night.
It is believed a chemical reaction inside the factory sparked the fire, which forced police to close nearby streets.
A hazmat smoke warning was issued for parts of Spearwood and Bibra Lake.
‰??A structure fire in an industrial area is resulting in a potentially dangerous smoke blowing in a northerly direction,‰?? the Department of Fire and Emergency Services warning said.
Nearby residents reported hearing several ‰??explosions‰?? during the blaze.
A train travelling on a freight line behind the Dobra Road factory forced fire fighters to abandon part of their efforts to suppress the fire at one stage.

BEAUMONT, Texas ‰?? With three chemical leaks in less than three weeks, people are asking how to stay informed and what can they do to protect themselves.
First, it was the Saturday, Dec. 11 hydrogen sulfide from a tanker at a Nederland business.
Then on Wednesday, Dec. 15, a benzene leak from a Port Arthur plant triggered a brief shelter in place. And Tuesday night, a pipeline leak in the area of LaBelle Road lead to a shelter-in-place order that lasted for nearly 24 hours.
Some people are concerned about how they can protect themselves when they were never alerted of the leak.
"I have children, and I have to consider the well-being of me, myself, and my kids," said Beaumont resident Joanna Freeman.
Freeman said she smelled gas in the air, but she never received an alert about a pipeline leak.
"There would have to be a formal warning. So we would know, because, you know, seeing it on Facebook, it's not acceptable," said Port Neches resident Vickie Smith.
"The residents of this area that have experienced chemical explosions, the TPC explosion, and now we've got gas leaks. I just feel like there's no one that has our backs," Smith said.
Fire Chief of ESD No. 4 Jeremy Hansen said the primary system of alerting residents in case of emergency is the Southeast Texas Alerting Network or STAN.
"It primarily exists here for the petrochemical hazards that exist and the chemical hazards that exist in this region,‰?? Hansen said.
But registering for STAN isn't a one-and-done deal.
"Even if you've been registered in the past, it's important that you update your registration annually and make sure that you're subscribed to receive the top alerts on your cell phone and/or home phone," Hansen said.

The deaths of two people following a laboratory explosion at a Chinese university in October have raised alarm among researchers. The full circumstances that led to the deaths at the Nanjing University of Aeronautics and Astronautics (NUAA), in Jiangsu province, are not yet known ‰?? but they come amid wider concerns about safety in university teaching labs in China.
The deaths are the latest in a series of fatalities caused by explosions in academic laboratories in China, often involving students in chemistry departments, that have been reported in recent years. Some researchers are optimistic that the situation is improving. But others say China‰??s government needs to do more to improve safety.
Be mindful of your safety in the lab
In the recent incident, nine people were injured and two died as a result of an explosion just before 4 p.m. in the NUAA‰??s College of Materials Science and Technology, according to a 24 October post by the university on the social-media network Weibo. The NUAA said this week that an investigation was ongoing, but declined to answer Nature‰??s questions regarding the safety of its laboratories.
Earlier this year, on 31 March, a graduate student was killed following an explosion at the Institute of Chemistry of the Chinese Academy of Sciences in Beijing. Previous lab blasts led to deaths of three students conducting a sewage-treatment experiment at Beijing Jiaotong University in December 2018; one death in the chemistry department at Tsinghua University in Beijing in December 2015; and one death in a chemistry lab at the China University of Mining and Technology in Xuzhou in April 2015.
