ALHAMBRA (CNS) ‰?? An estimated several hundred gallons of gasoline spilled Sunday into the Alhambra Wash and was moving south toward San Marino.
Los Angeles County Hazmat and Los Angeles County Flood Control crews were at the scene as of around 8 p.m. Sunday, South Pasadena police said.
Pasadena and Los Angeles County Hazmat units arrived at the scene to handle the cleanup, she said. L.A. County Public Works crews will handle flood maintenance outside the city limits, according to the South Pasadena police.
Alhambra police said the spill left a lingering gas smell, which was expected to dissipate sometime late Sunday night or early Monday morning.

About 1,300 gallons of gasoline spilled into a storm drain from Pasadena Sunday afternoon, authorities said.
At around 3:15 p.m., a vehicle struck a gas pump at the 76 gas station on E. Glenarm Street and S. Arroyo Parkway in Pasadena, officials said.
The gasoline spilled into the Alhambra wash and traveled towards San Marino.
As a result of the spill, the smell of gasoline is coming from the west side of San Marino.

Remnants of industrial chemicals in the air can potentially transform into new substances more toxic and persistent than the original pollution, according to a global study published this week.
Using samples gathered around the world, the study published in Nature found that these previously unidentified products are present in the atmospheres of 18 big cities including Lagos, New York, Tokyo and Warsaw.
Regulatory guidelines like those listed in the Stockholm Convention assess the danger of different chemical pollutants based on how long they remain in the environment, how toxic they are and to what degree they contaminate living things.
But, the study notes, this approach has been limited to a list of known substances and does not take into account how they may change as they break down.
The research proposes a new framework using laboratory tests and computer simulation to predict what chemicals will arise as products interact with the air and how toxic they will be.
Study main author John Liggio, a research scientist for Environment Canada, worked with a team to test the framework on nine flame-retardant chemicals most commonly found in the atmosphere.

MUMBAI: A suspected chemical powder from a refinery fell on the food and vehicles of residents of Mahul village in Mumbai, triggering panic in the area, officials said on Sunday.
The incident took place around 11pm on Saturday, when residents of Gawan Pada at Mahul village in suburban Chembur were celebrating a festival outside their homes, a fire official said.
They noticed some powder from the Hindustan Petroleum's refinery located nearby falling on their food and vehicles, the official said.
The worried residents immediately alerted the local police and the fire department.
Personnel of the fire department, police and the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation reached the spot and immediately contacted officials of the refinery, the official said.
The plant officials were asked to close the work there, he said.
The personnel from the fire department, police and the civic body were present in the area till 1.30 am on Sunday and did not find anything suspicious, the fire official said, adding that the suspected chemical substance stopped falling automatically after some time.

In 1921 the US automobile industry was struggling with an awkward technical problem. An internal combustion engine works best when the fuel‰??air mixture explodes at the optimum point in its power cycle. But premature ignition ‰?? indicated by a distinctive noise known as ‰??knocking‰?? ‰?? reduces efficiency and damages engines. In December of that year, Thomas Midgley announced his discovery of an effective remedy for it. Midgley showed that adding traces of lead to commercial gasoline prevented knocking.
Lead‰??s toxicity had long been known ‰?? the Greek physician Dioscorides (c. 40‰??90 CE) mentioned its harmful effects in his widely-read De Materia Medica, and numerous subsequent authors observed tremors, convulsions, and madness afflicting workers in lead-based industries. Nevertheless, Midgley and his backers insisted that leaded gasoline posed no risk to public health. Decades passed before the full consequences of this error became apparent. Today, persistent lead residues remain its enduring legacy.

On Friday, Huntsville Fire and Rescue‰??s Hazardous Materials Team responded to single-vehicle crash involving an overturned pickup truck carrying a 50 gallon tank of diesel fuel.
The accident happened in the 1600 block of Dug Hill Rd in the Central community.
Once the truck was removed from the creek, Huntsville Fire and Rescue‰??s Hazardous Materials Team deployed booms and absorbent material to collect the spilled fuel from the water.
Central VFD, ALEA, Madison County Sheriff Office, Huntsville-Madison County Rescue Squad and HEMSI assisted with that incident.
No injuries were reported in either incident.

Around 4 o'clock on a Friday afternoon in April 2018, first responders arrived at the scene of an accident between a pickup and a tractor-trailer rig on U.S. 70 in St. Francis County.
The pickup had crossed the centerline, forcing the truck to swerve. The truck, which was carrying about 20,000 pounds of cargo, then rolled over and burst into flames. The pickup driver did not survive.
The responding law enforcement officers, firefighters and employees of a local towing company were concerned about the fire and what the truck was carrying, but they saw no signage indicating any hazardous materials, and the truck driver told first responders that he wasn't aware of any such materials on board.
A jury awarded six of those first responders $75 million Wednesday in St. Francis County Circuit Court after their attorneys showed that Old Dominion Freight Line Inc., the North Carolina-based company that owned the truck, failed to immediately inform the responders that the rig was carrying formic acid, a combustible liquid used for dyeing textiles, paper and making other chemicals.
Those who arrived unwittingly inhaled poisonous smoke for hours.
Plaintiffs and attorneys said they hope the case will raise awareness about the importance of protecting first responders who are the first line of defense in such situations and must be informed immediately of any type of chemical that could permanently damage their health or cause possibly fatal diseases, like cancer.

Hyderabad: Two persons suffered minor injuries in an explosion of a chemical container at a scrap warehouse at Subhash Nagar in Jeedimetla on the city outskirts here on Saturday.
Sources said the incident occurred in the evening, when the victims were allegedly trying to forcibly open an old chemical container. Due to the impact, the temporary roof of the warehouse shed damaged and fell on them.
The injured were immediately shifted to a nearby private hospital for treatment.The Jeedimetla police are investigating.

AURORA, Colo. ‰?? About 30 people were displaced late Thursday after firefighters detected high levels of carbon monoxide at an Aurora apartment complex.
Just after 11 p.m. Thursday, Aurora Fire Rescue responded to a medical call at an apartment complex along the 1600 block of N. Hanover Street. While paramedics assessed people, the fire department checked for carbon monoxide levels and found that they were elevated. The people who appeared sickly had symptoms of breathing in carbon monoxide.
Three ambulances, a battalion and a hazmat vehicle were called to the scene after carbon monoxide was detected.
Fire crews evacuated the rest of the building. They then found readings over 1900 parts per million. According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, one-hour exposure to 1,000 to 1,200 ppm would "cause unpleasant but no dangerous symptoms, but that 1,500 to 2,000 ppm might be a dangerous concentration after 1 hour."

SANTA MARIA FRUIT PROCESSING COMPANY SETTLES HAZARDOUS MATERIALS CASE

District Attorney Joyce E. Dudley announced [this week] that the Consumer and Environmental Protection Unit of the Santa Barbara County District Attorney‰??s Office has reached a settlement with the Santa Maria-based fruit processing company, Titan Frozen Fruit, LLC (‰??Titan‰??), related to claims that the company failed to properly implement a Hazardous Materials Business Plan.
The case stemmed from an August, 2020 incident at the company‰??s facility, wherein two cleaning agents containing hazardous materials mixed, causing the release of chlorine gas within the facility. Santa Maria City Fire responded to the incident, and at least 5 employees were treated for symptoms related to their exposure to the gas.
When inspectors with Santa Barbara County‰??s Certified Unified Program Agency (‰??CUPA‰??) investigated the incident, they learned that the company‰??s Hazardous Materials Business Plan (‰??HMBP‰??) failed to account for the possibility of the chemicals coming into contact with one another during cleaning operations. As a result, the HMBP had no procedures in place to ensure cleaning did not occur simultaneously, nor did it account for how the chemicals should be stored to prevent them from mixing. Titan fully cooperated with CUPA‰??s investigation and the violations were quickly remedied.

Winnipeg Fire Paramedic Service responded to a chemical spill involving a flammable chemical in laboratory in a Main Street building on Friday afternoon, December 17, 2021.
WFPS crews responded to a chemical spill in an office tower on Main Street on December 17, 2021.
When members of the HazMat team arrived on the scene they evacuated the high-rise office tower and were able to quickly contain the spill. The chemical was collected and will be safely disposed of.
Crews were on site for about two hours and the building was deemed safe to re-enter after the clean-up was completed.
One person working in the laboratory was exposed to the chemical when the spill happened and was taken to hospital in stable condition. No other injuries were reported.
